Only 5 teams in mid gippy thirds. Very worrying. How can a town the size of morwell only field one under 18s side????

This is a HUGE Australia wide problem. Kids would rather sit on snapchat than kick the footy. Number were already declining the last 15 years. Then Covid escalated the decline even further. Morwell East tried to get an Under 18 boys team. Free Membership, Free Boots, Free Jumper and Socks etc and got zero players. Boolarra primary school is currently sitting at 25 kids. It peaked out at close to 200 in the late 80s.

Football has a huge problem. I'm not sure the AFL are funding enough money into grass roots footy to make it flourish either. But biggest problem is mobile telephones imo

As seen in the weekly times, 2024 predictions:

Premier: Newborough
Bolter: Stony Creek
Slider: Tarwin
B&F: Josh Pearce, Newborough

Thoughts?

Long time lurker of the Gippsland forums here.

Premier - I can't see Newborough claiming the flag, seem to have a weaker list than last year and a severe case of the newywobbles.
Thorpy is my prediction with the acquisition of a new look premier midfield Tank Rosato, Leys & Cheppi.

Bolter - Stony

Slider - Morewell East

B&F - Tank Rosato - Thorpy

Newborough's performance left a lot to be desired on Saturdays praccy match at Heyfield. Kicked two goals in the first two minutes and then it was all Heyfield as they ran out about 50 point winners.

Unsure what the biggest upset was over the weekend, west coast pumping freo or newborough running over the top of yinnar who were up by over 5 goals at 3qt.
As a spectator looked to me that the “yizz” caught the “yips”

They responded with a statement win over the reigning premiers Fish Creek. Less than a kick away from a 3-0 start, the Magpies south of Morwell aren’t looking too bad so far.

Think Morwell East have under performed last couple of seasons, seem to have it together this year, big chance.

Still believe Mid Gippy is in big trouble.
With travel, lack of juniors and cost to those prepared to help out behind the scenes at clubs it's a recipe for failure.
Left alone Mid Gippy would've survived.

Don't know what u think is funny about it Jug Head.
All iv'e stated is the obvious.
You've obviously had no involvement in a footy club apart from being a supporter and now keyboard warrior.
Do I want any club or league to fold, no way, especially MG.

Agree sober. As we know mor east will have a crack at north gippy again & hear yinnar possibly spoke to them as well & i know for fact newborough & mirboo have approached ellinbank. Sure mirboo will be rejected on geographical lines not sure about burra although bunyip are gunna have another go at getting in & both wear bulldog jumpers. Alot of resistence from clubs close to bunyip

Sadly I think Mirboo will become part of a very small Alberton League ressurection.
This would leave Boolarra and Thorpy in limbo.
Morwel East, Yinnar, Newborough will leave and you could probably stick a fork in Hill End.

100% correct although id think it bit rude for mirboo to depart now as im led to believe they played a major part in the league amalgamation even though that was under a previous administration

Ellinbank didnt let Bunyip in last year and thats a club with significant history associated with the EDFL.
They voted 0-11 to let Korumburra in a couple of years ago.
There is zero chance that EDFL clubs would vote Mirboo Nth or Newborough in to their league.
When nyora and poowong merge & cantani disappear as is eventually inevitable it will leave 4 games plus a bye each week. They will be looking for strong clubs that can field 4 teams each saturday. Money will only keep clubs afloat so long & no juniors will be their downfall. Get em while you can

Catani are going nowhere. They are only 20 minutes from Pakenham and Cranbourne. They also have 4 junior teams.

Have heard Hill End might be interested in joining EDFL but once again highly unlikely that the EDFL clubs let them in expecially as they dont have junior teams.

Hill End do have juniors, they play in the Central Gippsland junior comp.
