Imagine if US gun laws were like that in Australia though, the 6 people dead would turn into like 30 dead.

Glad the John Howard Government brought back all the guns.
The most recent mall shooting in the US claimed the same amount of lives as this incident.

"Our tragedy was lesser than the US cos no guns" rhetoric is such a holier than thou attitude

That's an incredibly stupid thing to say.
Compare the amount of random gun killings to random knife mass killings. It's not even close to the same.

Im not comparing the number of incidents, I am rebutting the 'it would have been way worse if he had a gun' narrative. It could have been, it also could not have been.

This incident has exactly zero to do with the US but people are bringing it up because in their mind its a, 'oh but in the US.....' to try and downplay this atrocity.

Uh no.
People referenced the US because there was some talk online that if the public had guns then a guy couldn't walk freely around stabbing people.

don't believe a single person here downplayed it at all

This person looks legit if you read several replies and seems to think the guy was on ice, so he could have said anything.

ETA: Also Daily Terror also have the name of the woman with the baby who has been killed, and I’d say they know who the perpetrator is even if they are not revealing the name, so if there was a connection I would think they’d have said something.

Reported she is the daughter of an ex vfl footballer...so sad. Please remove this if it is not suitable for this forum.

So you reckon this is not a psychosis brought on by meth and some sort of mental illness?
People with mental illness are not more violent. The narrative about "oh he must have had a mental illness" is a way of othering people with a lived experience of mental illness and perpetuates stigma.

Or another way of saying it, shit people shouldn't get excuses for being shit people.

I'm not talking about depression, I'm saying a psychotic episode.

I'd like to know some information on the policewomen, experience etc.

There is a video going around of her running through the mall toward the attacker, excellent work by her.
She's an absolute hero. I hope she doesn't suffer any after effects from shooting someone, she saved her own and others lives.

Everything I say here is to everyone, as I don't want to see this tragedy, that hasn't even been comprehended yet descend rapidly into a slug fest of ideologies and wheelbarrows of cant and conspiracy.
People get re-traumatised when events like this happen so please bear in mind that it is all too soon for many, will always reopen their scars and fears. Let's not make things worse for them in our discussing aspects of this, be kind to each other there is enough harshness as it is.

No thanks, I don't want to imagine anything further nor get into mathematical comparisons to further a position.
6 people dead. 6 lives that have connections to many, many others. It is way to soon.
What happened to taking pause and thinking of the humans who are traumatised right now.
There seems to be more of a disregard for the police and authority since covid and the lockdowns.
Covid. There are thousands of stories and ways that 'Covid' tore the fabric of society apart. It is not a simpilistic situation, interactions across many, many areas of our society are playing out, are still percolating away and are yet to come to any conclussions.
Trust once broken is hard to get back.
Combine 'Covid' with the already complex 'information age' & anchor-less people that feel betrayed and lost in society. Whether that be through; more of life's pressurecooker, more will to escape that pressure through drink, drugs or other addictive behaviours, the scramble to find your feet again (both metaphorically or actual) or the magnification of problems that have always existed...we have to remember that it is up to us to repair and recover our society...it's always been the social compact of civilisation.
Perperator was homeless, this is what can happen when mental illness meets drugs and sleeping on the streets.
Yes, that is true in a general sense and I believe you are not saying it is because of mental illness but because of interacting elements.
The Mental Health Services are besieged, under funded and flawed.
We don't know yet who this perp is yet in detail and understanding how anyone can do this is a natural desire to make sense of it.
I do know that 'Hurt people hurt people'.

Alot being said about the apparent bravery of the police officer, but I think if most people had a gun and the other had only a knife, they would feel pretty confident about winning that one.
Are you shitting me?
She went in by herself with no idea exactly what she was coming up against. Could have been multiple people with anything

Sorry you weren't the hero this time maybe give her some credit ffs

Except it as a live scene with thousands of people around, unknown number of assailants and she was moving towards the danger.

It’s ****ing brave.
