At the risk of going off topic, clubs expect and demand loyalty from players yet move them on at the first sign that they are not up to the job and the club can get someone better for the role or something more valuable in exchange. The only difference is the players are traded out where coaches are paid out and administrators sacked.

The only way clubs survive is because members and supporters are loyal to the club rather than individuals and this allows clubs to survive long after individuals have moved on. Ratten WAS our coach in the same way Brittain, Pagan, Barassi, Parkin and Walls were once our coaches. Malthouse IS our coach and therefore deserves the backing of everyone who is a supporter of the club. You can reserve the right to bitch and moan about how he does the job and results achieved as long as the support is there while he is in charge of the playing group. No-one is above criticism while doing their job, however simply denying Malthouse support because you liked the guy before him or disliked the way the board handled his departure is a bit harsh.

Once money was introduced to the game (and that was a long, long time ago) it was always going to be a long slippery slope away from a pure form of the game. This is not a new problem for the game, it it even happens at a local club level where instant success is demanded to keep sponsors involved and the club solvent.

If Ratten was still in charge, supporters would have every right to question why we were 0-3 as the list was of his making, as was the playing style. Once the decision was made that this was not going to provide the success demanded of the club, then a new way had to be found. Malthouse deserves a chance to prove that his way will work and three games is too little evidence to judge him on.

Funny when you get the likes of carey weighin in on the matter. Recons mick needs to change the defensive gameplan, also apparently gave the boys a peptalk, 1st line of the ranks; its not cheating if you dont get caught

harks, I love you like the brother than I never had, but how is any of this any different to Mick and his process?

Very simply Wookie and in fear of repeating myself:

Mick has people skills and Ratten didn't.
There's a big difference in having a formula and then the capacity to administer it. Ratten had a formula but when things went awry so did his composure.
Ratten for his frustrations put his footballing department into argument and disarray and you just can't do that in a team environment.

We really have little idea what will happen on-field this year but from what I have seen, we are re-building the foundation throughout our footballing department.
Mick has also put a heavy focus into the individual and the development of the individual which just wasn't happening last year.
Make every player feel wanted and required, tutor them on an individual level and give them clear messages, may just go some way in making them feel part of the process.
That just wasn't happening last year. It may have got better but then again it may have just got worse.

Too much sense in that, One of the few good blue posters across the forums :):thumbsu:

thats fair enough i guess.

Mick is on a hiding to nothing with this list - the best he can aim for is more competitiveness a good run with injuries and a faster than expected development from players needed in key positions - if this delivers a finals finish - there might be enough in it for members to stay excited. Everything has to go right for Carlton to finish top4 in any of the next two years - I cant see it happening based on KPP stocks as they are.

So what? Embrace the fail of the last ten years- learn from it and move on. Carlton is my team.

Will be interested to see what the team looks like later in the year. Mick is sure to keep shaking up some areas of his game plan

Harks tied for poster of the year so he's a decent egg.

The rest of you though ... I think you were just insulted.

Hoo raa, 40Year's back in town.

My friends,
Grab a cigar, a ballon of brandy, slip on the smoking jacket, sit back and enjoy the read.

Happy Happy Joy Joy :)

If you need something stronger, I know this bloke, I can give you his Numb3r(s).

I really don't think Mick would have taken on the job if he didn't feel the list was capable of delivering a premiership under his tenure.

Yes this is a baseless post, but I just can't see the caliber of Mick and Judd having their careers finish on a whimper. I think we're headed for a pretty special moment.

I agree 100%

If long term rebuilding was Mick's main game, then he probably would have taken on other clubs such as Melbourne. I take from this that Mick sees our list as capable of reaching the top echelons during his tenure which is currently three years.

2 years. We dont honor last years of contracts, in fact we make it so the second last year of a contract is near useless too with rumours, board leaks and Management that issue ambiguous statements in order to further feed the media beast. The way I see it, MM must have thought, like many of us did, that we already have a flag ready team and he could win one in his first year. Anything less and MM knew that the moneymen would be on the phone to Wiltshire to see what the new models felt like in the hand.

We?

Too often poor performance last year was blamed on Ratten not the players.

Happy with the way Mick is going but tbh alot of the moves had already been done by Ratten (ie playing Yarran forward, Gibbs moved back to defence last week, Armfield defensive forward, Hampson @ FF).

Its just with Mick in charge the focus when we lose now is more on the playing list. As it should be!!!!

It's a shame we can't talk about Malthouse without bringing Ratten into play.
Whether we like it or not Ratten is now a Hawthorn coach so we best get used to that idea.

Anyway, Malthouse is not in a position to hurry anything and I can see already that he's building a team and an ethic we

Love the fact he's not using Judd as a Mr. Fixit also.
He's preparing us for life post Judd and has put it onto the other mids to stand up.
So far they haven't quite been brilliant but there is a build going on.

Murphy hasn't yet hit top form and is only starting to fit into his new responsibilities.
Carrazzo started off slow and is just starting to show up prominently again, even given his stopping duties.
Simpson was asleep the first few weeks and he is also just starting to find his wheels.
Lucas has being given carte blanche and will be looked at to up the standard from here on in.
Robinson has been good even though the stats may not suggest so, but can clearly get much better.

McLean is just a machine so we won't bring him into this. :)

Whichever way though, we're still quite thin on quality mids and the call would be out to "get some" already.
Interesting call on SEN this morning where the caller suggested that the hardest working people at the CFC right now would be the recruiters (McKay included.)
Reckon he may be onto something.

I still think top 4 is there for the taking...

Mick WILL trade for his needs at the end of the season...!
