No, obviously he's progressed enormously. He ran the game out, but looked stuffed a few times. I'm not having a crack at him either, just giving my two cents as to why he might still be catching up with some others on fitness despite the two years you mention.

Also up to this point, Collingwood only regarded Cox as an experimental project and probably weren't willing to invest too much resources into his development. Now that he is starting to show some promise, hopefully Collingwood will take his development more seriously.

But it's the little things Cox does.

He doesn't win the contest?

He brings the ball to ground
Or he does a little tap on
Or he'll block for someone else
Or he'll put a fist in if he thinks he can't mark it

Just amazing nous for a foreigner who only touched a football 2 years ago for the first time.

If Cloke doesn't win a contest, he might as well run off. He's useless.
I agree, Cox and the 'one percenters' he managed to pull off were great to see, especially under the circumstances.

Wouldn't get that from Travis.

What I saw of Cox today he will be our number one ruck in a few years

Erm... already is our best ruckmen.

He is literally our only ruckmen in the past 5 years who can tap the ball TO THE ADVANTAGE OF OUR MIDFIELDERS.

When Grundy or Witts get a tap it goes to our players 33% of the time, the opposition 33% of the time and to no one 33% of the time...

Kind of astonishing that he already has a better footy brain thank Cloke.
Kind of astonishing that you can tell that after just one game!!! Cloke is a 2 time All-Australian, a Premiership player and has kicked 50 goals+ 3 times. I think Cox has a lot to offer and he could well end up being in our best side. I'm very enthusiastic about his prospects. But the insults aimed at Cloke are not really necessary, I certainly hope he is back in our first team very soon.

This.

I wish i could "like" this post 10 times..

Exactly right. In the game today, when Cox rucked, we got clearances, our midfield got some great taps to advantage. Totally opposite to when Grundy rucked.

Mason fights for every inch... drops a contested mark and follows the ball all the way to the ground and taps the ball off his knees to advantage to score a goal for the team...

Mason Cox is best 22 easily.

Well done son... You deserve the black and white stripes.

Taps the ball to advantage of our mids...

Yes he does.

I have missed seeing it for years.

It's just Collingwood fans venting at Cloke for not performing at expected levels after receiving an overinflated contract deal.

Agree with all this. He straightened us up and then made sure he contested whenever the ball came his way. He didn't win them all and looked a bit cumbersome at times but gave 100% and had a team first approach. Hope he continues to develop and plays a heap of games for us.

On that note, I think our best structure is a key ruck, two key forwards and a third forward who does back up ruck. This year's been a bit of a disaster so far but if we still think that the Pies can challenge from 2017 on then who fills these positions?

Cox already appears to be our best tap ruck but neither Grundy or Witts looks like being a forward yet so if Cox is lead ruck, the other two are gone.

If Grundy is our ruck with Moore and Cloke as forwards that leaves one position for a forward/ruck. This could be Cox but White was recruited for this role and has never been given a chance at it. If this happens, there's no place for Witts and if Witts is first ruck there's no place for Grundy.

If we were to win the flag in 2018 I'd say Moore and Cloke at FF and CHF, Grundy in the ruck and Cox as a third mobile target, rucking about 25% of the time. Howe is another target with Reid and Brown still holding down the key posts. That leaves White and Witts out of our team and makes Cox the first American to win an AFL premiership medallion.

Permission to post on your board ....I hope its accepted.

I was so excited to see the Big Fella kick the first goal of the game.
I yelled yes when he took the mark.

Heart in mouth .... come on.... come on fairy tail stuff ...nail it big fella .

He slots its .

Dick head ( yeah thats me ) jumps up screams you " F@*&Ing beauty."

Wife come into the lounge room... says "I though Collingwood were playing Essendon , what with the excitement !!!???? "

I reply " an American in his first ever game kicks a goal with his first ever kick ... how f@*&ing goods that !!! "

Wife looks at me and shakes her head...... alas not for the first time... and doubt its going to be the last. ;)

Jest aside . What a wonderful debut and a nod of approval to your Club for having the vision and balls to recruit him.

As we have said for a decade or so in the West we love ......Big Cox.

Well done Pies . :thumbsu:

I reckon he can actually play, mobile with good visions and hands and possibly does not understand goal kicking yips - that is a good thing.

the good or bad thing is, depending on your POV, is that there is probably plenty like him in America.

A bit better than a 3 possession game you'd have to say.

Yeah, but that'll come if he keeps getting AFL games.

It was a promising performance but still clearly a work in progress, as you well know. He'll have his good games and games were he is completely invisible.

And before you whinge about negativity, I've been on the Cox bandwagon since before he played a VFL game.

I thought Cox was great today. But just a word of caution,he was up against a very weak Essendon defence today. He just might be found out against West Coast next week, and everyone will be calling for his head and saying he's a dud.

Great 1st game, well done to the big fella!

I just wish i'd put 10 bucks on him for 1st goal :(

What was also really encouraging was the way he tapped a couple of centre bounces down our mids' throats. We haven't seen that enough yet from Grundy and Witts.
And that outstretched juggling mark in our forward 50 which led to a goal was awesome, the kind of thing that can strike fear into opposition defences.

Keep it up Mason.
