Macca's Remarkable Year 2012

We've dodged bullets by being able to have 2 strong drafts in the 2 seriously compromised drafts. We landed wallis and libba in the gold coast draft, and smith, talia, Pearce, Dickson, campbell and jj in the gws draft. Thats really good going. Add another 2 high picks this year, another likely high pick next year, and throw in a free agent with our mega cap space in the next 2 years, and we're ok

We should probably make this post a sticky for the next couple of years so we can all be reminded that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Our second and 2 third rounders this year will be the equivalent of first and second round picks last year. Three kids of the quality of a Clay Smith and a Talia to go with our 2 elite first round kids. Five very good quality kids to come into the side next season will go a long way to helping us achieve success in the next few years.

Can't stress enough how lucky we are that dal, wallis, libba, smith, pearce, talia, jj, dickson, Roberts, campbell were all picked up during the 2 most diluted drafts of all time. That is what's saved us from despair.

We have more picks to come, this year and next year again no doubt. We also have some key planks in the big man department (roughie, Cordy, jones) that have already done a couple of years of a long "big man apprenticeship". They'll hit their primes around the same time the young midfield/defenders do.

And we will have a heap of cap room people. A heap. Hopefully a top liner can see this team as a nice mix of a team with cap space that can also compete for a flag in 2 years time.

Next year will be ugly, but a lot of fun at the same time.

Hey guys!

Just thought I'd tell you what's on my mind at the moment.....

Since he's no good to us in the back line, should Macca play Lukas Markovic up forward?
May not work out, but it wouldn't hurt to try!

Why not he was originally a forward I believe.
Besides every other key back has played forward this year.

I want to believe that all is on track. I hear a lot of rhetoric but no facts.

I worry that we have too many average players, Austin, Marko, Howard, Hooper, Addison , DJ etc that cannot take us to the ultimate success. They give their all but that is not enough. I hope that the kids we have started to develop can take big steps. Maybe I am getting old, but I don't see it. We have no run and carry, we don't break lines and our outside mids are very limited except for Griff.

Disposal is very poor all over the ground and our leaders have severe limitations - football wise. When we finally do all the things right up the ground we have to kick it to Gia. These are real problems that take more than a few years to fix.

A teacher can be as patient, kind, challenging, inspiring and follow the curriculum to perfection. But if the students are just plain dumb then all that is wasted - albeit it that they may be able to achieve a little more than without that teacher. I fear that this may be Macca.

We need some time to rebuild - absolutely. I watched the whole game yesterday and tried to watch for what Macca was saying. "When these kids compete against similar aged opponents they invariably win that contest." Yep saw some of that for a while. Yep lack of strength and fatigue crept in quickly after half time. But it was like watching a pack of killer whales circling and playing with their prey - inevitably the pack wins. I found myself watching and trying to argue positives with my mate. But I ultimately came back to the same conclusion. We have some very very very average players in our team. Will they ever be any good?

I suppose time will tell. Maybe Macca is the man. But I feel that we have a prolonged period outside of the 8 and at least another 12 months of non-competitive 4 quarter football.

Linkman, the club has already identified we need fast outside players, and that is who they are targeting in the draft.

Because they play for the bulldogs, Libba and Wallis, just don't get a mention, but believe me other clubs would salivate at getting them. Imagine them complimented by two gun outside midfielders in the ilk of Griffin or Cooney and let's not forget Dalhaus (sp).

This will mean that the ball will get into the 50 a lot quicker, and won't allow the opposition to enjoy the time they have now in setting up. Our ruck stocks look OK, Minson will be around for a bit longer, and to see Roughy developing another position other than just ruck is huge.

We have a lot of forward options, and a couple of them will develop, Dickson is already showing he is a keeper. We are playing a young team, you would think maybe a a few won't make it, but others will.

Finally, if that won't convince you, think of Plough walking out on the club in 2002? stating that we had no decent kids, those kids he didn't rate went on to play three back to back preliminary finals. The only piece we missed was the elusive full forward to take us all the way.

Markovic just isn't up to afl standard, forward or back.

We're gonna be fine. I'd like to think im a realist and I think we are a fair chance to win the spoon next season, but I genuinely see a possible finals berth in 2014 and a surprise top 4 slot in 2015.

Melbourne might have something to say about that. Draft day has become their grand final.

Reading about Cooney on the afl website... i'm going to preface this by saying it probably won't happen, but
what if Cooney can play the majority of our games next year with his new training ethos? the club seems to think there's been a little breakthrough with regards to him keeping fit without smashing the knee off the field..
If our midfield had Cooney, Griff and an imrpoved Wallis and Libba next year, would we climb fast?
but as i said... probably all just very false hope

We'd need to find a forward line first. :p

true. i think my mental health will be better served if i expect another lowly year next year.
I just can't wait to see it all come together. We've seen glimpses this year, but my god these kids can play. Going to be a rough couple of years ahead, but I'm bloody excited - more excited than I was heading into 2007/8, and that's saying something.

i like this post, its something i think we can all feel. that were gonna be an honest footy side and it all should be pretty sustainable.

If it wasnt for GWS and Gold Coast we would have won three games equalling Peter Rohdes worst effort
The coach said the Sydney thrashing was an abhoration..It wasnt
The coach said we were going to be hard to play against and ultra competitive..we werent
The coach said the goals would take care of themselves ... they didnt
The realationship with our VFL collapsed..now we have to pay for a team ourselves and we are broke
The players look disinterested .. they drop their heads at the drop of a hat
Our percentage is worse than Melbournes
Nathan Djekerra played a lot of games
No one comes to watch us play

Comrades give me the upside!

Hate to agree but he has a point. :(:(
The only upside is the promise shown by the kids.
