I have produced on essay on Mick's performance, now lets look at our recruiting. A couple of rules - for a pick to be a flop must have been a better player within 10 picks.

2005 - Murph at pick 1 when Kennedy was at 4 and Pendles at 5. We had pick 4 as well. Kennedy was correct and frankly Pendles is better but I wouldn't classify Murphy as a flop. Bower at pick 20 but nothing after than until Vince at 32 - not a flop. Edwards at 36 when Swallow was there at 43. Carlille at 44 - again not close enough to be a flop IMO. Um how despite being crap did we only take 3 picks in the national draft??? Patful and Stokes only players of note taken after our picks so whilst we didn't nail this draft it isn't a failure at all. Traded pick 52 for Saddington - not good but not much taken post. Observation - 1 or 2 more picks in the top 50 would have probably netted us another reasonable player.

2006 - Gibbs at pick 1 when Boak at 5, Selwood at 7 and Reid, Brown, Frawley and Reiwoldt all in top 13. Still was consensus number 1 so not calling this a flop. Hampson at 17 and Grigg at 19 - Mackenzie at 29 is an obvious choice but pretty far back. Tippet at 32. None of them close enough that I would say our picks were pathetic though. Austin at 35 when Goldstein at 37 and Houli 42 - fail. Benjamin at 51 when Thomas was 53 and Grey 55 - massive fail. Anderson at 67 with Westhoff at 71 - fail but that fair out you can't count it. We did well in the rookie draft but bad in pre season draft. Some really good rookie picks across the board. Observation - 2 more picks in the top 15 and could have set us up with KPP. Again more picks around the top 50 would have likely unearthed a reasonable player.

2007 - Traded for Judd - that can be debated elsewhere but you can't criticise it. Traded pick 52 for Hadley which could have been Hooker at 54 - fail. Kreuz at 1 was a bad pick but that is largely injury based. Another top 15 pick could of had Rioli or Dangerfield. Taylor, Rance and Ward picks 17-19 sheesh! Brown and Armfield - not much after them besides Hookers. Was not a deep draft. Again we stuffed the pre season draft taking Pfieffer over Stef Martin and Tom Bellchambers. Observations: another top 15 pick would have been fantastic. Another 1-2 picks in the top 20 could have been amazing. Not much in the draft after pick 30 and again trading in mature players cost us.

2008 - traded pick 24 for Warnock - could of had Redden, Beams or Hanners - kill me now. Yaz at 6 was a good pick. Robinson at 40 when Sloane was 44. Taking Johnson in preseason pick before Rockliff was pathetic. Rookie draft had some good players. Observations: 1 or 2 picks in the 20-30 range would have gotten us a gun mid. Again an older player over youth cost us.

2009 - McLean at pick 11 when Talia was pick 13 - kill me now. Lucas at 12 when Talia, Jetta, Menzel and Fyfe were top 20 picks - vomit. Davies at 43 not much after him. Observation: trading pick 11 for McLean was criminal. 3-4 picks in the top 25 would have netted some amazing players. Not much after pick 25.

I will do the rest tomorrow if there is desire for it what does this short analysis show?:

1. don't bring in mature ages from other clubs - they are flops and you can unearth untried talent easier. Jones, Tutt etc are teaching us this again.
2. get as many picks as you can in the top 30-40. The odds of success after pick 40 drop dramatically
3. a pick from 10-20 can unearth an absolute star

Below is an image of the Bianchi flagellanti...

proces.JPG

In the late-fourteenth century this movement swept through Italy, creating quite a stir. Essentially, for a few months these people dressed in white robes marched all over the country whipping themselves to both signify their devotion and atone for their sins.

At least they thought they were getting something out of it...

We seem to indulge in continuous self-flagellation with no discernible purpose other than to remind ourselves of our past ineptitude...

I don't get what this continual hindsight drafting is supposed to achieve. SOS touched it but it was still a goal.

It isn't about damming pick after pick - is about looking at the past and saying what is the best strategy to take. That isn't player x over player y - it is about the number of picks and where they fall to have the odds of getting the best result

That and the fact a lot of top 10 draft picks pick themselves. Anyone care to say that Gibbs, Murphy or Kruezer weren't number one or at worst number 2 draft picks in their respective years?. Watts was widely regarded as the best kid in the land in his draft, very closely followed by Naitanui. I don't remember any outrage when we took Lucas as a top 10 pick.

Admittedly picks beyond the top 10 can be speculative, but our record of player development has been shocking. Our most controversial pick right from the start has been Boekhurst, certainly in my living memory.

That explains it then.

No really, let's go back to the eighties draft selections. It's fun and educational too.

The board is trying to work out the best strategy going forward for us as a club. I would have thought actually analysing what we did when last in this situation (i.e. in 2005) would have some merit as a discussion point.
