I have to admit to having close to zero interest in this Inner Sanctum `journalism' stuff, but the obvious infighting aside I have to ask the question, what do the Jacks and Rebeccas etc expect to gain in the long term from their amateur involvement?

Doing it as an interest or hobby I get, but I suspect for most of them the possibility of a paragraph or two on a web site, a country newspaper, or a monthly local rag (assuming they still exist) is probably about it, and that aint gonna pay the mortgage.

For the contributors it's something to put on the resume, for the owners it's hoping it gets big enough to commercialise. This website is a good example. There were probably hundreds of attempts at similar but only Chief became a millionaire out of it.

Jack is actually a local journalist,
Has worked for many local papers, so it is his vocation.

For him it would be trying to keep up with trends etc. as the printed press slowly dies.

I reckon like most businesses, the money comes in a buyout by one of the big guys if your following gets high enough.

Think of it as opening a burger place and hoping you annoy Maccas enough that they buy you and close you down giving you enough money to buy a franchise or open a coffee shop next to Starbucks to do the same again .
