Masten

Playing injured. IMO should be given a month off so he can be 100 percent. Its pointless playing and only giving him 50% gametime

Did I hear right during Freo v Bris in the last qtr? Palmer with 27% effective disposal:eek:

Quite happy with how Masten is tracking. Passionate, tackling machine and pinpoint passing, especially handballs are a delight. I'll say it again, reminds me so much of Black & Kemp.

Watching Palmer on the weekend, I feel that there is not a lot of upside left of Palmer i.e. he is at his peak right now. Whereas with Masten, there is tremendous upside to come.

Nah you heard right.

He had 30 possies but like 8 hit the target.

Kicked a nice goal on 3 quarter time though, and will be a star.

Masten and Palmer will be very good AFL footballers. Both have a strong desire to work hard and are good leaders. Both have very good tanks and enougfh speed to be dangerous.

Chris is a lot smaller and will benefit from a few years of AFL weights. Rhys will develop into a very strong player with a naturally bigger body.

Top thread.
  • He has played like 8 games.
  • He did not have a proper preseason due to injury.
  • He was injured for the last half of last year.
  • He appears to be carrying a mild injury now which hampers his movement and kicking, which pretty much are his key assets.
  • He just turned 19.
  • Predraft, he was always expected to develop in 2-4 years and not be an instant replacement for Judd/Cousins.
  • It is half way through his first season.
Talking about jumping the gun!!

Man this annoys me, if he's injured, he hasn't trained in a month and he's a first year player.... don't play him! It will affect his development.

He was having such a good year too...

Another thing people fail to note is that... good inside mids are much harder to find than outside mids. Masten is an inside mid with exceptional clearance skills... and, as other have said, he needs to spend some time in the gym over the next 3/4 preseasons before he will be able to play the role he was drafted for.

With the results so far im very happy we drafted Masten. Additionally the draft fell perfectly for us with Ebert at 13. If we drafted Palmer we would still be after an extractor.... I rather like the position we are in.

Apparently freo rated rhys palmer number 1 in that draft. The other clubs didn't expect him to have that much improvement, hence why he slipped to 7. That would explain while he is playing good footy now. Where do you put your faith? Palmer's disposal aint that good and given how much you can get hurt on turnovers, is that what you really want?

Masten needs to get bigger so he can break tackles. He will be a gun in a few years time.

Sorry I disagree as Palmer can also play inside. In fact i'm very certain that the Dockers do a lot of their drills with Sandilands and Palmer as a main receiver at the contests.

Palmer's kicking is also better than he is showing at the moment. I would suggest that at the momnet his young body is getting sore and he is doing senior player distances and the fatigue and soreness is affecting his kicking.

He along with Masten cxan play inside and out, they both are very good kicks and they both have very good tanks.

Palmer does play on the ball, but roving taps is not the same as in and under clearance work. Palmer is much more a Ben Cousins type than a Daniel Kerr, though not nearly as good.;)

Palmer would be wasted playing an in and under role like Kerr, Black, Mitchell etc. I don't know his game well enough to say that he wouldn't be able to do it, but his biggest assets are pace, endurance and his left foot, so a role where he is able to hit contested situations on the run and carry the ball away is where he looks best suited.

Yah Palmer is an outside reciever but with poor kicking skills. Would Rich be a similar player but with Hodge like kicking skills?

Yeah as I remember correctly Kerr was one of the few positives for us in that year as I remember no Eagles made the AA team.

The AFL wanted the Saints to win something so they gave the award to the shit.

You guys have poor memories, Masten's first season is in fact eerily similar to Kerr's. Very similiar impact in there first season.
