No but Xavier knocked back 2 years at Sydney to chase money on the open market only to end up playing Sydney Premier League footy because nobody wanted him.
It's even funnier than that. His reason for rejecting the contract was because he wanted to go back to Melbourne. When no Melbourne based team wanted him, he ends up signing for Sydney Uni in the NEAFL. Go figure.

Only thing I can think of - has a bottom club offered him $800k for next year to walk him to the PSD, with the following years going to be on much less?
Wouldn't it be the opposite? A team with no PSD leverage (IE higher up the order) wants him for no draft collateral, so hope that a top heavy contract will be enough for him to slide past the lower teams.

I suppose, but I'd be surprised if any top half side has $800k lying around next year for Owies

"Carlton forward Matt Owies is at risk of being out of the AFL completely in 2025 due to clubs’ unwillingness to stump up a significant salary for the small forward.Owies, who booted 33 goals in 23 games this season, is out of contract and exploring options at rival clubs, with the Blues prepared to lose him.The 27 year old has met with multiple clubs, including West Coast and Gold Coast, as the trade period begins to heat up.But some clubs have suggested he could struggle to find a home this off-season, with Owies’ asking price believed to be around $700,000-800,000 per season on a multi-year deal."

Matt Owies’ manager Matt Bain has scoffed at a report that his client was demanding $800,000 per year to continue his AFL career.
The small forward is yet to be offered a contract at Carlton despite kicking 33 goals this season, and Bain told this masthead that Owies was “looking for opportunities to continue his career, rather than a pay rise”.

$800k for 2 years deal?

Would be closer to the mark.
