Melbourne GONE in 2012.....

I looked after the game wondering if any of them were going to post crap about "needing to put in a better effort next week" (looking at you Brad Green). The only players that tweeted were players that didn't play, none of them were about having a nice meal.
Fair enough. DOS might have set it straight above.

Not according to the blokes on SEN on Sunday morning. There in disbelief.

They also suggested that the Jeff White trade was a **** up and that we should have traded Stefan Martin for Xavier Ellis.

Not much weight in R Shaw's comments IMO

Which Melbourne player tweeted after the game on Saturday something about looking forward to going out for a nice meal that night?

That may seem like a small thing but by f*** does it speak volumes.

It was Colin Sylvia.

You know, the guy with two fractures in his back.

He was one of your best, agreed, but that wasn't saying much. Honestly, I want Watts to become what he promises to. I honestly do. That's why it frustrates me SOOOO much to see it. He needs to dive into a pack head first Jimmy Hird styles and just fight ***** for the ball

Thankyou! I'm not trying to slight the guy, I just want to see him step up.

He'd just be exponentially better if he could add that physicality to his game.

I see it as well.

But he's quite obviously being used as an outside player in our midfield at the moment, why should he have to get the ball out when it isn't his role?

He's physicality is always improving, slowly .. for sure... but there's an upward trend.

Was one of our best and one of the best players on the ground in the first half IMO.

I see what you did there :p

But with a new coach - who aims to actually WIN games, new game plan, new culture, the emotion of losing Jimmy Stynes, all this will impact on their performances. I'd give them till round 8 and then see how they're truly travelling.

Have you looked at who they play from round 8 till the middle of the season? Could easily be 2-9 or even 1-10. It all starts for the Dees from round 12...

Amusing that a few Dees supporters are distancing themselves from w=l

Re: Jack Watts - he was probably one of the few that put in a passable effort. You can criticise the 'inside' and 'tough' aspects of his game (ie quite non-existent at this point - on the weekend he had 4 contested possies vs 13 uncontested and had 2 clearances), but he did his job. I didn't watch the whole game, but he did okay from what I saw and not every player is a contested ball extractor and tackling machine.

Interestingly though he had 0 inside 50s and 3 rebound 50s - what's up with that?

I love that whelan=legend's name is shortened to w=l, which basically sums up Melbourne's culture under Bailey.

He was playing higher up, off a wing and in the midfield more. Then, when he did go forward, he went deep forward.

Forward line was Clark and Howe primarily with Blease and JT floating around.

Like he would have made a difference anyway. Sylvia is the ultimate personification of the problems at Demonland.

Not sure that's how he should be used. The Prospectus noted that at the club in 2011 he was third in score assists and second in retention for inside 50s - and we've known that even since his debut Watts' foot skills aren't an issue. You mention Clark and Howe - now that the Dees have two decent key position forwards it should be Watts delivering to them surely?

A future as a half-forward flanker might be best for Watts. But that's just my personal view.

Personally tipped Brisbane.

Didn't expect Melbourne to perform given their off season.

Loss of highly rated number one draft pick in Tom Scully
Jurrah machete attack
Increasing media scrutiny of Jack Watts
The loss of Jim Stynes

All with a playing group not exactly renowned for their mental toughness.

Add to this.

A new coach and time to learn a new game plan
A young list
And if the rumours of a bust up between green and Clark are true, a divided dressing room.

Need certainly has his work cut out. IMO they'll get better in the second half of the season.

This isnt a dig at Watts but when you name a bloke who spent time in the midfield and he only had 18 possies for one goal as third best, your team has problems.

Not that I disagree... but HOW exactly is that relevant to what I said/was responding to....

At all?

Look, I suppose the only bright side to all this is the reality of how clubs learning game plans have gone. Hawthorn and West Coast being the recent examples.

The squad's fitness was atrocious, Neeld and Misson said so pre-season. The squad had never played a structured game plan to the extent that Neeld is putting them through. Collingwood players have said it took them 2-3 years to learn the game plan. It's the first game.

But by god am I sick of us being garbage. It's going to be a ****ing long season if we play like this.

