Rambo made life very difficult for Kelly and was helped by Newsteads fantastic pressure all over the ground. Maldon seemed off the boil but that is becoming the norm for teams playing the roos! Tommy Reece proves that his hammies are fine bagging 10 and young Matty Merlo played well in his first senior outing.

Newstead though need to maintain their aggressive free flowing footy however with tough matches coming up against rovers and avoca both away in the next two weeks

Good to see the roo's starting to play to their potential, maldons form had been good coming into this game. Newsteads reserves are going well too with a few players their that can come up if needed so the depth is looking good.
Seem to have a good balance around the ground but the mext couple of weeks will test although the Rovers and Avoca grounds will suit Newstead better than the small ground at Newstead so they should be 2 good games.
Good to see Tommy kick 10 and Matty Merlo has been in the best almost every week in the 2s so he deserved to have a run.
Will be interesting to see how Maldon bounce back
Good to see so many ex players there watching today as well

This is prob a dumb question but why is there no results from the Harcourt v Creek game from the weekend?? Was it played or was it moved to another date??

Also notice that Jeremy Robinson is heading back to Brook from Queensland. I have a crap memory... he goes alright doesn't he?

According to the ladder on the league website , Dunolly has 4 points gone missing from the bye earlier in the year. Anyone spotted these points anywhere? Dunolly would like them back I am sure as they should be second on the ladder at the moment instead of third. Hope these points turn up again. Contact the league if you see them anywhere.

Good news for the Eagles - the missing 4 points have been found and they brought another bonus 4 points home with them. We would love to keep them but I think we haven't earned them. We should be on 32 points but we seem to have jumped from 28 to 36 points in the space of a morning. :)

Very good pick up for the eagles!

On the weekends footy, going to be a couple of games that have the potential to break the ladder up a bit IMO.

Dunolly V Talbot game will be a ripper. One that Talbot can't afford to drop as it would almost assure them of not finishing top three. Dunolly on the other hand will be trying their best to secure the points as a win would almost certainly get them a finals birth and a good chance at making the top 3.

Maldon V Harcourt is another game which could go either way. A win to Harcourt could nearly put them within touch of making the finals and a loss for Maldon would really put the pressure on them..

Creek V Trentham will be one where the boys are all up and about.. I would expect that creek get the points at home in a close one! Both sides will enjoy a competitive game for a change i would expect.

Yes couple of massive games this weekend.

Our game should be a ripper hopefully and i would expect it to be a fairly physical and tough affair. Dunolly have stated they will field all their guns and with the signing of Ahmat they will be very tough to beat.

We will be without Bright but apart from that we should be nearly full strength. A win for us would see us into top 3 contention so losing this game will be extremely disappointing i feel personally.

I think it will be a game of match ups and who ever can get them right on the day will walk away with the 4 points. We have played 2 games in the last month so our bodies should be reasonably fresh for this encounter one would hope.

I agree Sherman but i think the game holds more signifigance for you guys. Dunnolly are a game clear in second and if are to win on the weekend could nearly push Talbot out of the five. It would also give Harcourt a sniff of september action and with the lions starting to play some good footy, could start to worry the hawks. I think this is one of Talbots more important matches for the year. Being a Newstead supporter I will be hoping that Talbot get up in a what will be a very tight game.
Talbot by 5 points

Rovers V Newstead is also a huge match as the two sides have had very close encounters over the past few years, with position on the ladder counting for nothing. Newstead havent won at Hedges Oval for a number of years and this will give the Rovers boys a lot of confidence going into the match. Maryborough need to find a way to stop Newsteads run and carry all over the ground because if they are allowed space they may blow the game open.
Newstead by 5 goals

Great news about Ahmat. Will only increase the standard and bring more exposure to the league which is a positive. Would have preferred him to have his eagles debut on another week though!

Some really interesting games this week, with a couple of games that could really shape the final 5 and a battle for the wooden spoon!

Maldon v Harcourt - Going for Harcourt in an upset. Maldon have run into some bad form and have been found wanting by some of the better teams in the competition. Shtting down Kelly seems to be the key to beating Maldon. If Harcourt can continue their good form they are a big chance of having a win on the smaller Maldon ground. Harcourt are a physical side and this ground should suit them. A loss to Maldon would be a disaster!

Creek v Trentham - Creek are the better side on paper and should win this at home.

Carisbrook v Royal Park - An absolute must win for Carisbrook. Should win rhis one easily.

