RICHMOND premiership player Marlion Pickett has been granted bail by a Perth magistrate after being charged over a string of alleged burglaries in which currency was stolen from safes.

Police remanded Pickett in custody on Sunday - a day after he played in the Tigers' 15-point win over Fremantle at Optus Stadium - alleging he was involved in commercial burglaries between December and January.

The 31-year-old appeared in the dock in Perth Magistrates Court on Monday, wearing a black sweatshirt.

He only spoke to confirm his name and was not required to enter pleas.

A police prosecutor told the court the alleged offending by Pickett and others involved a series of commercial burglaries resulting in the theft of more than $380,000 in Australian and foreign currencies from within safes.

Pickett is facing 12 charges including four counts of aggravated burglary, three counts of stealing and three counts of criminal damage.

Prosecutors opposed bail, saying there was a risk Pickett would reoffend if he was released.

Pickett's lawyer David Manera said the prosecution case rested largely on allegations deposits were made into his bank account by his co-offenders and that a camper-van rented in his name was driven interstate by the other men.

Magistrate Erin O'Donnell said the allegations were serious but she was confident Pickett did not present a significant flight risk.

She granted bail on the condition Pickett resides at his address in the Melbourne suburb of Reservoir, reports weekly to a local police station, does not interact with his alleged co-offenders and provides a $50,000 personal surety.

I have a feeling he will be guilty by association, he did it for his wife. Maybe not physically but i reckon he did hire the vehicle used, purchased all the gear to do the heist and gave it to his criminal brother in law not thinking of the ramifications.
If that’s the case, he’s just as guilty as the others…The Court won’t pick and choose, it’s a group sentence…But they’d want to have their ducks in a row…There’s already been a fair bit of trial by media/by association…A good lawyer - which Marlion will have the benefit of having - will drill holes through it…

Yes, former copper of 22 years…And I’m glad I can say the first bit…
Please tell me being a cop in real life is like being a cop in housos. Those guys are awesome.

It it were first offence I’d have more hope he could get off lightly , he has form and WA are notoriously tough on indigenous thru the courts , recall stack being incarcerated for a month for trivial matter , Andy krak imprisoned for brutal assault, first offence

Good points Bo…But I was surprised by the loose bail conditions…They needed a lot more evidence, and a lot more time…

Not sure about being a cop in Trailer Park Boys though;)

Andy krak imprisoned for brutal assault, first offence
Prosecutor Bruno Fiannaca told the trial that Mr Martin was left in a coma after the attack and had suffered ongoing psychological problems.

Handing down the sentence, Judge Kate O'Brien said the family feud and the punch to Krakouer five years earlier was no justification for the actions of the brothers and a third man involved in the assault.

"He (Andrew) appeared oblivious to calls for him to stop his attack," Judge O'Brien said.
"Those who witnessed it were shocked and horrified at the ferocity of the attack.
"It was brutal and cowardly.
"It must have been clear to (both of) you that Justin Martin stood no chance against you and the other man.

Do the crime, do the time especially as the victim was left in a coma.

He pleads not guilty and adjourned until next year and make sure he gets named every game

then adjourn again if needed

could go on for years

Club should not be playing him period.

Playing a guy under consideration for charges which another person has already pleaded guilty to. That this other person has pleaded guilty for these & other crimes, that includes crimes against children is NOT the Richmond way.

Sorry Marlion, but your time is up until the charges are cleared up. I don't want him being a 100 game player if he ends up being guilty alongside this disgusting dog

Mr Pickett was forced to apply for financial hardship after having his salary slashed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The father of four was being paid a second-year rookie list player’s salary, which is about $85,000.
But when the AFL shut down during the pandemic, which led to pay cuts for players, Mr Pickett was living on about $3000 per month.
Fans rallied to help by donating to a GoFundMe page to raise money for the young family.

What an absolute blight on the AFL that is. How the f did they allow that to happen? So a member of the current Premiership team, who was about to be a member of the next premiership team too - had to live in finacial hardship & required fans to fund his family etc? Just 3 months after the entire league and its media made him the darling/hero of the biggest game of the year?

Was Gil's pay cut to a point where he had to live with financial hardship? Or Dimma's. Dangerfields etc? Where the f where the Players Association on that one? The AFL & the club totally FEASTED on the Marlion story after the 2019 GF - then left him totally out to dry 3 months later to live in poverty. That ain't right. I can sympathise a bit more now in the "why" he did what he did. He would not trust anyone this guy

I understand COVID was a tough time financially, but ****ing seriously - surely the AFL could use some common sense and not cut a guy who alreay had a low pay, had 4 kids to support, was a mature age recruit in his first 12 months in the system etc. And surely the club and the playing group could have sorted that issue out before fans were required to set up a go-fund me

pretty terrible situation from all involved really. You can see how he resorted to desperate measures

The "blanket" rules over covid look more & more idiotic as the time passes.

2 people accused of 12 robbery related charges. The Co accused has a diferent strategy. Pickett has been given bail, he has a legal strategy to fight the charges.

Bail: means he's free to do what he likes until the trials. Football is his job, he played OK this season, albeit out of position.

The Crimes against the kids, don't involve Pickett do they?

The federal govt shut everything down. Early 2020, But there were job keeper payments available. I easily received some myself. It was never easier, Service Australia? Not the hoops you normally have to jump through.

2020 AFL players were on reduced wages, but Pickett was at the hub in Qld. I seem to recall Pickett jumping from match payments to a 350,000 contract instantly.

The robberies take place over a summer a couple of years ago; back on full pay. Sadly the total stolen was $300, 000

Pickett and his RFC connection could make that easily, after he retires.

thats the mystery

pretty sure you explore every nook and cranny to see where you can post some more negative and uneducated spin and grandstanding about the Tigers

Exactly my first thought as well, all bias to one side. In fact it has been stated he will plead not guilty iirc. Time will tell!

That’s 300k divided by the 4-5 of them or however many there were. All for 50-60k when he earns about 3-400k a season.

You’re correct RE the timeline, he was well and truly on a good wage for 2 years before this happened so that poster was incorrect to insinuate he did this bc he wasn’t being paid

The adrenaline rush of shop lifting is one
of thing...
Family peer pressure?
Kinda sad . He is AFL standard player still, when it all finishes , be good to employ Pickett somewhere.
KGI?

Well at this stage he’s been convicted of nothing regarding this and if it was an Open and shut case I’m sure the case would have been heard and done maybe it’s not so straight forward, let’s face it his alleged partner is sleazy in the lockup
