THE AFL has opted against appealing the Tribunal's decision in the Brayden Maynard case, meaning the Collingwood defender is in the clear to play in the Magpies' preliminary final.

The AFL, having brought the charge against Maynard, said on Wednesday that it would not challenge the Tribunal's ruling, but would comment further later in the day.

"The AFL has confirmed that after careful consideration and review of the Tribunal's decision and reasons following last night's hearing into the incident involving Collingwood's Brayden Maynard and Melbourne's Angus Brayshaw, the AFL has decided not to appeal the Tribunal's decision," a statement read.

"Per the Tribunal Guidelines the AFL had to make this decision by 12:00pm AEST today.

"The AFL will release a further statement later today."
Finally some sanity 👍

So every single high contact free kick in history has resulted in that player being cited by the MRO? How are you able to breathe when you're that dumb?
usually when there is a player asleep on the ground after the incident, and the umpire reports the player who struck him, the MRO get involved.

0 chance Maynard “braces himself” with a tucked shoulder if it was Pendlebury in his line instead of Brayshaw.

Known thug tries to make a tough statement, fails. A tale as old as the game itself. A KO from a fair “smother”, one in a million.
There's a fair bit of fudge in this thread.

Did he even look at the ball during the smother attempt? It's clear he wanted to make a statement and thought he would get away with it because "finals"

Regardless of the AFLs weird rules:

He attempted to smother then fell to earth. Realised he was going to collide with someone and protected himself like 1000s before him (and like 100s of other incidents per game). If you don't understand that you've never played any sport, contact or otherwise - collisions occur. Watching it in slomo is not a realistic reflection of the incident. He probably shouldn't have gone for it, but it's a natural reaction to attempt to stop the ball. I've done exactly the same in netball ffs.

You are in cognitive deficit if you think it was deliberate.

Imo he went into that contest to make Brayshaw earn it. Hence why his instinctive reaction was to tuck the shoulder in when impact was imminent. If he’d gone in only looking to get the ball I think we would have seen more of a tangle of limbs on the way down instead of the brick wall hit we got.
No, he went in with the only intent to smother the ball.

Anything else is fabricated in the minds of the observer.

This aged well. Straight to the tribunal. So who is the one dreaming :)
Not really. MRO left it through to the keeper - Laura Kane, with noise from Gill, Dill etc overruled. Strong argument they did so for optics/lawsuits - not the incident in isolation of itself.

The supporters at the ground are feral dogs. Absolutely sun human scum chanting like that. Weak as piss.
You were the "human scum" booing our player for trying to smother the ball!

All the Pies supporters were doing was smothering the boos to our player who had done nothing wrong.

Viney remonstrated with Maynard five minutes after the incident. This was - to quote the commentary team; to put Maynard off his game. Dare say supporters were blocking out the boos from Melbourne supporters and successfully so.

Concussion and CTE no longer a serious issue when it comes to finals.

Any Collingwood supporter who knows Paul Seedsman’s story and saw how his career ended should want this thuggery stamped out of the game. It’s pathetic.

No, they would have been booing him for concussing Brayshaw, not for attempting a smother.

My two cents worth.

who cares if it was a “genuine attempt to smother” - just say it was successful, just say he got hands to the ball - what happens next?

he still hits Brayshaw high. He still knocks Brayshaw out. Because touching the ball is not going to alter his momentum, or direction and Brayshaw was still going to be moving in the direction he was. The second Maynard left the ground, Brayshaw’s fate was sealed.

By deliberately jumping where he did, when he did, and how he did, the only outcome is an unconscious Brayshaw.
genuine attempt or not - successful attempt or not.

deliberate? No
reckless? very possibly
careless? Absolutely - at a minimum.

impact? high and severe

Correct weight, Randwick.

Was that the narrative last year when Cripps was reported for his head high attack on the Brisbane player?
