Has Nicks taken any responsibility for our 0-3 start?

I listened to his presser last night, there was plenty about players being out of form, making poor decisions and not sticking to game plans, but not anything about how the coaching staff can improve or what they're learning from the losses.

If Nicks is patting himself on the back and thinking it's all the players fault then we're going nowhere.

The selection committee need to give all our top end talent a decent go... & start being more ruthless in selection where a player has had several poor games.

Imo, finals already a lost cause.

Ps. Stop playing injured or underdone players too!

Well if Nicks is not sacked this week we will see what he is made of. Will he just stick to the status quo, blame mchenry and sholl for all his troubles and bring in more trusted players? or will he act like a coach for once and swing the axe, make 5 changes and give some kids a debut while putting games into Nank, Cook and Gollant.

He never admits losing it at selection, or making a tactical error, its 100% the players fault.

It’s not a mistake if you believe it

Who were they?

Most I recall wanted us to wait.
Yep. For a long time I wanted the Sam Wyche (when he took the 1988 Cincinnati Bengals to the Superbowl that season) year when he joked he was on a "seven day renewable contract". He delivered. Nicks has delivered us... shat. We dug ourselves a massive payout for an under performing coach... again. Sanderson, rinse and rewind.

Please excuse the caps, but...

WHY, WHY, WHY DID WE RE-SIGN THIS CLUELESS arseh*le AFTER ROUND ONE?

Really, what was so inspiring to do that? It's not development of youngsters. It's not results. I'm at a loss.

That's better, man. Embrace the melt thread. We're playing the worst football we've ever seen, Utopia is an afterthought

I wasn't expecting that to get though the filter. I guess arseh*le is OK in lower case

Sadly we are a feeder club for interstate clubs & our recruitment/drafting has been pathetic for years
At least we’ll stop being a feeder

I'd take that as a no. Pretty damning stuff in my book...

I joked to a mate this week how long it would take for him to blame the players... turns out it was less than an hour.

He's gonna get a shock when he's sacked if he thinks it's all the players.

Players are one thing... results are another. If we get Port/Tarps like-levels of <30K "customers" each week showing up, he shouldn't be that surprised. If we keep this sub-standard of play, he should see it coming... and be happy he will get a payout for doing **** all during his time off while we wear it.

Being the coach of the crows was the only head coaching gig he was ever gonna get. I hope we have performance clauses in his deal to sack him this year with minimal cost to the club.

He is a Robert Shaw 2.0. Equally the worst coach of the Crows I have ever seen, and if we have to pay him out to get rid of him, so be it. I still can't believe we gave him an extension after that shitshow against the Suns, but that's what we do. We are yet again going to wear the effect of our management's incompetence in wearing this SNAFU.

So of all the posters who were happy to re-sign him early, are you still of the same opinion?

Yeah look if youre asking honestly i’ll admit I was wrong. I was pro signing him before the season even started based off the exciting, marketable style we were playing last year with one of the youngest teams, i liked he was looking for innovative methods to bring to his coaching, seemed open to learning, thought the future looked bright and he was methodically building something special, i bought some new merch etc. Just felt like another good news story to come at a great time ahead of a serious finals push season, better game times, exciting players etc. was super pumped heading into this year.

My mind has now changed. I wouldnt be so adamant if we were playing the same style of footy as last year and getting defeated but this is borderline unwatchable. I’d still be signing him if things hadnt so drastically changed. Im not sure im even that keen to see us win in this way. Especially if we arent willing to trial any of the new guys, i just hope they arent losing the fun. We arent finished the rebuild yet but i thought we were on the right path till now. Only hope he can flick a switch back in time next week and save face, play some debuts, get a win and then he publically admits mistake and the first 3 rounds become a write off.

I said 12months ago we would extend him and then proceed to sack him with a big payout. The afc are so predictable if anything. I hope we put some clauses in but i have no faith in those idiots driving the club into a ditch.

more fun facts with cousin Eddie

Nicks development or lack there of.

Since he took over he played
2020 - 38 players
2021 - 37 players

Since the end of 2021 here are the list of new crows who have put on a jersey
1. Josh Rachele - drafted 2021
2. Izak Rankine - trade
3. Jake Soligo - ready to play drafted 2021
4. Patrick Parnell - ready to play drafted mid 2022
5. Mark Keane - drafted 2023
6. James Borlase - drafted 2021
7. Max Michalanney - drafted 2022
8. Luke Nankervis - drafted 2021
9. Chris Burgess - Trade
10. Jordan Dawson - Trade

8 of those players played on the weekend. Which means 14 plus the sub all were either basically mature age by the time Nicks got to them, or they were previous drafts.

Players who played on the weekend drafted and played before 2020
Taylor Walker
Brodie Smith
Rory Laird
Matt Crouch
Wayne Milera
Reilly O'Brien
Chayce Jones
Lachlan Murphy
Darcy Fogarty

Add
Jordan Dawson - Trade
Izake Rankine - Trade
Chris Burgess - Trade

This leaves the following players who debuted under Nicks
McHenry, Sholl, Keane, Borlase, Rachele, Soligo, Hinge, Michalanney, Pedlar, Keays, Worrell

Players on the list since under 20 games drafted before 2022
Keiran Stachan - Drafted 2018 5 games
Lachlan Gollant - drafted 2019 13 Games
Brayden Cook - drafted 2020 12 Games
Luke Nankervis - drafted 2021 4 games
James Borlase - drafted 2021 6 games
Zac Taylor - drafted 2021 0 games

So my question to the group is has Nicks actually done a rebuild or has he lived off the fruits of drafts, trades and mature age players that ultimately had nothing to do with his influence?

I think this list assessment proves Nicks is a fraud. We may as well have just kept Pyke. He is flogging all the same mature age players, he has brought in only ready made drafted players aside from a few exceptions. What the hell has he actually done besides culture?

I was going to say this but Robert Shaw was a cancer on the culture as well and basically picked fights with every senior player. I remember he chased Modra around the streets of Adelaide in a car chase one day. He was truly a disgraceful coach. I would say Nicks is more like Ayres. He never did much either. My ranking would have Nicks, Ayres and Shaw bottom 3 though.

I think I'd be less pissed off if they just pulled the pin on Nicks now. Yes the admin will get laughed at and it means less of a budget for coaching appointments. At least we'd be on the path to doing anything that isn't this. I would take complete uncertainty over whatever the **** we're watching right now.

Nicks is living off pre 2020 mature age players, trades and ready made draftees. The clubs list is in my opinion, as big of a mess as its ever been. We need a coach to walk in tomorrow who has the gumption to make some serious changes

Any goodwill that he had is likely to have been eroded. I thought he had made some tentative progress last season, but this has been a huge step backwards to put it mildly.

If he were to be shown the door tomorrow, yes there will be some embarrassment, particularly when the VFL media have their go, but it can be rationalised - the extension was a mistake, the expected progress has not been made, breakdown in relationships etc etc. The alternative, clinging on for the sake of keeping face would be far more damaging.

That’s why I genuinely think if the year pans out to be a complete disaster, he’ll be shown the door. The cost otherwise would be too much, if crowds drop off, corporate and sponsor unease and the general feel from the membership and broader supporter base. It’s been a patient build, but everyone has their limit, even Dot and Mavis and co at the Bowls Club, they surely would be wanting to see their boys start winning again 😀

The young players - if there is any hint of dissatisfaction or questioning of their futures etc, then action is a must. You cannot afford to let them slip, the platform is there, the list isn’t perfect of course, but there is too much for a new coach to work with for it to be thrown away.
