Guys I'm colour blind! :p

I believe the grounds that are confirmed to be right to go are:

Trentham, Brook, Avoca, Maldon, Talbot and Jubilee.

Hopefully a couple more get up before May 5th but every indication thus far is that we will definately be starting by then.

What about Carisbrook King one of the best around.

Boy's all this doom and gloom about no rain and some chance of no football is getting out of hand. There is a league meeting next Monday night were all club delegates not the administrators will vote on whether to start the season on the 5th of May. The season will start next month, even though it may still be a bit dry, it will rain as it did last year (the worst drought in history). Country towns need football & netball to help the local community survive, so I'm sure we can come up with some short term solutions if we need. Just had a look at Talbot and if that can pass all grounds will pass in this league. If we make a committment to start on the 5th of May, then I'm sure all grounds that are drawn to be used will water as much as possible to get through the 1st week or 2. We won't need huge rains to pass these grounds, if they have already been semi watered.

I admire your posts LTM. A person of great intellect one would presume. I think you have hit the nail on the head with what you have written in bold type.
'King' - be warned.

Cant say I have any info on the Bendigo teams but what can we do. If they're are no posters from over that way we cant do much about it.

Very interesting that Harcourt have not a single clearance in at this stage though.
They have lost Pearson and the 2 Thompsons out of their premiership side of last season. Can we assume that they will be a weaker side this year?

1. Recess is almost a misnomer these days. More and more often it ends up translating to disbanding.

2. Fair proferred point about two many clubs in the area, but Creek is basically a suburb of Castlemaine, and all those other clubs are in different towns, right? Not sure of Castlemaine's pop'n but if you run a comparison with, say, Ararat - 1990s 1 major league club and 5 minor league clubs, 200s 1 major league club and 1 minor league club that gets pasted week after week.
The attrition rate is becoming nothing short of horrendous! :(

Of course the attrition rate is becoming nothing short of horrendous.

Football, whether you like it or not is a business. As with a lot of businesses many are closing down or going belly up. Just a week or so ago the Daisy Hill Store closed. If you stop and think, there has been between 40 to 50 corner shops, servos and small country stores around Maryborough shut in the past decade. My nephew in law was talking to Ballan's coach a couple of weeks ago and he quoted him as saying that Ballan spent about $80 000 (including the coach) for the season on players and didn't make the finals. He was quoted as saying that the top seven teams in the Central Highlands start at $80 000 with the top couple of teams paying in excess of $100 000 on coach & players.
This is part of the reason why Avoca bailed out of the LPFL as the club knew that it would have to find in excess of $60 000 for player payments to become competitive. That's a lot of lamingtons.

So just like small businesses have died in country areas, its not rocket science to work out that while these huge pressures to raise money to be competitive remain, club's will continue to go to the wall.

Look at how many country teams St Arnaud supported with players a decade ago. Now they are battling to be competitive themselves.

Football, whether you like it or not is a business. As with a lot of businesses many are closing down or going belly up.

Your first point is valid Wonker in that football clubs do have to be run as businesses. They are however, not businesses, they are institutions. The people who run them, play for them and support them (with the majority putting in a hundred times more than they take) are custodians of a tradition that may have been going for 100 years or more. If there was no passion involved in that, clubs would have folded decades ago.

Towns struggling to keep their sons, other activities such as Soccer or Skateboarding and the drug scourge are just a few of the challenges we face in the struggle to keep footy relevant.

Just off the top of my head, tendering out a fitness business out of your footy club might be one way to make the footy club 1: open 2: more relevant to your community 3: more profitable.

Given, that idea will not work for all as it might not be commercially viable but footy clubs need to think of ideas out of the square - not just chook raffles and lamingtons.

Newstead have been sliding under the radar nicely. Having lost Christmas Austerberry will hurt. Christmas from all reports is only trying Castlemaine out and if success doesnt look promising the old Christmas tree is straight back. A few possible recruits from Creek (if approved) and Castlemaine will bolster depth and Peter Haddock from Glenroy in the Essendon DFL will be very servicable. Expect Pedretti and Oliver to lace up the boots mid season with Trethowan ready for a big one. Don't right off the Roos.

I think that is why there is so much excitement about round 1 this season Crank as we really dont know who will be there abouts and who wont. It would appear most clubs bar say Dunolly and Creek have a legitimate chance to make the top 5 which is great for the comp.

Christmas will be a big loss. I think the maine will be more than competitive so I would think he would stay. He has a few mates over there that played Newstead juniors. The 2 Austerberry's are handy midfielders and I think that is where they fell down last year so they will need to replace those 2 and find another couple of serviceable midfielders. I think they will slide.

Interesting article I just read in The Age Wonker!

Your right Rich it has been a few years since this many teams fancied themselves as finals chances. Lets just hope it gets under way soon.

Geez, plenty of action in here lately guys. I'm not around anymore so i'm relying on Big Footy to keep me up to date. Plenty of talk about when the season will start but not much about recruits.
Can anybody please tell me how my old boys Rovers will be shaping up this year? When i left it wasn't looking good. I'm really interested to hear how the M/B teams will be looking. Rovers, Bushy, Brook & Maryborough themselves if anyone know's? I've hardly heard anything on here on recruits on these teams/ who they've lost or regained. Any news? :thumbsu:

Agreed, putting the season back has increased the hunger. However there is a fine line between ainticipation and losing interest. I guess we have to be careful we don't cross that line.

Which club do you follow thoroughbred?

i agree with that shamui, there is def a fine line, and from a personel perspective, it has been a very long pre season, and i just cant wait to get into.....although not knowing exactly when we will start is def a low point and is really pissing me off......u can only talk the talk for so long about how u will fair this season....just wanna get out there and walk the talk/walk.....b4 ppl do lose interest.

do u not understand that analogy king rich?? maybe your a bit green still, lol.....in other words we can all sit here and talk about how we are gonna go, but at the end of the day you have to get out there and put the results on the board...and thats what i cant wait doing....is that better or still a bit complex for u backmen......:) :) :D

I believe you are correct Fifth Quarter!

Big turnout at Talbot training tonight and they trained quite well too I might add! Prob the best night for the year thus far as the season is getting closer.

No more praccy matches for Talbot however we are heading out not this weekend but next for a training camp instead. Most of the list will be going at this stage and it should be a good weekend with a bit of hard work and a few cans also! Camp is at an unknown destination at this stage but will be in the Ballarat area.

Any other praccy matches for MCDFL teams this weekend or the next?

You guys are looking the goods KR. I like the feeling Talbot has this season. The whole league is going to be a sight tougher this year. Harcourt will be knocked off. No doubt there.

A team that will feature in the final game of the MCDFL season. We have no doubt.

im thinking harcourt, but by your comment that followed,im leaning towards carisbrook now.....any more hints throughbred.......and yes there is def a good feeling out talbot, we feel that we have recruited a good team for the upcoming season that should be very competitive.
