Good point. He's a lame duck coach right now. No use dragging it out the rest of the season. But we still need to conduct a proper coach search next year, open the job up to interviews, get the best one in. For this year, the new coach auditioning too. But at least it could liven the place and players up.

In all honesty I'd be concerned about Mick's health given how passionate he is in and around game day. Realistically the stress that the job is causing him is just pointless now. I can't see anyway he will coach next year, so may as well just hang up the boots now and retire with some dignity left.

Proper job search for the next coach is crucial. Bring in outside opinions from 'experts' in the league to find us the right person for the job.

The only question I have with Mick standing down/being sacked is who coaches us for the rest of the year? You'd say Laidley would be a decent option but I'm not 100% sure.

We aren't moving anywhere. We are pushing this sort of rebuild. Mick probably will go but is being held onto. Just ****ing make a decision. Is he going, is he staying? Just ****ing make a choice. Is it a rebuild, is it not? Grow some balls and ****ing make a choice.

Mick Malthouse inherited a team that narrowly missed the finals after a horrendous run of injuries. That team had 16 players aged between 20 and 25 - in other words, a team just about ready to enter its prime. Today we had 15 players in our team aged 24-28 (plus Judd/Simpson aged 28+ who are still serviceable older players). We are not 'rebuilding' - we are in the realisation of that 'prime', yet we just lost to last place on the ladder, at home, with 9 days rest and close to a full team available for selection.

Under Malthouse, players who were entering their peak years have regressed badly. Our skills and fitness are atrocious. Our players lack motivation. Our game plan is horrific.

Basically, our coach has failed at player development, failed at skills and match-day preparation, failed to motivate the players, and failed to implement a game plan, despite having a list of players in their peak years.

So what the F*** does Malthouse actually do well as coach, and why would we keep him into next week, let alone renew his contract? Because he has done it before? His last club pensioned him off just as their own team was entering its prime because they thought he wasn't up to it. He came back to football a) to spite Collingwood, b) to break the record for games coached, and c) because we offered him a truckload of money. None of those were the right reasons, and he's turned us into a laughing stock.

It won't matter if he gets punted now or at the end of the season, the results will be the same and he will still not be coaching next year.
So they might as well make the damn choice and give this team some direction. We are in limbo now.

We don't have many good choices in our staff unfortunately. A lot of other teams are loaded with experienced coaches. Ours is a bunch of newbies and Malthouse yes-men.

2 choices, happy with either. 1) Mick steps down and perhaps we become more competitive and some players save their careers. Early draft picks 1 priority. 2) Mick gets resigned, and start to work out who stays and who goes, we finish bottom 4. Early draft pick a priority.

The majority of this group is list with mick as coach so either 3/4 of the list goes or he does or both.

I have been on the keep MM side until now, last week against the Pies was terrible, today is worse....
Yup ditto

amongst all my friends and footy circles, I've defended him relentlessly

I'm out

I am in the same camp Quazza - after 3 years surely the players know the game plan & the game plan is terrible.

Due to MM's salary I can't see him quitting but also can't see the club sacking him, as I don't know if we could afford to.

Excellent post full of many erudite observations.

Realistically I'd be surprised if any of those coaches are still on our payroll next year bar maybe Green, Laidley and Osbourne. Even then Osbourne and Capuano would be under the pump given the lack of development that we've had recently.

If John Barker is still a coach at our club next year I'll be fuming. He turned our fowardline into a joke and now our backline is look as bad as ever.

Thing is, they will still have to pay him out and then pay someone else extra to do the job, they may not boot him purely for financial reasons.

Yep tough call - pay him out even though we probably cant afford too or will it cost the club more long term with lack of attendances etc for the rest of this season if he stays.

Might have to put up with Laidley. We have no one else to turn to this season.

Buttifant should go as well. Our players run like they are playing for country footy 3rd's teams.

I think Mick has the wrong people around him, to mae it worse, I don't think our assistan coaching staff are that great either

Buttifant should be in the gun big time

Being a mad Aston Villa supporter most of life, this year has tested me beyond belief. The manager we had was a dour Scotsman called Paul Lambert. We played a boring defensive style that sent us to the bottom of the ladder. Our billionaire owner finally lost patience with him and he was sacked. We then hired Tim Sherwood, who has the team playing an exciting style of play. We look like we are going to avoid relegation and we are in the FA cup final against Arsenal at the end of May.

Food for thought?

It's 5-star fine dining for thought.
