It's obvious now that the comp is getting more and more even each year: the gap between the top and bottom teams seems definitely seems smaller. Equalisation and more teams certainly plays a role. I wonder if anyone has done a statistical deep dive into the relative 'evenness' or equality of teams. Like the win/loss differential vs ladder position, percentage differential etc. The % of teams barely even seems to correlate to ladder position from 2 (Carlton) down. It really feels almost any team can beat any other team on their day, few upsets really surprise that much. I guess the one outlier in 2024 is Sydney, but everyone from 2 to 14 or 15 can be competitive enough to win on their day.
Most would see it as a plus, but I wonder if too much relative equality can be a bad thing?
