I believe the article says serving sizes will remain the same
early contract extension will do wonders though, and that appears to be the case here. They are trading price reductions for extended contracts.

You think that bringing food in would be allowed without the consent of the catering contractor?
The afl haven't negotiated with the caterers, they've negotiated with the mcc on the catering company's behalf to have the rent lowered, in turn, allowing for a reduction in cost for the fans

Also wonder when the Etihad catering contract is up for renewal? If it is this year then can see the AFL putting pressure on Etihad management to give it to Spotless. Whilst Etihad might be run independently of the AFL there is no doubt that if the AFL wanted the change they'd agree, it's amazing what can happen when you hang the prospect of tweaking the fixture so that Etihad would get more lower drawing games that are currently at the MCG.

Because Demetriou didn't care, crowds were increasing and criticism was limited so he didn't give it any time. Crowds have slipped a bit over the last few years also coinciding with an increase about how much it costs to go to the footy. With increasing competition for sponsorship dollars and crowds the AFL needs to keep people happy and coming through the turnstiles.
Whilst they will say they are travelling better than ever, the truth is things have been getting tougher for clubs over the last couple of years and it is only going to continue to get tougher going forward.

AFL wants to lower food prices at MCG, but AFL has no actual control over the prices as they are set by the company that holds the catering contract.
AFL talks to Spotless and works out a deal for cash or kind that will see them lower the food prices at the MCG for the upcoming season.
AFL then pushes Spotless as preferred caterer when catering contracts come up for renewal at grounds with an AFL co-share arrangement.
It's all pretty simple economics and if anyone thinks that it was just done out of the kindness of their heart is clearly lacking a fair bit upstairs.

How would they.
MCG is run by MCC Trust not AFL. MCC Trust outsource the catering contract not the AFL, although the AFL would be consulted, but final decision rest with MCC Trust. Company holding catering contract sets the prices, the AFL might be taking some glory for this but Spotless will be making sure that their profit is not effected.
AFL also need to make sure of this because Spotless is a publicly listed company last time I looked and they are there to look after the shareholders interests not the AFL or the footy public,

Still doesn't change the fact that the contract is not with the AFL to be caterer, so AFL can't set prices.

Thats true. The AFL doesnt have a preferred caterer that Im aware of either.

As much as some scoff, the AFL were front & centre in the negotiations with the Gs stadium manager, Melbourne Cricket Club, as the AFL are front & centre at Etihad & it seems the AFL is being asked to perform a similar role/produce the same reduction in food prices at both Adelaide Oval & Domain @Subi.

The West Australian can reveal that local fans will pay more than 50 per cent more for some items than those at the MCG.
It includes $5.50 for a 600ml soft drink at Domain Stadium compared with $4 at the MCG, $4.70 for a bottle of Mount Franklin compared with $3 and $6 for hot chips compared with $4. A hot dog at Domain will cost $6, but $4 at the MCG.
The MCG announced last month that it was dramatically cutting food prices to lure families back to football.
Domain Stadium chief executive Gavin Taylor said pricing there was consistent with the national average for AFL venues. He said the MCG's pricing was an anomaly.
For example, Adelaide Oval - which an Adelaide newspaper last week claimed had the most expensive food and drink pricing in the country - sells hot chips for $5. Hot chips are $6 at Domain.

Involved in tendering for the cleaning of the G, Spotless was the encumbent ... Wylie of the MCC Trust sat in on discussions with Gough for the MCC. No one from the AFL.

The AFL would have far more bargaining power at Etihad and the MCG. They have access to double the games and far greater crowds than can be obtained even at maximum in Adelaide and Perth. Adelaide and Perth you have two landlords - the WAFC and the SANFL who need money and cant afford to lose out on the precious catering revenue - Adelaide oval management have already set their budgets and cant reduce the catering costs further.
