Toast Matthew Lloyd you are a legend

Absolute champion player, and a champion bloke.

Played with him briefly at Western Jets all those years ago, did a week of rehab training with Lloydy, just myself and him. Chewed the fat, nicest bloke ever.

A few years later, strolling through a packed Crown Casino with my mates, they noticed a group of Essendon boys playing Two Up about 20 metres away, and told me to look over. Lloydy just happened to look over my way, caught my eye and yelled out "How are ya Chris?" giving the thumbs up .He could've just looked right through me, him being an AFL player and me being a scrub. Didn't even expect him to remember me, but said hello anyway.

Always remember that, and will always appreciate it as I worshipped him as a footballer already at that stage, and he was probably 19 years old.

Couldn't have had a better career. Farewell to a champion.

I may have been a silly teenage girl with a crush at the time, but he's been my favourite player for a long time now - thanks for everything Lloydy, you are a champion :) Wish we could see him play 300 games, and even just a farewell match, but either way it'd never be easy to say goodbye to such a legend. :(

I'm shattered.
I was 12 when Lloyd first put on the mighty red & black jumper,
and it was such an honour to watch a champion do so much for our club.
I would of loved to see him kick the mighty 1000th goal or to see him play 300 games but the decisions is his and I wish him all the very best for what the future holds for him and his family. I certainly do hope the next child is a boy!
You'll be missed out there Lloydy! :thumbsu:

I don't think I need to add anything that hasn't already been said. Lloydy is a champion. I've also been lucky enough to speak to him a couple of times, and not only is he a top footballer, he's also a top bloke.

Congrats on a brilliant career. I still remember the day when Lloydy played his first game. I also remember a few years back I made a bet with one of my Swans fan mates that he'd beat Plugger's goal record before he retired ... :(

While I'm disappointed that he didn't play on for the chance to get his 1000th goal, I must congratulate Lloyd for his achievements and thank him for what he has done for the club.

I think if you follow football and love the game you would have to say matthew lloyd was a champion of the game and one of the games gentlemen. It is just so sad to see him on television so gutted.....to the essendon people who love him i just cant imagine how you feel, i know its how every richmond person will feel when richo leaves :(

Congratulations matthew on a great career and i wish you and your lovely family the best.

His 13 goals against Sydney at the G stand out the most for me. That mark he took over three Sydney players (I'm sure it was the same game) - the image is still etched in my mind.

I'll never forget Bewick lining up from 45 degrees about 40 meters out, and Lloyd leading like he was going to burst. He was on 13 and would have been going for the club record. Boris just had a chuckle and slotted it.

What a star. We may not live to see another like him in the red and black.

Thanks Lloydy.

What a grab.

Sad news :(

It will be a long time before an issue comparable with '...who will go to Lloyd?' brings a smile to my heart.

Goal of the year, brilliant.

The bump on Chris Judd, leadership.

The vice grip hands.
There will be an ironic twist on ANZAC Days when we remember how you sacrificed your game to put us into the finals as your last knock before retirement.

Good luck Lloydy. You're a champion. You'll be missed.

if he hadnt missed the entire season of 2006 he would have fared close to 300 games

true champion of the bombers team

not to mention a 1000 goals,
yep

might have played more up the ground to preserve his body strength and twilight of his career

he was great, shame lucas came around the same time lol
didnt get the accolades he deserved playing next to lloyd
its weird seeing ess without lloyd and hird and even sheedy after so many years

Strange bump...but anyways.

I can only take comfort in the fact the Fletch is there to remind me of the bombers I grew up with. When he retires, I think a part of my childhood will be lost forever and hence... a part of me will die.

Too melodramatic? :p True though.

How good is he on SEN Wednesdays mornings also.

Great insight and understanding of the game, along with a wit I never knew he had.:thumbsu:
