Mattner Dropped

So Neil Craig must be a complete dud then playing Mattner back there after seeing him carving them up down the wing when we were flying.

Drummonds right, must be that Craig has suddenly forgotten how he got all of his success last two years , rather than Craig being forced to rob Peter to pay Paul the whole year to cover the holes in our side game after game from outs to key big men since the finals last year due to injuries.

Mattners being played out of position because our whole make up is patchwork at the moment.
Have we had even one game where we havent had forced outgoings and key big men missing?

TRYING Mattner down back to cover a missing tall, fair enough. But persisting with him down there when he clearly struggles is ridiculous. And it's turned a guy who was recently considered one of the best wingers in the league into a player who can't get a game.

If I was Mattner, I'd be looking to move on - his career shouldn't be ruined by being played in a position which he isn't capable of.

**** me, if we can fit players like Perrie into the side week in, week out, then surely Mattner is worthy of playing in the team, in the position he excels at.

Craigy is a fantastic coach - if he could lose his extreme stubborn streak, he'd be even better.

As I predicted earlier in the week. Certainly no surprise.

NC obviously prefers others to him on the wings and if he's going to play in the backline then there's no point having him there. Stevens to play as the third tall, which is his best role within the side.

He's Sir Martin Brainfade. Has zero confidence and looks like he's been bonging on before games.

Prime trade material.

Of course he's now TERRIBLE trade material, because Neil Craig has spent the whole year highlighting his failings and ruining his strengths, so that no team would offer anywhere near value for him.

Not sure why it is Neil Craig is so incredibly stubborn and refuses to play Mattner where he should be played, on the wing. It is said on BF week in and week out and is blindingly obvious to the supporters where Mattner should be played, so I can;t understand what he is doing.

Haven't been at all happy with the team selections this week. I don't particuarly care what how late Ben Hudson was out, he is our number one ruckman, going into and absolutely crucial game for the club and he is suspended. It is incredible. Collingwood's loss tonight has helped our chances again, yet we don't really seem to want to win by making stupid selection decisions.

Sorry but Mattner is not an instinctive player (I don't think Doughty is either) and no he can't just play on the wing when we have other options. If he can't adapt to his role in defence then that is to his own detriment.

PS : At least once a match he will run the ball out of defence and not be aware of his opposition then get caught holding the ball because he didn't give off when he should have. Not the brightest on the team.

I'd argue that Mattner is a highly instinctive player, and that when he's asked to ignore his natural instincts, he is incapable of doing so.

And he can't play on the wing because we have other options there?

Your PS is just another reason why he shouldn't be in the backlines. As a winger, you want him getting the ball and running through lines, if he gets caught once a game, who cares?

Completely agree. He is a fantastic player on the wing and should be left there. He used to break the lines beautifully and kick long in to the forward line and it is that runh and drive the side is missing quite a lot this season.

Spot on - who cares if he has the odd brain fade, if he's having a crack and running with the ball, he's going to get caught once and again; like I said, who cares?

We're also missing his chasing and tackling pressure in the middle.

Congratulations to the coaching staff for turning an attacking effective wingman into an uncertain dithering backman.

OMG DRUMMOND LYKS NORWOOD HEEPZ!! Yes! We get it! Its getting boring! He's overtly biased to his detriment, but his posts are a lot more interesting than the rest of the bland/blind AFC supporting on this board. The second the game is on is a different matter. But on this board people can and should have different opinions, even if they are unnecessarily negative.

agreed .....guy has been crucified .......Ayres tried to turn him into a tagger and failed ......Craig tried to turn him into a defender and failed.

Stenglein came to the Crows as a Full Back and failed .....it was only by exasperated luck by Port that he was tried first on a wing then tagger where he lucked into his position as a tagger.

The AFC will just not accept what Mattners role is as a player in the AFL .....he's a wingman FFS

Mattner's a WINGMAN.

Apparently he wasn't getting enough of the ball on the wing (Reilly/Knights or Burton easily do better than Marty). He has too many brain fades to command that role. He is also not doing the team thing which is why he is being dropped (second time this year, one time last).

I am just recalling some info I had garnered from those apparently in the know. Whether it is fact or not I don't know. Apparently "they" weren't happy with the amount of ball he got and/or the brain fades once he got it.

Its bloody frustrating for me as well. He's clearly an excellent wingman, and would no doubt offer more to us this weekend that Douglas. So why isn't he playing?

And lay off Drummond, for ****s sake. He is allowed an opinion just like everyone else.

Mattner is being a scapegoat.

It's ironic that you can drop a player for poor form, when his poor form clearly comes from being played completely out of position. It's easy, and basically a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Tin, as has been said, he went from a Winger who was close to AA, and rated as half of the best wing pairing in the League, to a fringe player who is being dropped. If I was him, I'd be asking for a trade - a hell of a lot of players fail to be AFL players because they don't have the talent/ability/commitment/size/speed whatever; Mattner has what it takes, but is now a fringe player because of where he is being played.