Dunolly v Talbot - I'm expecting a big game from the Talbot boys this week after having a very easy month where they have only played 2 games of football. Hopefully Bond, Watson, Bench and co can be on target up forward in what is a big game for the botters. Will be tight but Talbot to get up!

Rovers v Newstead - I expect Rovers to start running out of steam in the second half of the season. Newstead will need to play well to get the points on Jubilee though but i expect them to win comfortably.

Interesting read on Central Vic Footy with Coaches comments from Trethowan and Taylor on there. www.********************** going to be a big round of matches.

Tight???? last time i looked a 100 point win wasnt all that tight of a contest, quite one sided. I have noticed week after week everyone on here isnt giving Dunolly enough credit for how well they are going, given i think they only won 4 or so games last year and now they are sitting clear on 2nd on the ladder with winning 8 games in a row, and the only 2 games they lost this year being against carisbrook which was by under 2 goals and avoca which was by a point i think. Presently they are playing very consistent football which at the moment will put them into a very comfortable position in serious contention for a run come the grand final.

From what i have seen so far this season, dunolly have had to buy there players, how long are these ex afl players going to stick around for? How many of there senior side are local? We will see where there are in a few years.

Dunolly have picked up good recruits as it shows, beating a finals contender team like Talbot by 100points today. The thing is, majority of the team is linked to Dunolly in some way apart from a small selection. Most have played junior footy or cricket with Dunolly, lived in Dunolly and are good mates with the players that have signed up. How many sides in this league have majority of its side all locals??

Any true honest footballer i bet would love to play side by side or even against former afl players, and to anyone who says that they wouldn't, your crazy

Dunolly would have to have one of the best groups of juniors coming through and the experience these afl players may have on them should be great.

For a club to bring some ex afl players to the league and boost its level of footy, well i thought people would be excited rather than complaining.

Around 15 or 16 of last years players were in the side today, and of the others that didn't play last year, McNamee played juniors at Dunolly, Lee Stewart from Maryborough, and Dan Schupan junior cricket at Dunolly, so the only ones that may not be classified as local today were Karpany, Motlop and Ahmat, along with Sanders who lives in Maryborough and Charleston who goes to uni with a few of the guys. So I'd have to say apart from the high profile players most would be staying for what hopefully is sustained sucess over the next few years, meaning playing in and winning finals games. And from what I've seen, both Shannon and Robbie love playing and giving something back to country football, and TK is living in Maryborough.

I'd say thats a pretty local team, where only 19 of the 22 players live or have lived within 20 mins of Dunolly.

With respect Black Ice , how much have you seen this season so far? In terms of "buying" players I can safely say that Dunolly would not have a player in the top 30 of paid players in the league. And yes that includes the fellas from the Wanderers. Motlop has played four games so far for two wins and though he is a massive addition to the side , Dunolly have won the majority of their games without him. Robbie Ahmat came down at the request of good friend Shannon who wanted to play alongside him for the first time despite being long time mates. I know this has been stated many times before but I will make it clear again at the risk of boring everyone to tears. There is a sister club arrangement with the Wanderers which have enabled these recruits to line up for the Eagles. Try and digest this information and realise that not everyone is chasing big money to massage their ego. Some blokes still genuinely love chasing the pill and blokes like Karpany are testament to that.
In terms of "locals" , anyone who follows Dunolly closely would know that the vast majority are people who have played juniors at the club , either long term or have returned after playing elsewhere.
Liddicoat , Leirich , Mottram , the Stiles' ,Joe Thompson , Sullivan , Perry and Turner are all integral youngsters to the side and yes all LOCAL. A better group of young footballers who are hungry to improve you would be hard pressed to find. Throw in Edwards , Brady ,Burn ,captain Schodde , Gibbs and the McNamee's who have returned and you may start getting the picture that the vast core of this side are Dunolly bred.
How long will these ex AFL players 'hang around'? Well who knows but at the moment they all seem to be enjoying their football at Dunolly and the club loves having them their for plenty of reasons not all footy related. They are top blokes. How long can any club guarantee their 'stars' will hang around for these days but I think while our arrangement with Wanderers continues and everyone is satisfied I don't see why it couldn't continue for a while yet.
Where will Dunolly be in a few years? Sounds a little bit bitter there Black Ice. The commitee is working overtime to ensure the long term viability of the club and at the moment the playing groups' focus is on Carisbrook in two weeks time. Our club has been in the doldrums for a good while and we have had a few wins this year. No big deal I know but trying to bring us down a peg already by questioning our exsistence in the future shows some people mustn't enjoy seeing struggling clubs improve. Personally I think it's great for the league as a whole and I look forward to Trentham , Creek and Bushy hopefully doing the same in the near future.

