Roast Maxwell's big mouth

Actually, I quite admire Nick Maxwell and think he has been a good captain for Collingwood. (Maybe thats because he was a Geelong supporter as a young fella, and models his captaincy on Tom Harley). Either way, you have to take what ever is reported in the media with a huge grain of salt. The Collingwood players respect Geelong and will be out to beat us. For all his faults, Mick Malthouse is a damn good coach and has his team running at peak performance. We're in good shape but not running 100% yet, whereas Collingwood are, if ever they are to beat us - this week will be it (Night, MCG, full house with crowd support). Personally, that wont be too bad as the premiership favouritism and associated pressure will be on them. It's winning the last game of the year that counts.

We are just coasting along atm, and have 2-3 gears left in us, whereas there's no doubt they are peaking, they are just talking themselves up as they always do, let em do it, cos it just heaps more and more pressure on them

I find it interesting how there is always talk of a 'team' coasting, a 'team' peaking and the pressure associated with this or that.

I'd say you guys should be favourites going in to the game this week. Funnily enough before last game I was extremely confident we'd win, this time not so much :(

But as far as the entire team mentality goes, I don't think there's really all that much to it. I don't think that once the team of 22 walks out onto the park, they're ever thinking about what round they're playing in or how the current game affects their future mental edge on their opponents. And each individual has their own mentality, their own concerns and their own desires/goals within the game. I really doubt one particular mentality is permeates an entire playing group for 2 hours.

Definitely I would agree that a final would have players up and running through the added importance, crowd influence, adrenaline of the buildup and all that goes with it. But at round 19, I would guess that all the planning that goes into games, the importance of structures, executing your gameplan and individual performance and just winning is what's most important.

Therefore, whoever wins on the weekend is definitely the best team in the league (and will rightly sit #1 on the ladder), but even that means nothing until September.

Can't wait :D

after sat nights game the cats have some sore players.might even have a few out this week and the pies 1 extra days rest doesnt help either.

As much as I like bragging rights, I'm not too fussed if we lose on Sat. As was posted earlier in this thread the Geelong coaching staff like to keep some of their powder dry this time of year. They quietly try a few things, and are not bothered by losing matches to teams they know they will face in the finals. They have a bigger plan. Let the Pies knock themselves out Sat. We play the the long game.

I agree, it' hard not to notice how much they are building this game up, they are treating it like a mini-GF, they seem to be very confident after disposing of some shitty teams with ease, I think it's a good thing that they haven't been tested cos they will only get cockier, they are incredibly arrogant for a team that's had no success for a long time, I really hate the filth with a passion so I don't want to lose to them, but I know if we do we hopefully will turn it around finals time

Go Cats

I take the opposite view.

If Collingwood can't beat us this week with the way they are travelling, it will give Geelong a big psychological advantage going into the finals.

Geelong won't want to let this opportunity slip.

I agree, I don't want to lose this.

Who knows what the finals will be ( i think we'll play the saints) but any chance to grab a mental edge should be taken.

I'm a tad worried there are some sore bodies though.

And I hope they keep Ablett up forward and unleash his wrath in the finals.

This seems like a strange statement to me.

The only stat that the Pies won that day was the free kick count 21-20. All other stats were comprehensively won by the Cats:

Kicks 262-202
Hballs 222-159
Marks 148-84
Goals 12-6
Bhnds 14-14
Houts 29-27
Tackles 65-52

Interesting mind game attempt...

Isn't it standard promotional practices when 2 heavy weights meet for a bit of pre-match banter and rhetoric...nothing to see here

I think it's pretty obvious that Collingwood FEAR Geelong and that their last two wins against us were insignificant, where as we beat them in all the big games:thumbsu:

I can see the brown stains on Maxwell's pants:D

It’s absolutely painful listening to this douche hack trying to sound tough and smart, excruciatingly so.

Glad he was drafted by the toothless filth as he fits right in with their mob.

Not that I think his mindless meanderings will have any bearing on the result, but it is idiotic for him to be saying anything slightly likely to be used as motivation by us prior to this match.
Don't poke the bear...

I love it when "We can beat them" is a news story about the team I follow.
This. We're Brisbane from the early part of the decade. Should be a belter, Pies bring slightly better form in but our whole squad goes too deep for them IMO. Their bottom 6 or so aren't up to our level.
As for Maxwell's quote I couldn't care less really, people were into Chappy for his thoughts re '08 GF paying little respect to Hawthorn. If he reckons they should have won so what, doesn't change the result. Hopefully he'll be pissing and moaning again come Sunday....

Exactly what i'm thinking witsend. Spot on! The Bulldogs did it to us last year and it blew up in their face when we smacked home 7 first quarter goals in the quarter final and never looked back. Some teams just never learn.

One thing i have admired with our team over the past few seasons is we don't fall for trash talk from other teams. Mark Williams did it in '07, and Mick Malthouse in the '09 prelim are just two examples. If Collingwood want talk themselves up they better bring it because the past three times we have played them it's been a snore fest.

You gotta wonder whether or not Harry O will say "this game isn't too significant for us" again.

Win, lose or draw i don't mind because the current articles in the paper have suggested the premiership is collingwoods even though they have half a dozen players who must prove themselves on the big stage this september.

Go Cats!

We do have a history of doing this. Remember Round 21 2007 v Port Adelaide? And what happened a few weeks later :thumbsu:
