Sure, but anyone who has worked a real job could come up with worse stories. and getting paid + having other responsibilities that rely on your income makes having a shit boss a whole lot more complicated.

They didn’t work for him though, they were doing it for free hoping they could get paid work elsewhere. The whole site is for that. Making money in journalism is next to impossible as it’s cornered by Cornes types.

Even as a card carrying clique member I'm struggling to see the issue here. If you're paying somebody and they're relying on you for their livelihood, then you're in a position of unequal power and you have a responsibility to treat the other person properly. But unpaid writers? If you're getting mistreated or feeling underappreciated, who cares? Just leave. If the business is going to suffer because they're driving away good journos because of the way they treat their writers, but the writers aren't getting paid anyway, that's the business' problem, not yours. They weren't offering you anything anyway.
