With the trades complete, and our draft selections pretty well fixed, it is interesting to consider how the team will marshal its assets next year.
The forward line is crowded with medium players who are fast and can mark. Elliott will make another such, who will threaten Thomas' position. Mihocek and Cox, as the tall incumbents don't look under threat, so Reid will probably be in the VFL. Not much controversial here.
The midfield is crowded too, with Beams coming in to put pressure on Seir's spot. I would hate to see him back in the VFL, but barring injuries to some of the others, fitting him in will be tough. Places for Aish, Greenwood and Mayne, despite their reasonable to good performances this year, will be hard to find. Mayne looks to have the strongest grip on his place.
The backline remains in flux. You would expect Roughead to come in, given he was recruited for this line, as well as Moore. With Langdon and Howe, it is actually starting to look a little top heavy, especially when Dunn and Scharenberg complete rehab. The smaller defenders in Crisp and Maynard seem fixed, with Appleby putting serious pressure on both, but starting behind them.
If there are few injuries during the preseason, the senior side looks pretty good.
In the VFL, preparing our backup players will be challenging. Assuming Kelly comes, we will be trying to fit in the two tall Irishmen, Reid, McLarty, Lynch, Goldsack, Kelly and perhaps Roughead. This is a lot of tall players, most of whom are young and in need of development games. If they are all fit (a bit unlikely), then we will once again be playing unbalanced VFL sides that will struggle to make finals, as we had to when we had Witts, Cox and Ceglar developing.
Injuries will keep things fluid, but it actually seems to me that we have gambled pretty heavily on outside the box tall players for our future, have perhaps too many such and no draft flexibility for next year to get a high end pick to cover us if the gamble is a failure.
