THE AFL has opted against appealing the Tribunal's decision in the Brayden Maynard case, meaning the Collingwood defender is in the clear to play in the Magpies' preliminary final.

The AFL, having brought the charge against Maynard, said on Wednesday that it would not challenge the Tribunal's ruling, but would comment further later in the day.

"The AFL has confirmed that after careful consideration and review of the Tribunal's decision and reasons following last night's hearing into the incident involving Collingwood's Brayden Maynard and Melbourne's Angus Brayshaw, the AFL has decided not to appeal the Tribunal's decision," a statement read.

"Per the Tribunal Guidelines the AFL had to make this decision by 12:00pm AEST today.

"The AFL will release a further statement later today."
Finally some sanity 👍

There’s the confession. He came after smothering!

Also Woods is an idiot. Would not want to face him in a court room if you were on trial, guy is a win at all costs, spin the argument around type, lock up innocent people type.

In most of his cases where he has represented the AFL, any time his arguments get challenged by experts in their fields, and it looks like his argument might be exposed, he keeps moving the goal posts around and changing his argument until he gets the one he is confident with.

Comes across as more of a HR mouth piece for the AFL, than a lawyer with any clue about football.

That’s exactly what a good barrister would do - if it’s tanking, try something different. I mean, he has been bad enough but it would’ve been hilarious if he persisted with the bump and conscious decision line.

So sounds like the new precedent is that as long as there's a legitimate reason to launch yourself into a contest like a missile, whatever happens next is unavoidable and fair game.

Crippa is rubbing his hands together right now, gunna concuss smother so many fools this weekend

Maynard's submission

We're going back through the replay now as Maynard's counsel (Ihle) continues to attempt to clear him.

We're watching frame-by-frame from side on.

Ihle says, contrary to the earlier submission made by the AFL, Maynard did "hover and prop" before he jumped.

"It's not correct to suggest he has not taken off and not slowed at all. Rather, what he's done is he's propped and jumped off two legs. That's allowed him to jump higher and it's slowed his forward momentum."

- Michael Whiting

It's fact because it's human nature.

I have no issue with him leaving the ground, nor the fact that he came forward.

But he didn't brace for impact, he turned to bump in mid air and he knew full well what he was doing.
Just to be clear for you.....Your opinion doesn't classify as fact.
Rambling about human nature and planned acts being facts???....I'd check how deep into that bottle of scotch you are before you responding and dig a deeper hole

A lot of conscious thought for what was only milliseconds of time. Apparently not enough time to think.
Have you ever described a car accident you have been in?
I got hit from behind by a guy doing around 80kms hr while i was stationary.
Saw him in my mirror a split second before impact but reqcted by removing my hands from the steering wheel and foot from the brakes to dissipate the energy that would be transferred to my car.
That was a split second but look how much typing it took to describe it.
Verbal takes a minute at least.

Jack Martin going to be able to play on Friday or will this case still be going?

Left the ground, braced the shoulder and collected Brayshaw's head.

Maynard showed no duty of care with his actions.

4 weeks minimum imo
You are fully cooked. There was nothing he could of done after trying to another except protect himself or get hit himself too. You prefer both players get knocked out ?
The ppl suggesting he get banned need to get their heads checked. They barely know what it's like to play footy

"He should never have made a play for the ball in the first place"
"Never mind, we now accept he was making a football play, lets now focus on that happened when he was in the air instead"
"He had made a conscious decision to use his body to bump"
"Damn, expert said it was a reactionary decision, lets move onto something else"

Yeah he might be good. But it just shows the whole thing is a circus. If the AFL has a point, then stand by that point, not keep changing it just so you can win an argument. It then ends up to the point where at the end of the night, the AFL is seeking to suspend a player for a point completely different to their opening argument. It just comes across as the AFL changing the rules and interpretations on the go.

What are they going to have 15m zones, so players can't get up to full speed?
No. but more clarity around say who initiated the contact, Maynard he chose to smother part way through oh shit Brayshaw is there freeze up, drop sholder you before responsible intention or not. Brayshaw didn't initiate the contact probably needs to be better though out than that.

I've always leaned towards he will get off.

But as someone in here said earlier choose to bump hit and opponent high irrespective of intention you're in trouble

Choose to spoil make high contact to an opponent you have some explaining to do
