It shows the effort was mostly there at least. It was accuracy/execution that hurt us. That's probably better than a lack of intensity,

Lobb has stood up and kicked some very important goals for us this year so I don’t want to stick the boot in too hard. That said, I literally can’t recall one contested mark all year. I know it’s not necessarily his forte, but the law of averages say he should clunk the odd one. Given this, his move to the wing seems an odd choice. He’s a pretty cumbersome and ineffective player the way we’ve got him engaged.
He had one last night in the middle of Witts & Marra which was a pretty good grab.

Thanks. I remembered that just after I posted that and found it.

I thought GCs pressure would have been higher than ours. It looked that way to me. I wonder whether the rating itself reflects effort or efficiency. Either way, way, it appears we were consistent bar the 3rd qtr.

Bailey Smith kind of went from hero to villian in the space of 7 days. A very low individual pressure rating and didn't lay a single effective tackle. We could have done with a couple on Rowell at different times. I suppose his progress won't be linear, however, so we nurture, encourage and persist.

We won't be the last club that Rowell does this to all season. Like Butters and Jason Horne Francis earlier this year, both those players won the game for Port against us and have since won other games for Port.

Issue is that we firstly didn't build enough of a lead - we were 20 points up but should have carried that lead into QT at least - and structure some issues in the 1H. Bevo made some good adjustments at HT but you're chasing the game from behind and have to look at the upside of winning clearances, not shutting down the opposition, in order to mount a comeback. That allowed Rowell to play a BOG game.

Yeah a really bad night after three very good weeks. Expecting a bounce back from him next week.

Serious question for you.

When Ryan puts his fist up and knocks the ball away from the marking contest but directly to a member of the opposition, is it still being classed as an effective spoil?
Does he also get an effective spoil when he spoils English and Jones. His spoil preventing TIm holding the Mark was elite, an no GC players were close.

We need to switch to playing more of a territory game as the night wore on. Gold Coast did, but we still played dry weather football which only a few players could handle in those humid conditions.

Even playing relatively poorly for a huge chunk of the game, we win if we kick straight. Marra has improved every aspect of his game markedly, except his goal-kicking has gone backwards from his draft year. It's now a real concern.

TOB just isn't the answer as that third interceptor, Buss & JOD (who shows real promise) are too raw but it might be time to fast track one of them in that role. JOD kicks surprisingly well.

If we had another crafty/specialist forward (e.g. Lohmann) we probably win that too. McNeill battled but is a small inside/outside mid shoehorned into a forward role. Very few players actually start as mids and make that transition well - Scott does ok, and Riley Garcia has shown signs at time.
This.

Our players were running full pelt towards the ball carrier. This gave no margin for error, even if the kick was straight as most of them slipped through the hands.

GC were leading diagonal or away from the ball carrier which meant even if the contest was halved, they were still in it with the ball heading in the direction.

One moment that stood out to me was late in the 3rd when Naughton was giving the right lead into the pocket (away from the ball carrier), with a worst case scenario a f50 throw in, then stopped, turned and led back towards them at full pelt and coughed it up.

Percentage of kicks inside 50 that landed 30+ metres from goal...

WB: 83%
GC: 58%

Far too many shallow entries from us.
For context, do you have competition averages for this?

Observations.
1)Why we keep bombing the ball high into the fwd line is mind blowing. Where is our system

2) juh well done.
Ballard and Collins have kept Aaron quiet for the last few games.
Cheers
Stephen

As is always the case if 6 to 8 of your best 10 to 12 players don't have good games you struggle to win.

L Jones, Macrea and Daniel did. Others that got a bit of the footy either had poor disposals or poor decision making either costing us goals their end or missing goals our end.

We spend a lot of time here discussing fringe players and role players when really our better players execute last night and we win comfortably.

Anyone who has been watching the VFL this year would know there was no one there that would has given us a better opportunity last night.

We have to hope, like the good and senior players at Collingwood ours learn from last night and get back Into the season

The team has effectively followed that philosophy for the majority of this century, and we have been moderately successful in doing so. Because up to a point you are right, team results are typically dominated by the performance of a team's best players, and so long as they play well and the rest of the team play appropriate supporting roles, you can win. The problem is that the load eventually becomes too much to carry for our best players, who really have been super consistent over extended periods of time.

You can carry passengers for a while but it's a tough competition and our opponents are able to design strategies that will sometimes be quite effective against us. We need supporting players who can reliably step up when our best players are down on form or being well held.

We need to expect more from our fringe players, not less.

Had our forwards kicked straighter, and our mids used the ball more effectively, would we have likely have won last night's game? Sure, but they didn't so it was one of those rare occasions when our fringe players needed to step up to help us get over the line. They weren't able to do so, which is a problem we need to address.

Being the masochist that I am, I've rewatched a few moments from last night's game. Lukosius's third goal, which came after an O'Brien skill error, was the lowlight for me. How can you spray a fifteen metre pass from a standing start to a teammate in the clear, under absolutely no pressure? That turnover and goal against us with four minutes to go in the second quarter was utterly deflating.

He is a backman. He started as a backman and should be CHB. I’ll never stop saying this. It is the difference between us being top 4 and alsorans every year

The mere thought of Naughty regularly having the ball in hand in our defensive 50 has me breaking out in a cold sweat.

Do you have any data around expected scores? I do feel like JUH marks a lot of footy around the 50m line on toughish angles.

Sadly I haven't got anything from CD except for team expected scores but Liam Crow has an expected score model online where you can see the expected score for each individual shot, it's pretty close to the CD model although things like left/right foot, pressure on kick are missing.

4 of his 5 came from direct turnovers from Dale, L. Jones, O'Brien and Richards, he was matched up on these players during the match...

13 mins was more than enough time for JOD to be on him. Could have got uglier...if that's possible. Jones wasn't a good match for him. Gardner played him best it seems.
