The 'keepings off' game against Adelaide while coach of Richmond comes to mind as well. For all the shit he cops for the 'list manager' gig he really was a very good match day coach ol' Plough.

I was at that game - it was strange because the Adelaide players didn't know what to do ... They wanted to play their zone and never man-ned up ... was infuriating as a Crows supporter.

When they eventually figured it out it was a few minutes too late.

I remember the train trip home and the Tige's supporters being absolutely stoked, even though they all admitted it was probably the worst game of football any of them had seen :)

Here's a master stroke

More like a vinegar stroke.

John Kennedy moves Peter Hudson to CHF and Bob Keddie to FF in the 1971 GF. Keddie kicks four goals in the last quarter and Hawthorn turn a 3/4 time 20 point deficit into a 7 point premiership win.

Jarman to full forward in the last quarter of the 97 Grand Final.

Inexplicably Stan Alves leaves a lumbering Shanahan on Jarman which was a total miss match. Cheers Stan.

Considering he'd done it the week before, I'd say it was no surprise in the Grand Final.

Lyon has from memory:
  • Gilbert forward in the 2010 drawn gf it added a new dimension to our forward line and made us more attacking
  • Sending Jason Blake into the ruck v Hawthorn in 2008 after half time, Blake kicked 3 goals and was 2nd best on ground (No Brownlow votes surprisingly)
  • In that same game McQulater to Mitchell was also a big influence.
  • Making a forward line with Milne being the key forward work effectively.

Bartel to Hayes in 2009 was a winning move by Bomber as Hayes was playing like a man possessed in that first quarter.
Bartel to CHF in 2011 worked a treat for chris scott.

Lyon is the master of the "why'd he do that? why is it working? what the????"

I like his move with Sandi this year, throw him in as our floating defender when he's not rucking. How many other coaches would do that with their rucks? And because of it, the guy that last year dropped more sitters than Natanui, is now top contested mark in the league for 2014.

No offence to Rossy boy, but he didn't invent resting a ruck in defence. Nearly every team does this, especially when the opposition has a power forward.

Bomber Thompson's 2009 GF Qtr Time move is easy the most memorable in recebnt times.
Something had to be done but was still gutsy to not fartarse about with a lesser player...but to sacrifice your reigning Brownlow Medallist midfielder to play a tagging role was a flag winning move.
Hayes was totally out of control and gave poor Joel Corey an absolute bath.
After qtr time neither Hayes nor Bartel had much influence and drew even on the ground. Hayes probably the better game overall but took a guy at the top of his game to shut down the problem.
Actually looking back those 2 on each other..Hayes/Bartel was possibly the best one on one midfielder matchups we've seen for 10yrs...that Rnd 14 game they were also equal BOG from memory.
Massive GF coaching moment between two damn good teams...Thompson probably still gets shouted beers to talk about it.
