If Andrews could genuinely play as an inside mid in time, he would definitely be worth a shot based on his pace alone.

Of course it's pointless. You watch, most clubs will be looking to exploit it and load up on longer term players (i.e. players that were overlooked last year due to injury form and who have improved this year - e.g. Jordon Butts of last year or players who have come out of nowhere to perform well this season and would be picked up in the draft later on in the year - e.g. Shane McAdam from last year).

It would be a LOT more beneficial to introduce the mid year trade and/or loan period where teams can trade for a player of need from another team's list or simply loan them from other teams until the end of the year. It would work for players and both teams. One team gets the player of need, the other team gets the other club to develop that player and get AFL games into them and get them back (if they want them) at the end of the year.

It makes a lot more sense than a mid-season draft where the player will not be getting games at the AFL club and state league teams receive significant blows along the way.

I don't like the loan idea, but I don't mind the mid season trade.

If the AFL want to make it a thing and get a heap of discussion going I'd do this...

Make this a bye round, any players who have played less than 5 games for the year are eligible for trade.

AFLX carnival for these players across the weekend, draft or trade event mid week.

Probably only really works when clubs can freely move players.
