In this case he needed to panic kick it 40-50m forward rather than get caught in trouble and handball directly to the oppo in the centre of the ground. Better to tune the ball over inside our 50 (although hopefully someone is there to provide a contest) than turn it over in the middle of the ground and give it straight too them. Not the best example

I reckon Sholl does the right thing and bangs it forward

For a 2nd game player he did well. I would sooner him look for a better option and turn the ball over rather than get in a bad habit of bombing the ball forward where it’s still a good chance of being turned over.

* I love this bloke. Could be magic off a wing for us. 6’3” wingman
Actually did a post mentioning potential wings and knew I’d forgotten him

Be very happy with Chayce on one and Nank on the other

Prefer Soligo half forward / inside mid

Dowling is also a potential wing in medium term and maybe inside mid long term

Think we are flushed for options as Hinge and Curtin could also do well on the wings

Don’t think poor Lachie Sholl will get too many opportunities , Sloane shouldn’t either !

Imagine playing Sloane over Nank on the wing.

Wrong thread but Nank is a classic example of Nicks stuffing up selection. Nank should have played against Essendon. Only gets a late call up against Melbourne, performs and holds his spot for a few weeks. Without that injury we could have gone the full year without knowing what Nank had.

Nank should play lots of wing hopefully , was impressed with him and would pick him any day over sloane out there next year on the wing

Still think Nank might be a sneaky chance as a potential mid

Has that evasiveness and game sense that is hard to teach, won't ever be a bustling clearance type but his smarts could end up very useful in the middle

Otherwise yeah, you'd hope wing is his future

Go Nank got him in my starting 18 round 1

Absolutely, can't agree more.

I think we are overly conservative, which on one hand gives players confidence that one bad game and they won't be out of the team - which makes them better players - but on the other hand best 22 comes from talent and form - which has to be rewarded.

The other was waiting on Worrell a couple of weeks too long after he recovered from his pre-season injury - but understand we couldn't drop Doedee - guess what they both made best 22.

We're flush for potential options, we now need a couple of players to take the opportunity as right now it is probably a weak point. There are still a lot of question marks for me.
  • Can Jones back up a good 2023?
  • Dawson, Soligo and Schoenberg have played well but and much more suited to inside mid roles.
  • Can Nankervis transition into a wingman and how well will he perform?
  • Can Sholl, McHenry Edwards or Dowling improve enough?
  • Milera, Hinge and Smith could be options but would need someone to come in a play half back (Ryan and Bond the most likely options and there are question marks on them).
  • Cook - who knows where he will play or how good he will be at it. It looks like forward is the plan for now.
  • Curtin is most likely a key defender short and long term.
  • Sloane and Smith probably should be last case scenarios.

I'm not too worried about Jones at this point, feels like he's turned the corner completely to where he was 18 months ago. He also has a hardness and physicality to his game that will see him succeed. It's probably one of the primary difference between him and a guy like Lachie Sholl, who while I think improved his intent to be physical, just doesn't seem to have the same strength to do what Jones does. Looking at their physical stats they're almost identical players, but chalk and cheese when it comes to their physical actions on the field.

I'm very sorry to hear of your recent death
Oops, I guess that's not me then...

(I just did a Wiki Search on Dan* Gar*. I was curious to see if anyone would notice that dude was 15 years dead.)

(I'm also rather bored at the moment...)

(The username Dangar was already taken when I signed up, so I tacked a 'man' on the end)

Hope he can keep his spot in the 22, very much liked what I saw from him in the back end of this year.
You would hope so!

He's one of many half back flanker & wingmen types we can rotate through with Hinge, Milera, Jones & Smith... & hopefully Edwards too at time.

I think Ryan would be that guy. Not Edwards .
No, imo Edwards will come in 1st as a half back / wingman for some games next year.

Ryan more likely to be the long term HBF, but implo not as likely to play AFL next season.

Don’t think I’d call either Edwards or Ryan ready-made for AFL games next year, in any position

But I’ve been surprised before

Michalanney played from round 1.

Rachele & Soligo played from round 1.

Curtin I suspect will play round 1.

I don't think Edwards will play round 1, but imo likely to play during next season.

Especially if he comes out the gates strong in the SANFL. Same with Dowling as I think they have both moonlighted as forwards in the past
