He can start regaining some trust, by putting his hand up, accepting they got some things wrong with their approach to the first few weeks of the season and simply look to get back to basics, with an emphasis on what was working last year. Actually using the opportunity that the unfortunate injuries have presented to bring in some new players, free up/refresh the squad.

May not see wins straight away, but at least put on some watchable football and utilise the players talents, rather than whatever the other night was :(

Any goodwill that he had is likely to have been eroded. I thought he had made some tentative progress last season, but this has been a huge step backwards to put it mildly.

If he were to be shown the door tomorrow, yes there will be some embarrassment, particularly when the VFL media have their go, but it can be rationalised - the extension was a mistake, the expected progress has not been made, breakdown in relationships etc etc. The alternative, clinging on for the sake of keeping face would be far more damaging.

That’s why I genuinely think if the year pans out to be a complete disaster, he’ll be shown the door. The cost otherwise would be too much, if crowds drop off, corporate and sponsor unease and the general feel from the membership and broader supporter base. It’s been a patient build, but everyone has their limit, even Dot and Mavis and co at the Bowls Club, they surely would be wanting to see their boys start winning again 😀

The young players - if there is any hint of dissatisfaction or questioning of their futures etc, then action is a must. You cannot afford to let them slip, the platform is there, the list isn’t perfect of course, but there is too much for a new coach to work with for it to be thrown away.

It would be better to pull the pin now rather then ride it out until mid year

Good luck with that... he's already blamed the players. After week 3! This is screwed. Full stop.

I was going to say this but Robert Shaw was a cancer on the culture as well and basically picked fights with every senior player. I remember he chased Modra around the streets of Adelaide in a car chase one day. He was truly a disgraceful coach. I would say Nicks is more like Ayres. He never did much either. My ranking would have Nicks, Ayres and Shaw bottom 3 though.
When you get to the point of coaches going out of their way to ruin players it's like a cancer... Nicks is literally going out of his way to destroy any attacking flair out of young players. First it was Jones and Fog, then Berry, Harry and RT. Now Peds. These ain't senior players he is going out of his way to screw up, it's our juniors with 1-3 years on the clock! This isn't a rebuild, it's a complete destruction!

Selection is the story here. Due to no depth he has injury issues for the first time in a while and he will have no choice but to bring in fresh players out of his comfort zone.
Selection is only part of the story here.. yeah we all wish we had Murray back from the start. It's a long term injury. Get over it, like every other team, we should have some depth to cover one player until he's fit. But we don't do it.. well enough. That's coaching and preparation, and a lack of vision both our coaching group and board both seem to have.

Please excuse the caps, but...

WHY, WHY, WHY DID WE RE-SIGN THIS CLUELESS arseh*le AFTER ROUND ONE?

Really, what was so inspiring to do that? It's not development of youngsters. It's not results. I'm at a loss.

Because if we had a shit start (like we are having) the gutless administration didn’t want the narrative and noise of when he was going to be signed. Think the belief is the not signing distracts the players.

So let’s think that thru - so not winning games distracts the players by the media saying wtf is going on at Adelaide or not signing Nicks and the media says when is Nicks getting resigned. I’d rather have the former rather than later coz long term you ain’t stuck with a dud.

And I know what stops the noise, winning ****ing games!

Now it made me think last year we couldn’t beat any of the sides ranked 7-12 and in most cases other than GWS at Adelaide we weren’t going to win any of those games.

Now in away games of the top 6 - we were 4 goals down against Melbourne twice during the game and with Collingwood we were down 6 goals. What changed in both those games? We took the opposition on and played with flair and risk.

Now lets remember the game against Sydney, again we were down 5 goals at 3/4 time, played like crap but again nearly stole it. Again we decided to take risks.

Think this year, we have become risk adverse and that is on the coach.

We won't drop Smith, it's just not in our DNA.
That's a shame.
But maybe Smithy watched Jordan Clarke and learnt what half back done right looks like.

I suspect the injuries save him but I'm very keen to see him dropped for either Curtin or Edwards.

I’m still dumbfounded when we decided to extend his contract.

So we do it after a close loss but really never in it until the last quarter.

As all have said, his contract extension had been done and dusted in the preseason. If it had already been decided it needed to be done during the preseason. And this talk about putting undue pressure on him to perform if it hadn’t been announced, well, welcome to the big league fella. You want finals then suck it up.

Now the administration just looks stupid. But hey, they have been down that road before.

Very glad we have numerous primetime games this year. Nicks cant hide like previous years and is gonna be exposed big time. It will fastrack his removal.

A losing dna. You're probably right, smith and sloane will be wheeled out ala Scott Thompson until it gets to the point of ridiculousness when they must be dropped.

You don't think Nicks will see his mistake and change or you think he will continue to double down?
You think Nicks will change?

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha wait wait hahahahahahahahahahaha

Is the 6 month maximum payout still a thing? If so, then the extra 2 year extension makes no difference, right?
No and it never applied to us anyway.

While not at the level coaches would ideally like, the landscape has also adjusted to allow them to negotiate for more security in new contracts after the AFL expanded its guidelines around payout clauses as part of wider soft-cap changes late last year.

While previous guidelines stipulated six-month payouts for coaches at clubs who were reliant on AFL funding, coaches can now negotiate 12-month payout clauses or longer. Similar clauses for assistant and development coaches have been expanded from one-to-three months up to six months.
I'd best case scenario for us is if we did (we won't) turf him at the end of the year he's getting a minimum of 12 months payout.

Wasn't it shown that Shaw at least had an eye for talent?

Might be making up history here, but I thought he'd drafted or traded well.

Because we only announced after round 1; it had already been done earlier
Probably agreed to after the final game last year.

Wouldn't surprise me if he had a trigger for an extension if he made Finals in either of the last two years.

Club honoured it in good faith after Hoskin funked up.

He did expose players who became big parts of our 97/98 flags.

McLeod, Edwards, Ellen, Pittman, Vardy, brought in Darren Jarman, Kym Koster, Troy Bond and Peter Caven in his years too.

The thing that will be most telling is the inevitable fall out WHEN we sack Nicks, not 'if'.

Imagine being a prospective coach and seeing the circus that we will no doubt deliver when it happens even when we have re-signed him :drunk:

We will be eons in the wilderness....

More fundamentally, we actually need a full total football department cleanout. Kelly is an amateur, our development coaches in the SANFL all need to be reviewed, Ogilvie and Reid to go.

We have so many frauds getting paid big bucks its actually frightening.
