I think that judging players on the actions of their player agents is a bit of a long bow to draw and a sure fire way to misjudge a players personality and character. Players get fairly well insulated from the discussion of agent and club most of the time. Of course choice of agent can come down to it a little, but these guys sign on to agents when they're 16-18 its not like they have all the tools to discern who they should be going with.

That lets them off too easy, in my opinion. The agent is there to represent the wishes of the player, and if the player isn't comfortable with how the agent is conducting the negotiations there is plenty of scope to ask them to rein it back, or change their representation.

If a player chooses to give their agent carte blanche to use whatever tactics make them the most money, the player is still responsible for those tactics.

I doubt a player is going to sack a manager who tried to get him more money.

No, but you might sack a manager who is hurting your relationship with your employer, or your reputation in the industry.

But you make a good point. Players should be expected to pursue the strategy that gets them the best deal. Most of us would do the same. Maybe player greed is a problem, but a bigger problem is that there hasn't been any structural change in response to increased player movement.

Zorko was reported to be at odds with the club at the end of last year ... then he sacked his manager and is seemingly very happy and playing great football.

(But he's been able to tackle for a while).

Rockliff said he was too honest for his own good when questioned about his contract status and is disappointed it’s now being played out in public.

“(Courier Mail reporter) Andrew Hamilton rang me and said the club confirmed the contract was off the table, so I answered the question honestly and said ‘yeah it was’,” Rockliff told RSN radio.

“It was a good lesson for me just to give the mundane answer and say it’s between my manager and the club.

“Unfortunately it’s playing out in the media and that’s not what I wanted and the footy club doesn’t need the extra pressure and I don’t want any extra pressure either.”

All above is great. Staying. Made mistake, should have used party line :thumbsu:

Then - only moments later...makes very similar comment :p

Taylor’s management is understood to have asked for $500,000 a season, but Rockliff believes the goalsneak remain a Lion next year.

“He’s happy up here. He fits in really well with the group, he’s the energiser bunny, I suppose you could call him,” Rockliff said.

“That’s for him to decide his future but all the signals that I get from him is he enjoys his time up here and I can’t really see him leaving.”

No, but that's kind of a binary take on this situation isn't it?
Possibly. I prefer to call it realistic. People here are primarily concerned for the football club. Players are primarily (not solely) concerned for themselves. Their agents, like all agents, are entirely conflicted because their concern is for themselves and (some would say to a much lesser extent), their clients. Things such the club's reputation or the player's relationship with the club are secondary considerations, if considered at all. Maybe they should be given greater weight but I doubt they will.

I agree with that, but I think there is a midway point for the players between firing them and giving managers carte blanche. I really don't know, but I'd be surprised if players gave absolutely no instructions to their agents on what outcome they're hoping to achieve.

Damage control. Public sentiment isnt falling how he thought.

What?

Rocky was asked a question about his contract at the Club's Hall of Fame dinner after yet another shit onfield display (for the umpteenth time this year). He was honest in his reply, but it wasn't as if he set out to create media speculation.

I am getting pretty sick of Lions supporters taking pot shots at Rocky on the back of half-truths, rumour and innuendo. That is not how we will rebuild our Club - supporters have to take ownership of their actions to, as of course do players, coaches, etc.

I think we're at cross purposes. Like you I would expect players to give their agent instructions and for the agent to abide by their client's wishes. My point is that players and agents approach it from a different perspective to that of the club and it supporters. What you call carte blanche is probably no more than an ambit claim made with a view to getting the best possible outcome for the player (and agent). Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, depending on the relative bargaining positions. Our club has probably been seen as a soft touch recently and now maybe the club is pushing back which is a good thing.

Then why has he waited this long to correct it? And why, if that is really the case, didnt he exhibit some common sense and know who he was talking to? Would he not expect it would hit the papers?

EDIT: re the highlighted bit. FFS he was talking to a "reporter" with a history of running every bit of shit he can against the club and he didnt expect it would create media speculation???

Did you hear the story bridge is for sale, I can get it for you cheap.

That is the kind of smart-ass response I would expect from opposition supporters. Really, how about giving our captain the benefit of the doubt instead of assuming the worst.

Because there is a stinking trail from a few different sources all leading back to the same guy.

Sadly I think you make a good point, winged1.

But it's just as likely that Rocky has actually got his way in the end, and that at some point the club will announce a new contract that has more or less been agreed upon already. We'll never get a confirmed value but it might well be overs.

We're damned whichever way public sentiment breaks. If our players are money-sucking parasites, the club's reputation suffers. If our players are poorly treated and have been pushed beyond breaking point, the club's reputation suffers.

I believe TBD as his sources are no doubt reliable. It makes me sad, but I'm taking emotion out of the equation and just thinking logically.

Sources for what?

Honestly not sure it is a huge deal about pulling his contract offer. Still got another year left to run anyway, if he walks out on us a team will at least have to trade for him.

Hope he stays though. Don't know what is going on but he has been a real supporter of our plight since day one.

scott lucas during his weekly segment on 1116 SEN said he nor lewis have said anything to the media.....therefore the club are leaking information.

when asked about what's been reported, he stated only two things are correct in newspapers - date and the name

And you believe this because...?

I have no doubt that clubs leak info, deliberately or otherwise. But I'm very very reluctant to believe a player at times like this.

So the Lions are leaking information on one hand, but the information the media has is wrong on the other. Which one is it Lucas?

Feel for Rocky in all this, he has publicly said he loves Brisbane and has bought a house with the intention to stay long term and yet he seems to be getting the same level of vitriol (if not greater) as Taylor, who hasn't said a damn thing.
