Mitchell Johnson - Finished?

Was just thinking about this earlier today when I saw a report he had signed to play with Durham in England's t20 competition.

This thread is aimed at his test career. He has definitely slipped down the pecking order. Players that can be considered 'ahead' of him for a spot are:

Siddle
Harris
Hilfenhaus
Cummins
Pattinson
Starc (Left hander)

His only saving grace is potentially his batting, but even then most of the guys above have shown they can stick around and score a handy 30ish.

He was also out of form for a significant amount of time before his toe injury. So, my question. Will we see Mitch wear the baggy green again?

I'd like to think not.

The problem with Johnson is that he is marketable, and he appeals to women and kids. Cricket Australia prefer players like this.

But on pure selection principals, he should never play tests again.

More than happy to see him in the one dayers and 20-20s though.

Will play ODI cricket again without a shadow of a doubt IMO. Might play T20 cricket again especially if he dominates in the IPL and his stint at county cricket. Can't see him playing test cricket again unless injuries strike and he is taking big wickets in the shield. Only 31 and a very fit player.

This thread is purely in regards to his test career. As for the post above^ that is very true. As soon as he got injured I thought it was a good thing for the team (obviously not wishing injury on anybody)

I don't think his Test Career is finished by any means, time away can do wonders and let's not forget that bowlers tend to come and go. If he was in form and there was a spot you would definately consider him.

It's a big "if" but I doubt there are any lines thru his name just yet.

In ODI's although he hasnt played for ages he's still ranked our highest bowler (when I last checked a few weeks ago). Almost got the ODI Allan Border medal too. He'll be straight back into the ODI team I think.

But for tests - think that could be it.

Which is good for WA winning a shield!

Still if a 30 year old international bowler needs to be babied through every test(as johnson seems to need) then you have to wonder what the point is.

Mitch always seemed to have an excuse at hand and two more in his pocket about why he was serving up filth in vital test matches.

he was often referred to as our strike bowler and yet he seemed incapable of taking responsibility for his own game what sort of leader of an attack blames everybody else for their own failures?

Looking at it at the moment, you'd have to say definitely not.
Our bowling attack is looking very strong, with great younger bowlers coming through as well who the selectors would be eye-balling for test positions.

That, and the fact that he was in terrible form before he got injured. If he was in good form, even then, you'd have to wonder how'd he go with the guys we have in now.

However, if he plays well in first-class cricket, and if our bowlers have a dip in form, which are all possible, and Australia start losing, then I would not be surprised if the masses start appealing for Johnson's inclusion again, given his 'strike-power' and ability to 'turn a game'.

But to sum up, I don't think he'll play test cricket again.

At first I thought that it was one of 'those' injuries which allows the selectors to avoid selecting someone for a game and hope his replacement bowls well.

I love Mitchell Johnson but he is just too inconsistent.

One day he will be devastating, then the next he will be bowling pies. Im pretty sure the majority love him when he is in form-bat and ball...it's great to watch.

I think we have better option s now but hope we see him back in the international scene...even if it is the one dayers.

Probably a premature call but I get the feeling that he's played his last test, on the wrong side of 30 as well. I'd expect to see him play in the ODI's though.

This would be close to the most accurate thing I've ever read on BF.

I can't believe I didn't see it earlier, though it could be that I vomit til my eyes water every time I see the spud's name mentioned.

he was finished in test cricket a year before he got injured, scary thing is without that injury he would have played and struggled through the tests last summer.

That's not true, he would've struggled up until the perth test, destroyed India and taken 14 wickets for the match, and then return to struggling for the remainder of the series.