A lot of Melbourne supporters, like a lot of people in society, are reactionary. It's a condition known as MFCSS. You only need to check out the Demonland forums to see it in action. I have seen people legitimately asking for the sacking of the coach after one game. I am one of the rare Melbourne supporters that doesn't lose my shit after one terrible game, especially when the pre season has shown we are slowly heading in the right direction.

Nice to see I made your sig, DOS. Unfortunately I can't fit in my sig you saying that you would take Urquhart over Pendlebury. Boy did I LOL.

For the record, Worsfold also stated it took 2-3 years to implement our version of the forward press successfully. You will just have to wear the crap for a while and hope the losing culture can get disposed of quickly, and the unneeded senior players moved on at the right time.

Have you seen how low possession our games have been lately? Watts, at 18 posessions, had the fourth most posessions in our entire team. The problem is the lack of uncontested ball we are 'winning'.

You already tried drafting them - Maric and Scully - and now they are both playing seniors for different clubs.

The problem isn't the holes in your list.

The problem is the entire fabric of your club. It is gutless.

Let's be honest here, while Jimmy Stynes was bravely struggling it was verboten to mention this because somehow Melbourne fans deluded themselves that because Jim was brave beyond belief, this would somehow percolate into the whole organisation.

But Saturday showed us that didn't happen.

Buddy you are the deadset biggest troll on this thread. The stuff you are banging on about and the way your are drawing it to Stynes is bordering offensive. You are looking for a rise. Your club bought two flags in the 70's and won a couple in the 90's, you are less significant in this competition than we are. This will no doubt cause are shit throwing match, coz you are that sort of poster. While we may not have won a flag since 64 we haven't been as bad as some on here, with very short memories, like to make out.

Fair enough if you think we are soft and don't give a yelp at the moment, but this certainly hasn't been the case always. Certainly not when we beat up on the Roos to make our last GF.

You have had about 20 odd posts on this thread. Get a flipping life champ and worry about your own backyard. We might be due for a seriously shitty season, but right now both our clubs are 0-1.

As for Maric, he is a massive C-grader and played in a Tigers team that talked it up all summer and got whacked. He made the same mistakes on Thurs night he made with the Dee's. He had his chances. didn't take them.
Go start a thread on how you pioneered grand final breakfasts and friday night footy. Talk about our supporters living in the past.

As for criticising the crowd..its about 11,000 more than we had in any other year Vs Lions. And anyone that thinks there were more than 3,000 Lions supporters at the game simply weren't there. Maybe because of the TV camera angles it looked like you had support the members was packed full of dees fans and that made up the majority of the crowd.

You gotta wonder if they had picked Nic Nat and Martin instead of Watts and Scully, whether they'd be in a different predicament.

Find it interesting that Bailey was asked to bottom out.. ended up costing him his job and they stuffed the picks up anyway..

Jack Watts over Nic Nat. How many clubs would have done the same thing?

What's MFCSS? I can figure out the MFC.

I doubt any legitimate supporter wants to sack a coach after one AFL game and methinks you're exaggerating that point. They are however perfectly entitled to ask questions as to whether there has been evidence of improvement. Last weekend only provided evidence that your (now former) skipper is a downhill skier, many of the senior players are still rubbish, and that you're still waiting on your young ones to step up. Has anything really changed? Same old story as 2011.

If I were a Melbourne fan I'd be getting a bit impatient at this point - the 'its only Round 1' excuse doesn't wash when fans see the same crap from last year. Yes, not every team can win a game and on average you'll only win half the time, but you'd hope that there is evidence that your supported club is heading in the right direction.

That's what I'm thinking. We've got draft picks coming out our behinds and we have players that are definitely vulnerable. Davey actually is still contracted for a year (?!?!?!) but Green is OOC and I would not be at all surprised to see him moved on. Moloney is a RFA - I wonder if any teams would consider making him an offer? Melbourne could then take the compo from that (ANOTHER draft pick) and completely reload out of the superdraft.

Coupled with taking the youngsters and moulding them into the gameplan...I don't know. The coming offseason may be the biggest Melbourne will ever see. I won't be surprised if we attempt to trade into the draft even more.
