Opinion Magpie Millions - The Collingwood Lottery

Maybe thread worthy, maybe not. How do we feel about the 'Magpie Millions' initiative that was launched today?

For those who haven't heard, the club has launched a Collingwood lottery in which people pick a set of 6 current day players, and then one past legend (which I'm assuming serves as like a supplementary).

Prizes include things from cash to memoribilia and exclusive game day opportunities.

It's $2.50 a game, with the maximum per player being $20 a week, and players must be over the age of 18.

I personally won't play as I'm more of a sports betting type punter if ever I do bet, but I'm sure there's plenty of lotto players out there who might enjoy it.

100% of the proceeds go to charity.

There's a video on the club website but I can't link it because I'm on my phone.

How do we feel?

Just trying to get more money out of Members. Though Nice it Goes to Charity Though

Your second sentence is completely at odds with the first.

I wouldn't be in favour if it was simply a revenue raiser for the club (we already have too much gambling related income), but as it goes toward funding our community programs I'm fine with it. This type of thing is how a lot of charities raise a good proportion of their money.

I have an idea on how to promote social programs and community benefit from a gambling related initiative.

Take our pokies and bury them at sea.

Use them as anchors on owners of gambling sites would make a better viewing experience.

Rubbish. When I heard about the Million Dollar Collingwood lottery I thought it was a lame reference to our draft or the teams endurance session with Davoren.
Any form of gambling is a no. Perhaps if Holden throws in a free car or two for the price money, I hate to see us wasting time and money on this. The administration is already burdened with the AFLW and Netball team. And so far success in 2 out of 3 is not apparent .

I have one specially prepared for Bruce Mathieson.

They seem to be losing touch with reality and alienating their supporter base.

If they really want to raise money for charity, organise something like phone in or charge for open day and money give to charity.
Seems like a thought bubble from some highly paid guru from UK.
Don't think they realise that there are some families that are really doing it tough.

"The first draw will take place next Thursday, with Collingwood chief executive Gary Pert saying all profits from the lottery will be channelled back to the club’s many welfare programs, community partnerships and grassroots activities."

That can be bloody anywhere, did Eddie put all his cash on Mundene aye

From the FAQs

The whole board is made of Super Rich pricks.
All they think is about making money - no matter what consequences.
I highly doubt any of them have an idea how normal people live.
They got the idea from UK from what I read somewhere.
They will probably rig the draw somehow.o_Oo_Oo_O

100% of the money that collingwood gets goes to charity.....Activista which is the stock market listed company and the other joint venture partner probably takes a percentage of the take before it goes to collingwood...

so it's a bit like saying that the TAB gives all its money to charity and sporting organisations after it has taken out it's share....

Our Club trying to be Mother Teressa with a base ball bat!

FFS just concentrate on winning Premierships..............that is our core business.

The reality is we aren't that good at doing that either!!!

Part of our community programs are football academies including the next generation academy, which hopefully will see us draft indigenous and multicultural players via priority access. Potentially there's a slight chance this lottery will help us on field some time down the track.

It definitely smacks of something that has come out of the UK ... it seems to be similar concept to Britain's National Lottery - using a lottery system to raise money for good (in Britain it's used to fund pubilic projects)

It's a nice idea to start a fundraising project to help charitable organisations but ...

... running a lottery is kind of thing that organisations did in the 90's. Gambling isn't for everyone, but even for those who do enjoy a punt, i can't imagine that there'd be too many who'd be busting for something else to punt on. Surely gambling has long reached saturation?

It's 2017. They way the world works with helping charities in this era is by setting up crowd sourcing projects.

I found it interesting that it is registered in the NT. Victoria has much stricter regulations on gambling and I think it takes a bigger slice. (I may be wrong but seem to recall something about NT).

Question: Those of you that do gamble with agencies, are most registered in NT?
