My wife who had not, until this time, renewed her membership just got a phone call from John Baird asking her to re-sign.

She said he was really pleasant on the phone - kept asking "Brownie" what he had to do next.

Good to see the club using players to contact lapsed members.

Good to hear: there was an article on the Roos site saying the players, admin etc would be calling non renewed members from last year, glad they have stuck by their words.

Go Roos

So the phone call did the trick then, Jabba? :)

Yeah, she signed up on the spot. Bairdy told her that a few "supporters" had already fobbed him off though.

Personally, unless I couldn't afford it (which is the only valid excuse), if the players of a club are willing to get on the phones to get members I'd sign up straight away.

(My wife also said she was tempted to ask him if she could talk to Jess and she's 32.)

Kangaroos find 200 lapsed members in 4 days
Kangaroos Membership Department

Last week the Kangaroos Membership Department ran a 4 day competition to find lapsed members. The prize was an HP Photosmart Digital Camera which was kindly donated by HP and the prize was won by Rohan Murley from Edithvale. Over the 4 days, 200 lapsed members put their money where their mouth is and signed up which is a fantastic result but we still need to get in touch with as many of these ‘lapsed members as we can’. If you know of anyone who says they ‘barrack’ for the Kangaroos but are not a member – tell them to get in touch with the club.

I think it's great that they have managed to re-sign these lapsed members but it doesn't seem right to me that they 'reward' these tardy people by offering them incentives such as cameras and money (like they did last year). What do other people think?

Was chatting to a friend of my working at the club, ringing up the lapsed members at some of the excuses.

I assumed only financial reasons would be a valid excuse - it appears not. A couple of classics for you;

1- one guy refused to sign because Simon Crean was our #1 ticket holder and he 'did not support the war on Iraq' - I mean who gives a $hit, you're only hurting the club with that attitude.

2 - another refused because of the clubs bad treatment of Micky. I mean did I miss something? I don't think anyone at the club ran to the media and slagged off the other party.

Come on people, if you can afford it, support the club the best possible way and ensure our survival.

Any member who signed up prior to 31 Dec 02 had the chance to win a new Mazda.

The digital camera was donated by a sponsor so what does it matter?

The club cannot take the attitude that all members will just roll up, they have to go out and find them: as they are doing tonight.

i rather have sponsor donated incentives than members not being chased up at all, good to see the club being proactive and chasing these members up rather than counting them as lost for 2003

Mrs Roofus was working on the phones tonight, I'm sure she'll supply a report to everyone how it went.

Good to hear Roofus, just got back from offshore this morning, rang the club, asked them if they wanted me to phone the lapsed WA members,(save the club some $$$) no they said, do you want $200 to go towards the cost of the phone calls, no they said, supposdley got a deal where by they are charged a flat rate of 8 cents, for anywhere in the country. Cant be with Telstra i think!!

I phoned the club offering to call any OS people and left my email address. No follow up from the club.:(

I rang the club and left a message saying that I would help out. Haven't heard a thing back. It's pretty poor if you ask me - a simple return phone call to say that they had enough volunteers should not have been too hard - especially at only 8c a call...

Membership Telethon

The club signed up approx. 297 members in the three hours. The whole playing list was there and we think we got through the list of 6000 lapsed members.

Thank you KangaroosMedia you anticipated my new thread by about ten seconds.

Well done to the club, players and supporters for chasing them up. 4.95% of those lapsed people is better than nothing, but still leaves 95% that wont rejoin. Any idea what their problem is, and how we can get them back? Is it cost, or are they just fair weather supporters who don’t think we’ll play finals, perhaps its due to Pagan, Carey or a combination of all. Just wondering what makes this people tick, we need em onboard! Did we take note/s of their reasons?

Heres an email i got from my VP Coterie manager at the club regarding the phone in, jasonwaroo@yahoo.com.au

good point roostar hope notes were taken and to be implemented sooner than later, even the good old discount on away games with a full membership would be nice to still have the saving a family may make could change thier mind.

I also have a new member who is signing up this week, she has never been one before.

I sold 6 memberships last night ... YAY me!!

But there were a lot of people who couldn't afford it but were trying to get the money together. I think we will get the same amount again of members over the next week again from people contacted last night but couldn't sign up on the spot.

I must admit though that it is VERY difficult to convince a drought-stricken farmer that he shouldjoin up this year when Corey Jones is carrying on like a dipstick in the background. Seriously, that guy needs to grow a brain. It was hard enough to hear without his antics.... spud of a bloke.

I had a go as well last night. Sold 8. Was tough going with some people. When i get a chance i'll write about the various reasons i heard for not joining.

But without going into a heap of detail, i'll just say that these boys should be thankful they are gifted footballers, because some of them really lack in the people skills/gratitude department.

I consider myself a pretty die-hard supporter. Will do just abotu anything to support this club. But the attitude of some of (alot of actually) our players, considering what it was WE (supporters) were doing for THEM last night almost went a little way towards turning me in the direction of Myee8 territory (and no, i aint talking about WA!)

I did say almost.

But i wouldnt have thought it would be too hard to say "thankyou" or even "hello". Or to take what we were trying to do seriously.

Disappointing.

Breidis.. interesting comment about Corey Jones. My intuition was right about this guy.

Anyway, sorry to deflate the tyres here, but I sincerely hope we do get another 300 sign up in the next week or two, because I reckon a 5% return rate is pretty poor, considering these are "existing customers" in many ways. A 10% rate I would have seen as reasonable, and would have been hopeful of higher, given these people have already been members.

That said, I don't want to sneeze at the return. Better than nothing. Well done Briedis, by the way. Good to see you just support the club! ;)

Also, wonder whether the club was 'selective' enough in choosing who does the calls. I'm sure some of them would be great, others, not so great. I'd rather speak with someone who makes sense, is polite, intelligent/articulate, not a player, just cos he's a player.
