THE AFL has opted against appealing the Tribunal's decision in the Brayden Maynard case, meaning the Collingwood defender is in the clear to play in the Magpies' preliminary final.

The AFL, having brought the charge against Maynard, said on Wednesday that it would not challenge the Tribunal's ruling, but would comment further later in the day.

"The AFL has confirmed that after careful consideration and review of the Tribunal's decision and reasons following last night's hearing into the incident involving Collingwood's Brayden Maynard and Melbourne's Angus Brayshaw, the AFL has decided not to appeal the Tribunal's decision," a statement read.

"Per the Tribunal Guidelines the AFL had to make this decision by 12:00pm AEST today.

"The AFL will release a further statement later today."
Finally some sanity 👍

Literally me thought. It was a 'football action' in that he was jumping up to smother the kick and while coming down he was bracing for a collision and unfortunately collected a guy with a history of head injuries. But literally who knows, he could either get off, or he could get a month...toss the coin
Initially I thought he was fine…football action but on reflection he left the ground and once he is up there he must be a a little nervous as he has ironed out brayshaw..flip of a coin

What is interesting and fairly unprecedented in my view (correct me if i'm wrong) is that the commentary team have interviewed Maynard after the game and given him a chance to prove his innocence. It should be no surprise that Maynard is remorseful in said interview and has said how much he loves the bloke he knocked out. I mean FFS what else was he going to say?

I find this astounding that we have a tribunal decision pending and the commentary team have gone to the player and the player has been able to plead his innocence. I doubt players from other clubs get this opportunity. He has been given a chance to plead his innocence to all of Australia watching before the MRP have even made a decision - this is just madness.

Absolutely corrupt and the seed already sown to get him off.

Maynard has to go, has a duty of care, he chose to leave the ground, he chose to turn and hit him side on. What is he protecting himself from? The opposition player has just kicked the ball and is wide open Maynard could have stayed front on and absorbed the contact rather than taking him out

Happy to be proven wrong - Can you show me one clip / instance where in a final series, a player up for suspension has been able to plead their case to the australian audience via a commentary puff piece at the end of the match and before the tribunal has made a decision.

Makes no difference if it's in a final series or H&A they should be treated exactly the same. I'm not going to go looking for a replay but it literally happens all the time

6 pages on this while the Van Rooyen cheat shot has barely raised a mention. Odd.

Probably because the commentators decided in ten seconds that Van Rooyen will be suspended for two weeks.

Meanwhile the entire commentary team have been crapping on about how innocent Maynard is for the last two hours, despite him having a history of being niggly, dirty caveman.

Plenty of people will have him guilty for those reasons doesn't mean he should be for this.

Correct. The fact that he chose to jump and thenchose to drop his shoulder on Brayshaw's head is why he should be rubbed out.

His history of being a flog shouldnt come into it.

But it does for Toby Greene...

Ok, so my question as to whether anyone can demonstrate a time that a player has been given a puff peice interview after a game to prove their innocence after they've knocked a player out. To which you replied "Happens all the time". You are now saying you can't be arsed proving how it happens all the time. Makes sense. :thumbsupemoji:

If anyone was watching AFL for the first time they'd swear shoulder high hits were legal since the commentators were so defensive about it. The way the boys club commentators all unanimously agreed and urged that he gets off is actually quite sickening. How about they just shut the **** up about it and stop influencing public opinion.

Maynard 100% intended to hurt Brayshaw. Pretended to smother the ball, turns his body in the air, didn't raise his arms to lessen impact and elected to hit him at full speed with his shoulder in the head.

I guess pies fans are loving it because that act of thuggery won the game.

Highly likely. The AFL dont actually care about player safety.

Its why Brayshaw should then sue the AFL. And the players' insurers should be funding it.

Mate, if Brayshaw is getting knocked out cold from a hit like that he should not be playing the sport. Any other player gets hit like that and they are not concussed. Brayshaw likely has a soft spot, which if hit, he goes out cold.
