Mark Seaby

Well Seaby is the one I've wanted at Port all along.. fortunately the ineptitude of Peter Rhode may work in our favour through his inability to get Griffin who I didn't want in the first place. What's he worth - anyone's guess?

Seaby is a lot better than people are giving him credit for, he would be playing every game if it wasn't for the sub rule and Mumford's rapid rise.

I would want to see better than pick 40-60 and am surprised Richmond haven't gone after him as he's a lot better than Maric.

Totally agree.

Seaby would be much better than Maric. I guess that's why Richmond have only played finals twice in 30 years. They always chase the Jordan McMahon types and not the Mark Seaby types.

Character alone may not win premierships but it sure builds a club culture, and culture does help to win premierships.

No need to be a ******** is there? IIRC most West Coast supporters on here couldn't believe their luck when the Eagles got what they got for Seaby.

Wasn't trying to be a smartarse. Seaby was part of a three way trade that sent Staker and Buchanan to Brisbane, Dalziell to West Coast and Seaby to Sydney with some trade picks shuffled around. From memory we were happy that we got anything for Seaby as there wasn't much interest in him.

End result was that the club helped find Seaby a new home where it was thought he would have more opportunity without demanding much in return. It seems that you guys are on the verge of doing something similar which is the point I was trying to make.

FWIW, Sydney are the club that all others should learn from when it comes to trade week - you have an uncanny knack of identifying fringe players at other clubs that will be of use to you and manage to secure them with a fair trade that often looks cheap in hindsight. On the flipside you rarely seem to make things overly complicated for departing players.

Your original comment seemed pretty snide lol, my apologies if it wasn't inteded to come off that way.

I really don't believe West Coast got less than what Seaby is worth, but I think we're about to.

Good analysis.

Mumford is #1 with daylight second.

Seaby just doesn't have the versatility to be a second ruckmen, but deserves a go at another club and is a decent and skilled AFL footballer.

Some Swans have got very carried away with Pyke, given he's a feel good story. He's done one or two flashy things in field play and is a decent tap ruckman, but won't make it. If you watch him closely he can sprint but doesn't have the aerobic capacity required to go for contest after contest, or the foot skills, or the contested marking skills, or, whatever else you need to be an AFL player. He simply hasn't grown up playing so simple things like consistently judging the flight of the ball and body on body in marking contests are real problems.

Then we have White/LRT who are both decent options as second ruckman (well ahead of Pyke in terms of structural needs). Jesse is a better ruckman (and contests reasonably well up fwd) but LRT a better KPP and player overall.

Currie is unproven.

You are correct that if Mummy goes down we have issues.

Pyke won't be on an AFL list beyond next year.

Fair to say I disagree, but not to the 'getting carried away' extent.

When Mummy went out last year you could see the improvement in Pyke's ruck work and follow up play and there is no mistaking the physicality in his tackles is following on from Mumford's style.

Add to that he's become a decent kick from a set shot and has a pretty damned good set of hands and you'dve seen more of Mike this year without his injuries.

I think you'll see him play the majority of next year barring us getting a fulltime FF in place, and he'll most definately be on an AFL list (ours) beyond next year.

I think it was stated earlier, but Seaby is a ruckman, not a ruckman/forward etc., he needs to play the majority of the game in the ruck. He can't do that at Sydney because of Mummy, he was forced out at WCE because of Cox and the drafting of Nic Nat.

Richmond are idiots, they could have picked him up of Sydney for peanuts and far better than Maric, Seaby has always acquitted himself well when given an extended run as the no. 1. Won't be a top 5 ruck, but will also not let you down.

By all reports he's also a good guy.

Agreed. Could not for the life of me work out why Richmond would go after Maric when Seaby was there (only 2 years older) and would have come far cheaper.

If Port get him, they'll have a very solid citizen and a very capable ruckman to pair with Lobbe.

Rumours would suggest we made the right choice there S120.... :D

Can anyone confirm? Seaby flunked a medical?

at least we now know why we could have picked him up for peanuts

Any chance RFC may have known of this? It just seems odd the Tigers never seemingly made a push for his services??

Perhaps they just rated Maric a bit higher and that his big body will be a benefit as No. 1 Ruck......

Happy days....

Apparently Dimma quite likes Maric. I think he likes the aggression, and whilst I'm not overly familiar with Seaby's game, I understand he's not overly aggressive. Perhaps too much of Angus Graham about him (Gus can play, but is a pea heart).

Plus, Maric is young enough to be our #1 ruck for 3 or 4 years if it takes that long for his heir to develop. At this point it seems we rate Browne as a long term prospect. I have my doubts, but he is only 21, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he could come good. He might take the full 3 or 4 years though, and Seaby is every chance to be finished in a couple of years, especially if he flunked a medical... We don't want to be shopping for another mature ruck in another 2 years time.
