I can't remember every contest off the top of my head at the moment, he seemed to get burnt by Menzel early and Motlop late.. whenever he was near the footy he really didn't go hard at it, a few times players easily got around him when he should of put on a lot more defensive pressure.

Anyway, no point going into too much detail at this point as he is coming off an ACL, entirely possible he is a completely different player next year.
Kappa sorry if I seem to be going on and on and maybe you are right to have a dig at me but I think your last paragraph says it all let's see, if he is with us next year he progresses as we all hope he will -ok?

I think the guy is super talented but he does seem to lack intensity. You could argue the same with Pendlebury early on in his career. Given that he has no real preseason and may need more confidence in his body I would be giving him the benefit of doubt. I think he has the potential to be an A grader whether he reaches that level is up to him.
Disagree regarding Pendles. While Pendles is not quick, his motor is always going.

You don't see that from Scharenberg (thus far in his very early AFL career) at all.

I made the same observation while he was a sub. I didn't know if he just crack the shits because he was on the bench for 3 quarters or whether he is just that way. At the moment, i'm leaning towards the latter. Its a bit worrying imo.

Hine rarely makes mistakes in the top end of the draft. Once we get his good mate Aish in they'll both kick ass. At this stage I wouldn't be worried. He's had zero preseasons and a very interrupted start to his career and we know that the step up from VFL to AFL is big. He is silk guys, be patient.

He definitely reads the play well but his body language sucks....but then again so did Swans at the same stage. So lets just wait and see...

Yes, clearly I need to grow up because I gave an opinion on a footballer you didn't agree with.

The negativity police out in force again
Starting to sink in finally. Acceptance can be such a comfort.
Perhaps you can make a citizens arrest...or just hand yourself in.

Im not sure about the reliance on body language.
He comes across as a quiet thoughtful guy, who has a reserved intensity if anything.
After beating bone spurs and feet issues plus knee injury recovery hes gone ok, and been given a taste.
A full pre season and general development and the xperience and he'll be one of our topliners im sure.

Not sure desperation is his big thing. Wasn't his forte at U18 level his reading of the play, intercept marking and coolness under pressure?
You'd like to see some manic desperation, or even a bit more than he's showing presently I guess, but his strengths are elsewhere.

I think your last point is quite pertinent, however I think you're being harsh critiquing any player that get's burned off by Motlop let alone a guy so early into his career. Motlop has serious wheels so there was no shame in that, IMO.

Scharenberg is quite clearly playing with mental demons, he is playing soft footy atm. He is very tentative when switching directions or having to contest a loose ball or scrimage. Deffinitely not going 100% at it.

Hopefully he is a different player next season after getting some confidence back in his body because right now he's a long way off the Hype.

Lots of criticism in here for a third gamer coming off 18 months of injuries...

What I saw was a kid who was able to read the play well enough to pick up 17 disposals and 9 marks, despite the fact that his fitness is clearly well below par. Every single time I saw him he was blowing hard. Whilst his intensity at the contest was lacking, likely due to a lack of confidence in his body, it seemed pretty clear to me he was still putting in the effort to try and be useful to the team as an outside receiver, and got to the right places at the right times.

Also worth noting in the comparisons to Menzel, he's got nearly a full season less experience at the top level, and whilst it has barely been 12 months since Matts injury, Menzel's knee was last injured in April 2013. He has had literally, more than double the recovery time that Berg has had, which unsurprisingly has translated to better fitness, and a higher confidence level in his body.

Looking forward to seeing Berg play next year with a full preseason under his belt and increased confidence in his body's ability to handle AFL.

which almost makes it laughable that we'd want a first round pick. TBH Shaz isn't playing with any conviction. If the roles were reversed would you give up a first rounder for him?
For the record, I much prefer that we keep him and turn him around to fulfill the potential he isn't showing right now.

And in 3 years time, even if he does want to go back, we'd be in a much better bargaining position.

This is a very sensible post but I prefer to show how much a pie supporter i am by calling for him to be traded....we need to give a clear signal to players who are considering a transfer to collingwood that we won't tolerate a sub par effort, even if you're inexperienced and returning from a long term injury.

Did you miss the rest of his game?

He is a long way off.
Did you miss the 17 possessions
Not everyone can have a game like gary ablett junior at his best every single week.
The berg was ok and sufficient, a full pre season and he will be burning it up
Top shelf

Agree. I think a lot of posters are trying to justify why it'll be okay if we lose him. His game was serviceable, had 17, took 9 marks and did some nice things.

He'll continue to cop flack though if he doesn't show more intensity. I know it's not his forte, but to not even lay one tackle is disappointing. I'm still a fan and absolutely think he'll still be a gun, but it's just underwhelming to see.

In 3 games he's shown he can find the ball on the outside at least and has composure...TICK
Doodles nicely said. Hes a tick.
Just await a fill pre season no set backs and he will start his climb to elite Magpie
(Fingers crossed same for Freeman, because besides the Sidebot, Freeman is the next best runner. And a manic ball getter)

Agree with a lot on here. He looked to lack intensity and seemed slow at times but 9 marks and 17 disposals is nothing to sneeze at for a third gamer.

I'll cut him a bit of slack as it was his first game with proper preparation. Don't forget he was a late/late in on debut and the sub in his second game.

Probably didn't up his trade value or add
dollars to his contract on that performance though.

Scharenberg performances in the few games he has played have literally shocked me. He looks as soft and disinterested as any player I have seen in an AFL game. His body language is atrocious, he doesn't break out of a jog and he tackles like a limp lettuce. I cannot believe the hype I have heard about this bloke. Possessions mean nothing. Marsh had three or four tonight and looked fantastic. I don't care what he might become-right now he is pathetic.

To me, he seems like a very intelligent footballer, economical -which can look lethargic at times, uses it very well, makes smart disposal decisions, does not seem to get flustered under pressure and manages to find time and space. Lacks a bit of pace, can look a bit laconic and picks his moments when to go in and when to hang off. Everyone would like to see a bit more desperation but, I think his body language and movement are always going to suggest that laconic physical aspect, mobility and pace are the main queries coming off his injuries and we will learn more next season. I remember Swan copped a lot of similar stuff early days in his career, about lacking intensity and not going hard enough, mostly it was just his gait, few would say the same thing now.
