Masten Under the Microscope

Just watched the first derby game . Saw Masten try to do the Dustin Martin fend off . Is there anyone with shorter weaker arms in the league. Why does he try to burst through with no pace . Must be the weakest and easiest to tackle in the league . Why doesnt he learn to quick handpass , or dodge weave because he is just a human turnover .
Couldnt have summed it up any better myself.

I've been banging on about this for years. When Masten senses a tackle coming he goes like a clam and tucks his arms in bracing for contact. There are only 3 possible outcomes, none of which are directly benficial to the Eagles; 1) he gets caught holding the ball 2) there's a ball up or 3) he spills the ball in the tackle.
Remember the Derby a few years ago when Sandilands chased down and tackled Maston twice? A midget who cant side step a road train??

You don't need a microscope to see where Masten sits, he is a turn over merchant who goes missing pretty much for 3 quarters but by gee he can run and train the house down ! this spud needs to be moved on ffs and soon.

I can see why some people dislike Masten's game but if there is one thing he's not, its a turnover merchant.

its a never ending arguement. He has been one of our best kicks in the last few years. I remember JK saying that masto was one of the guys he liked receiving the footy from. Only if he had a tad more pace or could win more of his own ball and stand up in tackles.

Marsden is many things, but a turnover merchant he is not.

Unless you're talking about him soiling his undergarments with a panicked handball to absolutely nobody when he's under pressure, or getting thrown off the ball and ragdolled with his lack of strength. That kind of turnover.

By foot he is quite exceptional.

Masten is the leading Afl Player for caught holding the ball . Free kick . That is a turnover every day of the week . He will be Hailed as the caught holding the ball man the Anti Dustin Martin . he is like a feather with static electricity to the opposition . he has never ever got his arms free to hand pass off he is the Anti Bulldog player . His spaghetti arms are always pinned .He is probably in the " how not to " highlight reel at the Bulldogs .

Oh come on, he is certainly not among the top mids in the comp but as far as west coast is concerned he adds pace and endurance. His kicking is fine except when under pressure but is better than Priddis by a mile and in fact I would much rather a WCE team without Priddis than one without Masten as then we would lose the little pace and gut running we have. I would also add that Gaff is not much better if at all when talking about disposals and efficiency. The fact is that Shuey excepted we have no real class mids at the moment and Masten is certainly not the worst of them.

Gaff>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Masten. Gaff had a shit year in terms of his disposal but he regained his best form towards the end of the year. What sets gaff apart from Masten in terms of kicking is decision making. Gaff knows his limitations and rarely goes for the really high risk high reward passes. Masto does and he does get it a wrong a lot of the time and hence gets the turnover merchant tag.

Masten is almost expendable and should almost be being pushed out of the 22 this year.

Masten is small, weak, only averages 22 disposals, kicked four goals all year, has no leadership, and goes missing under any kind of heat. He has intermittent good games, but should be starting on the bench. He's not winning us any pressure games any time soon.

Hutchings is better than Masten.

But he is such a good outside runner he has taken 1 bounce in 4 years.

There's actually a surprising number of good highlights in that real.

He was much faster in his younger years. And most of those snags he kicked would have been in 2012 which was easily his best season.

Still want him completely out of the team. Everyone knows his kicking is his strength, but his overall game and link up is overrated and i think he can be easily replaced for someone with more strings to their bow.

Masten is exactly like Selwood . Does the drills reads the play well runs to the spots a player is needed then fails to execute the next step . Both were deers in the headlights . If Masten could master a quick release before holding the ball becomes his go his status in the game could soar . Maybe the spread to defend has us too wide for support and there isnt numbers at the contest to inspire him to quick release once we do have the ball . The thing is he should have this flaw in his game sorted by now .

Yep people call him an outside runner yet he provides no run and carry, is of average pace, has a very low amount of i50s and is no real goal threat.

He gets this nebulous role of 'linkman' which cannot seem to be measured by any statistic nor doable by any other player. Now nice.

If we are going to be any chance of going deep in the coming years he needs to be depth.
