I think the AFL cant win in this situation.
What more can they actually do?
There will unfortunately always be players with mental health issues that may slip through the net.

Very sad news, people often think they must have the best life earning amazing money and playing a game we all love plus all the other perks of being a sports celebrity.

But everyone has issues and mental demons no matter how successful you are, It just depends on our ability to cope or seek help.. Im sure growing up in Sudan and I assume seeing alot of tragedy can never be forgotten about.

I attempted suicide 5 years ago and spent 3 weeks in a coma as a result, It truly is the toughest fight you will ever have in you're life and its even harder when you don't even know what is the source.. You just feel like shit all day every day..

I hope Majak comes out the otherside on top and he is in a great support system to help him through the journey...

I actually hate North with a passion.. But there is no player I now will be barracking for harder to get back to his feet than Daw.
Thanks for sharing. Glad you got through it all :thumbsu:

We don't even know that him jumping off the bridge was mental health related at this stage. He could have been high on Hallucinogens for we all know.

He wasn't on drugs or anything.

He's pretty lucky.

Pretty embarrassing for me, but I survived a 50ft jump 7 years ago. Lucky to be alive but injuries I'm left with are permanent. Had to have both ankles fused back on, had compound fractures on both legs to both tibia and fibulas, punctured lung, cracked ribs..... yeah. Can no longer run, walk with a limp, gets painful after walking any longer than ~2 miles. Embarrassing but something I guess I have to live with.

Don't be embarrassed about it.

Then why not just state it? I don't understand. Here we are trying to lift the stigma as a society, why simultaneously trying to keep it hush hush.

Generally suicide reporting needs to be don’t very sensitively there has been studies linked to increases in attempts when it is talked about in the media or if a high profile person does commit or attempt it can increse this effect

Some even go as far to say that suicide is contagious

Got rods in both legs and screws everywhere and had over 400 stitches. Can no longer run, walk with a limp, gets painful after walking any longer than ~2 miles. Nothing to be embarrassed about just be thankful you’re still here.

I have attempted suicide a few times many years ago, thankfully the only long lasting injuries are a few scars and liver issues.

It’s a dark tunnel and a extremely tough time, probbly made worse for him that it been made public.

I hope he finds the help and peace he desperately needs, thankfully no doubt he will find so many rallying behind him to help him.

As this is a confirmed and current news story it has been moved to the main from the rumours board. Warnings about below the line comments remain in effect

You must have been in a very dark place Ed

The players may earn huge money and the pitfalls of the career is scrutiny, most of the scrutiny is unnecessary. Media needs to make huge inroads into stop reporting such negative stories about players and their worth/form to a team.

Whether this is something directly related , no one knows but people like Caro, Robbo and Barrett love to break a story with a negative influence and don't give two hoots who is on the end of it

I agree that it needs to stop, but the media keep reporting it because the public lap that crap up.
The biggest stories are the ones that target players and clubs, the media only care about what is in it for them.
Would need a whole culture change for it to stop, and i can't see it occurring.

Aren’t players taught/coached/counselled from day 1 on dealing with media, speaking with media and also taught how to avoid and handle scrutiny. It’s part of the package and in the grand scheme of the thing a bit 1st world problem. The worst I’ve seen is the treatment of Ben cousins, other than that it’s pretty fair game.

I would bet if he jumped the problems will not relate to the media at all, it’s going to be something external and private, family or relationship problems, under the influence of something, I say these things as an example and nothing official. How the media handle and report on the situation from now is a different thing entirely.

It is a fantastic and dream opportunity to play AFL. But if you’re a player and you stumble across a forum like BF where so many posters (myself included) criticise and take pot shots at players, whether or not under the guise of “constructive criticism”, it would be very easy for your self esteem to drop dramatically
