MCG lowers food prices

Would it be too cynical to suggest that there will be a corresponding drop in portion sizes?

As someone who goes to the footy pretty rarely the food prices aren't a major deal - I would much prefer though a better range of food with some higher quality options...

Honestly a drop in portion sizes is probably not a bad thing. You eat enough (slowly) to trick your stomach into feeling full.
Although I usually just pre buy large chip packets/ drinks from the supermarket.

The fact you can't get full strength beer is a major campaigner, but the wowsers have won out there and it's unlikely to be reversed any time soon.

Have 3-4 beers at the pub before, then take in some 'lemonade' or 'coke' with vodka/rum/scotch. Easy, cheap, and you can get by with 1 of those bottles for a game, maybe 2 if you really want to. Have done that for ages, works a treat.

I'd like to see the stadiums opened to additional vendors selling not Big W food.

But yet you can still get hammered in other areas of the ground.

"Public safety" is the PR cover story for wanting to sell midstrength beer at normal beer prices.

snitzel burgers are top notch.

**** coleslaw in a burger.

It's ridiculous, same with going to the movies and snacking with the movie in progress.
Yeah, drives me nuts that some people have to stuff their face right through a movie, barely taking a break, with foul smelling popcorn and noisy lolly wrappers and crap. They have no consideration for anyone around them. Less of an issue at the footy, but it really makes me wonder - why can't we go 3 hours without food anymore?

no chance this will happen at Adelaide Oval any time soon.

Chandler also said that Adelaide Oval's SMA had not spoken with the AFL about the pricing of food and beverages within the venue for AFL matches.

Despite the announcement on Monday that the MCG would slash its food and beverage prices this season, Adelaide Oval's prices would remain fixed as per its model that was set last October.

"They certainly haven't had any discussions with us direct," Chandler said.

"Our business model is quite complex. We've set our budgets.

"At the moment we believe our pricing is competitive and we'll continue to run a competitive stadium."

Great news for those who choose to buy food. Might be underestimating the intelligence of many football goers, however I can see those who were complaining about the prices will now buy more and end up spending more than they did before the prices were lowered.

Me, round 23

Great incentive by the MCG but I can imagine people will still spend the same amount or marginally less but get more for the buck. Don't know if it will extend to the outside pop up food vans but it would be great if it did.

Waiting to here the response from the caterers at Domain Stadium. Prices were always a rip off there for the quality you got.

people who cant go a couple of hours without food can rejoice that they still have to pay $4 for a pie or $4 for dodgy chips.

It's ridiculous, same with going to the movies and snacking with the movie in progress.

You guys must be the life of the party!
It's getting out of hand. The missus and I were at a mate's place on Sunday around 3ish, and in less than 2 hours he offered us not only coffee, but water and a piece of cake as well! CRAZY stuff!

Fantastic initiative!

My question is, and this is a serious question and not a troll, are the old prices 'REAL' prices? Or are they inflated to make the % difference/drop seem a lot higher?

The only reason i ask this is cause I never actually bought food at the footy even though I went to lots of games. I always ate at a restaurant/pub/home before attending the game and never buy anything at Etihad, MCG, SCG or Homebush.

I find it hard to believe that chips were $5.60, pies $4.80 and water $5.00.

nice, you almost had me there

We know about the wowser, and putting the food down as unhealthy. But in their defence the product is primarily disgustingly unhealthy. And correct me if I'm wrong but not exactly good enough to even be called a guilty pleasure?

I remember the old man calling Moorabbin vendors "thieves" for asking $1.20 for a hot dog.

I was hoping the prices would go up, not down. The queues were bad enough last year....next year.......

* I really don't care. I get a feed before I arrive at games.

Haven't heard anything on serving sizes though.

Would also love to know what sort of kickback the AFL is giving Spotless for dropping their prices. A publicly listed company won't drop their prices by this much without receiving some sort of compensation, in either monetary terms or guarantees of contract extensions.
