I'll have a stab at a best 22

B Walker Hurley Kilpin
HB Hannebury Trengove Smith
C Zaharakis Shuey Strauss
HF Hunt Lisle Scully
F M.Clark Watts Lynch
Foll Z.Clarke McGarry Gotch
Inter McKernan Melksham Banner Martin

The only one I'm not sure about is Walker, great athlete but can't kick it as well as you would like. Purves and Griffiths could easily slot into the forward line and Gysberts on ball. Draftables in bold.
If it is matt kilpin, he is definitely of draftable age - in yr 12 at school
Same with Martin - is in yr 12 for haileybury

also shiels (not in this team but name came up on this thread) - is that matt shiels, from Xavier?

Well he's kidding himself if he doesn't think Zaharakis is draftable.

If he's such a sure thing why wasn't he picked up last year when he was eligible? He's on the bubble but I'd have those other kids ahead of him.
He was regarded to be one of the more unlucky players not drafted last year and he's improved a hell of a lot this year. My understanding is that the heated argument between Pelchen and Clarkson on Draft Day was over Dew and Zaharakis.

Your understanding was a misunderstanding, the player was Dan McKenna. Like I said IMO he's on the bubble but just how many players under 180cm get drafted? You might want to factor that in.

I'm genuinely asking and not snapping back here, but where did you hear it was McKenna? I had heard from two separate and reliable sources that it was Zaharakis. I'm not saying that I am right and you are wrong because there's plenty of conjecture to be had over such an issue unless one of us was over on the Sydney table with front row tickets to the bout. I just want to know how mine is a misunderstanding but yours is apparently rock solid. Did I miss something?

Zaharakis is 180cm by the way, so yes, a little on the short side, but not exactly a midget. I think his pace and disposal are good enough to offset this, with areas of improvement being attack on the contest and endurance.

Link doesn't work.

Just google clarkson-pulls-rank-over-dew

And it doesn't say they would've taken McKenna.

It says that McKenna was an option still available when they took Dew and it was more of a suggestion by the writer then a fact that the Hawks wanted McKenna.

Seems as though you were wearing your "prove your point" goggle while reading that article, because there is absolutely no reference to Hawthorn saying they were even considering McKenna

While the link doesn't say they definitely would've taken McKenna there's nothing to say they wouldn't have. He was obviously drafted soon after so it's not inplausible and after discussing it a bit more over PM with Chip it sounds like he is spot on the money. :thumbsu:

What do we make of their side after Game 1.

Surely Ashley Smith has to come in sometime soon if he's back from injury and fit, perhaps a few of the bottom agers Shiels/Gysberts/Fitzpatrick should get a run also.

So who do they drop? Sloane was disappointing but will they make allowances given he's just back from injury? Tom Lynch and Matt Kilpin also struggled a bit. It'll be interesting to see what Dickson does.

Any thoughts?

wasn't there, but plenty of people told me metro's midfield got flogged, so maybe a good in and under player has to come in cos it seems to be a lot of recievers and hollywoods in the midfield, need a mix

That's true about Sundays game. But I though on paper the side the other day should've had a decent mix of inside players and good clearance players. I reckon they had at least 6 of them in Sundays side who they couldve put through the midfield, perhaps they tended to use them in other roles cos a few of them are 'scrubbers', maybe they just need to re-jig what they've got and try and get a better midfield combination. Banner, Gotch, Shuey started there on Sunday. Kilpin, Sloane, Hannebery, Clark, Zaharakis would be the others.

for some reason it is continually said kilpin hasnt got athletisim for the AFL but if you see his result is actually quite athletic.
has run a sub 3 secs for 20m
have herd he has a very high beep test result.

i can understand why peopel are saying this as he doesnt look 'fast' in matches but i think this could also have something to do with his build, is quite muscular so it may not look as though he is quick compared to a skinny nippy player.
