Coach Michael Voss

This might be the root of the whole problem

Football Director Greg Williams will head the panel, with fellow directors Tim Lincoln and Patty Kinnersly, club great David Parkin, CEO Cain Liddle and footy boss Brad Lloyd.
The last name on that list is a real concern. Has been the head of a failing football department for 5 years. He’s onto coach number 3 who isn’t looking too good. He’s ultimately responsible for everything within the football department - players, coaching, list management, high performance, etc. Credible arguments can be made for failings in all of those areas. Time to move on from Brad.

Don't think we need a review to work that out.
The boards job to deal with it, but replace with who?

My prediction is when the President and board are changed so will go the coach.
Voss will only get next year. I disagree with that Voss is the cause of our demise. Yesterday Voss got them to play through the coridoor and we put more speed on the ball. Voss restructured the fwd line in the 3rd qtr and we hit the lead. The skill execution errors are not Voss' fault and until we have a list of 30 fit players, who can play a modern afl game plan-no coach is taking us to finals

The players look confused with the game plan and that hesitation is leading to skill errors- like others have said it’s a head space thing. Hesitation even a split second kills you at the top level. We looked a different team in the 3rd quarter. Why? Because the game was basically cooked and we had to take the game on. It’s when we look most dangerous. It was last year too. Not all skill errors are on the coach but a lack of confidence and/or confusion falls squarely on the head coach. People also say it’s not his fault we keep missing the snap shots. Yes it is. He should have a clear rule for players to only snap inside 20-30m, only on the players preferred leg, and only if it opens up the angle. Driving the standards and setting team rules is on the coach.

We’ve seen it many times throughout the AFL not just at Carlton. Teams and players when they have no faith in the game plan or confusion around it look second rate. It’s why new coaches or interim coaches get the bounce effect- they keep the game plan simple and let the players play on instinct.

The buck stops at the top. We had a game plan last year that just needed another preseason to bed down. Instead he’s overreacted to the late game losses last year and essentially tried to implement a ‘keepings off’ type game plan which actually is counter productive to our list strengths. We have deeper issues than just the coach but right now he’s the main problem.

And to those who say we can’t keep sacking coaches. If you realise you’ve got the wrong man do you stubbornly refuse to move him on just because we’ve sacked coaches before? The bigger issue falls on our inability to put a decent panel together to select the correct coach. Too much back room politics from power brokers and such with selection. That and we overreact. Young coach in Bolton so we then get an experienced coach. Keep an interim coach because the players essentially dictated it etc etc.

We’ve got the best key forwards in the league and we can’t kick a score. Also why is Harry getting the majority of his possessions in the opposition half.

We need to have both inside 50 in scoring range all the time, with the smalls at their feet

Just one of the many issues
Actually, Geelong have the best two forwards in the league, they won a flag and they don’t do that.

There was nothing stopping him doing it from the opening bounce apart from his adherence to “the system”.

Last years one wood game plan was not sustainable. We had to learn to score off turnover but we can not maintain posession. If our players can not absorb the complexity and pressure to the degree of other sides, they should not be our players

We're looking at a wasted season. Not sure how much of the malaise can be heaped on Voss but sliding towards the bottom four will have the obvious consequence.
We shouldn't be surprised at another coach sacking, it's not just the Carlton way, it's common in professional sport.
Premier League had 10 sackings last season, 13 this year, and the season hasn't finished yet. C'est la vie.

Blue By Blood said:.... with Carlton's 'close' losing performances against the Magpies and the Demons late last season when you went in undermanned in both games, they were still 'top performances' regardless of losing and to say anything otherwise is just trolling. So given that the Magpies and Dees are performing so well in 2023 and both likely top 4 participants, it makes no sense at all to how poorly Carlton is presently travelling and I might add with lesser injuries than 2022, so it simply makes no sense at all. Seeing big Harry mark the ball upfield last night on more than one occasion, then take a month of Sundays to kick the ball forward, with never any intention of quickly handballing off to a team-mate or reel onto his left foot to get the ball moving 'quickly', or simply changing direction, is somewhat indictive as to what is happening with the club at present, so indecisive in so many ways and it appears to be running through the entire team, which probably suggests there is much merit in what you are saying Blue By Blood said:, one things for certain you guys are a far, far better side that what's being dished up at the moment.... all the best for remaining season.

The game plan of 2nd half of last season post one wood game is shit as well.

Making us a slow moving stoppage team is conpletely out of step with how the game is going in general. Sides let us overuse the ball and wait for us to turn it over, then run and go, as we are all static with our slow ball movement.

Current game style needs to be binned and consigned to history, it doesn’t work and isn’t going to work. It’s horrible to watch, looks horrible to play and producing crap results.

Prem league has relegation, so you have sides who are scared of going down changing managers hoping for a Hail Mary bounce in form to keep them up.

No such worry in the afl, we could finish last (even if we don’t win another game we’d be hard pressed to finish that low this season, lowest we could go is 15th) and the sun would rise and we’d go again next year.

This is damning…

What the hell has happened at Carlton?

We cast our mind back to last May, and the Blues were flying high. With a new coach in Michael Voss at the helm, Carlton were 8-2 after 10 rounds.

Charlie Curnow was looking like the player we’d always hoped he’d become, and on his way to a Coleman Medal, with his teammate Harry McKay having won it the previous year.

Sam Walsh was the best young midfielder in the competition, having polled 30 Brownlow votes the year before, and Patrick Cripps had been best on ground in five of the opening seven weeks, and would go on to claim the coveted medal himself.

If we put together a ladder from Rd 11 last year, the Blues would be sitting 13th, in the bottom six, with eight wins, 11 losses and a draw. The teams below them would be Fremantle, GWS, Hawthorn, North Melbourne and West Coast. It’s a sorry site.

Carlton’s eight wins in that almost-12 month period have come against:
– West Coast twice and North Melbourne, and those two teams along with Hawthorn are effectively bye rounds these days
– GWS twice, who have been in the doldrums for two years
– Fremantle in Melbourne, and they’re going worse than the Blues over the same period
– Essendon last year, who were about to sack their coach
– Geelong in Round 2 this year, who were wildly out of form at the time, and Carlton only scraped past
There is not a single “good” win among them. Not one, that suggests they are a team of substance.

Rarely have we seen a team that is so far less than the sum of its parts, than what we are seeing from the Blues right now.”
