Speculation Matt Rowell [OOC 2025]

It'd be pretty bad for footy if Rowell left GC for Geelong
Bad for who?

Rowell, whilst being very good, hasn't exactly turned into the player he promised to be, although the current free ride he enjoys from the umps will probably extend to when/if he's at Geelong.

Those early injuries really seemed to stunt his growth.

Having another top 5 player for one of the worst teams in the comp join a perennial powerhouse is the antithesis of equalisation. Rowell may not be an absolute superstar but has 200 games ahead of him which GC can Ill afford to lose.

He did along with Ben Jepson who will probably be rookie listed by gc. I doubt Collingwood have the trade capital or the cap space though but I could be wrong.

What was the relationship like between Hardwick and Geelong? I don't think it was very good?

Hardwick has the cnut in him and I can't imagine he would want to deal with Geelong.

Cap space is not a problem when you look at the players that will retire?

Trade Capital might depend if any of our players want to leave for greater opportunity. Wait and see on that one.

Unlucky you don't have the footy show anymore to give tv contracts to players that can't string a sentence together

Which players would that be? Bill Brownlees? Doug Hawkins?

I would say Cam Mooney, Ling are pretty fortunate to have roles in the media.

2024 stats per game

8 tackles a game - no 1 in the AFL
14 contested possessions a game- 3rd in the AFL
7 clearances a game - 6th in the AFL

he was a beast in 2024.

Yes but he's very inside.

Also gets an absolute eternity to throw the ball out when tackled.

Not saying he's a bad player by any means, but he's quite one dimensional.

he's an inside mid who tackles and get clearances. any team would take him in a heartbeat and he'd be in their best 5 players.

Hes coverable with the talent GC have, but its just pushing any chance they have of success back another couple of years while another kid develops.

They need Rowell

Yes and no. They have enough guys to step into his role in a powerful midfield it's more whether you think him going will impact their retention of Victorians generally (which is a separate issue).

Considering that Suns did not play finals yet and lost only Rankine in the last five years, Suns are not in bad shape regarding retention.

Saying that it goes in cycles with Suns. Players will not stay forever without success unless you are Swallow, Miller. After 5-6 years without success some players will leave as was the case with May, Lynch, Prestia.

We are approaching that cycle again. Winning, playing finals should break the cycle. Pretty important 2 seasons are coming up.

Play finals and Suns have a good chance to retain everybody they want and also attract top talent like Lions. Gold Coast is a great place to work.

Fail and we could see players turnover again. Good thing for Suns and Dimma is that academy is starting to produce quality local talent. But that talent is still too young.

Personally, I think 2026 is the year Suns should start seriously challenging for finals. If all goes well possibly in 2025. But profile is still young and inexperienced. Still some mental hurdles to jump. There are 14-15 teams with realistic ambitions to make finals. Need some luck with injuries, win close games.

As for Rowell, I was a bit puzzled that Dimma did not rotate more players inside despite proclaiming it to contrary. It would be great if Rowell could play other role(s) (20-30%) rather than punishing his body exclusively inside.

I believe Flanders would do a great job inside. Graham was unbelievable in his first year. Not mentioning Humphrey who had a down year and is looking for more minutes in the middle. Davies big body would handy inside too.

Up to Dimma to show he is a great coach. He for sure does not have the same calibre of assistant coaches he had with Tigers.

Intriguing season coming up. I can't wait.

Technical a dirt carpet
Gold 😂
But reckon the lifestyle and the options to get away down the coast etc. are a great drawcard and Stanley and Cameron have got some great set-ups at their properties, definitely won’t hurt the Cats’ chances of convincing blokes 👍

Bring the boy home! It's a human rights issue!

Late first and change.
He would help any side, but you’d have to say that his inside grunt would be as good a fit as you’d find from the Cats’ perspective.

issue is what that role would be.

flanders, anderson and miller can all play elsewhere to varying degrees of success. rowell doesnt have anymore strings to his bow.