I would think that you are fooling yourself and everyone else if you think it is costing nothing to get these players to Dunolly. Travel costs alone would amount to a substantial amount. Rumour has it that Grants are available to assist with Travel And Accom for Indigeonous players and credit must go to Dunolly for getting on to this successfully and attracting the right players. The jury will always be out as to justifying short term success against long term results but they are not the first and wont be the last club to go down this path. All in all good luck to Dunolly for getting out of the doldrums but dont keep wheeling out that these recruits are not the difference in the team as they most definitly are the sole reason for improvement.

How many Dunolly games have you watched this season besides the one you played them in? Yes these recruits are good, some great, but if you look at it most of the players Bluey mentioned are enjoying their first season without the burden of playing a 17's game before it. McNamee and Stewart from Rokewood have definitely been fantastic this season, as has Stiles, and also Liddicoat who missed pretty much all last year with a broken wrist. If you looked at the performance on the weekend, yes the big name recruits were very good, but I would have found it very hard anywhere on the ground to find where Talbot actually won a position, and from that we can say the core group of 16 from last year playing yesterday have also made significant improvements to their game.

You would be stupid to say the recruits haven't helped of course they have. Any team wanting to improve fairly rapidly is going to need recruits and a fair few of them. Newstead were average last year, around the same standing as Dunolly, their recruits have also been the major reason why they have improved in leaps and bounds. How long will they stay around, who knows? I think its better this year that there are 7 teams fighting out the top 5 rather than pretty much 5 last year and if that can continue to improve over the years it would be fantastic to see any team have the belief that they can beat any other team, instead of 100-200 point floggings.

It is fantastic to see how the league has improved over the last few years and if that can continue to happen for years to come all the better for the teams and all the supporters.

For a while there has been the stigma of the MCDFL being a substandard league... I'm thinking those people looking into the glasshouse throwing stones would be starting to see a change in their thinking and to me thats fantastic. If that takes the inclusion of a few big names well its fantastic that these people understand the meaning of country football and come and play.

Can anyone give me a rundown on Matt Smith from Talbot. He is having a meeting on Friday with the Ballarat Football Club and would like to no a bit more about him and if he is worth the big coin he is demanding. Didn't get a kick when i watched Inter league...

Not too many teams in the league would have a full quota or list of players that are fully considered to be locals, so i'm not too sure why there seems to be so much angst towards Dunolly on here?? They seem to have done a great job of securing the services of these players from the NT, and they are complimenting the players they had already... Motlop has not played in all of their wins this season, and can't beat 18 blokes alone...

Now onto the more important issue of who will win the big match between Newstead and Avoca?? Avoca have been great obviously not dropping a game as yet, but Newstead seem to have a much more balanced side now with all of their players back in the side and have won the past 4 by a combined 500 odd points!!!

It was a close match first time around, with Avoca coming back from 40 odd points down... what are peoples thoughts on the key match ups, winners??

Didn't clearances close June 30? I also watched that interleague match where he hardly touched it at all. From what I have seen of him, he has fairly good skills, has got pace and a good tank. Plays outside mid and doesn't go in for the hard ball that much, I guess thats why in wet interleague game he was shown as lacking. But then you look at someone like Tom Blackford (I'm not saying they are anywhere near each other in terms of ability because they aren't) he seems to be winning his share of the ball playing outside. So Smith's way of play may be suited in the BFL too.

Yes clearances have closed. This is early talks for next year...

Good player and would do well in the higher level with more room to run. Not sure he would be leaving Talbot as he does seem like a loyal guy though.

Dunolly's improvement comes from improvements off field, better coaches, commitment from the playing group and etc. 2 ex-AFL players is an absolute bonus and is a great experience for us all, but true improvement started on the Mon-Wed-Fri schedule in November. People can say what they want about us, but only a few know the facts and that is where it stays. We are thinking long term at Dunolly, and we want to continue to improve our club so that it can be held in the same regard as the Brooks, Talbots and Harcourt's in the future. Time will tell I suppose.

Newstead should win this weekend. I really think they are in great form at the moment. Since losing to Dunolly they have destroyed everyone in their way. Avoca will be ready for the challenge but I think all teams are beatable this year. An Avoca loss would re-open the race for top spot also where currently it appears they have it secured and we are all fighting for 2-5.
