The trade deadline is at the end of the month (after the All-Star Game and the MLB draft) and things are starting to percolate as the teams try to work out where they stand in terms of making the post-season.

The Cincinnati Reds signed 2B/LF Tony Kemp to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Louisville. Kemp was long a mainstay with the Oakland Athletics but left in the off-season. He joined the Reds on a non-roster contract back in February 2024 and played eight Spring Training games but was granted his release after being informed he would not make the major league roster. A week after being released by the Reds, Kemp signed a major league deal with the Orioles and appeared in five games but was designated for assignment to create roster space for Jackson Holliday. Kemp subsequently signed with the Twins on a minor league deal and played 46 games for their Triple-A affiliate, hitting .279/.358/.436, but was not called up to the big leagues. He opted out of that deal last week and returned to free agency.

Kemp does not have an immediate path to playing time with the Reds at second base, with Jonathan India being scorching hot through the month of June as the Reds' lead-off hitter. Although India will not play in today's game thanks to a left knee contusion, he is not expected to miss significant time, meaning that Kemp will likely have to play left field if he is to play in the majors for the Reds.

The New York Mets have acquired RHP Phil Maton from the Tampa Bay Rays for either a player to be named later or cash considerations. The Mets designated LHP Joey Lucchesi for assignment to create roster space for Maton. The Rays recalled RHP Manuel Rodriguez to fill the space left by Maton's trade.

The Rays signed Maton as a free agent in the off-season, signing the former Astro to a one-year, $6.5 million contract, in the form of a $6.25 million base salary plus a $250,000 buyout on a $7.75 million club option for 2025. Maton pitched 35 1/3 innings for the Rays, with a 4.58 ERA.

The San Francisco Giants announced a number of roster moves overnight. The Giants reinstated LHP Blake Snell and INFs Wilmer Flores and Thairo Estrada from the IL. A roster spot had been opened up when the Giants traded OF Austin Slater to the Reds. The Giants optioned LHP Kolton Ingram to Triple-A and designated shortstop Nick Ahmed for assignment.

In the meantime, the Dodgers put RHP Tyler Glasnow on the IL with lower back tightness. The Dodgers filled his roster spot with RHP Michael Peterson. The Dodgers are optimistic that Glasnow will be back in action after the All-Star break.

The Boston Red Sox acquired RHP Trey Wingenter from the Tigers over the weekend, and they promoted him to the major league roster in accordance with an assignment clause in his contract. The Red Sox optioned LHP Cam Booser to Triple-A and designated RHP Naoyuki Uwasawa for assignment. The Red Sox also designated utility player Enmanuel Valdez and recalled infielder/outfielder Jamie Westbrook.

Uwasawa was signed by the Rays out of the NPB in the off-season. He was not going to make the Rays' major league roster but had an upward mobility clause in his contract, requiring the Rays to trade him if any other club was prepared to offer him a joar league roster spot. The Red Sox sent cash to the Rays to do the deal.

The Phillies reinstated 1B Bryce Harper and DH Kyle Schwarber from the IL and optioned Kody Clemens to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and designated OF David Dahl for assignment.

The Miami Marlins signed RHP Adam Oller to a minor league contract, and he will likely be sent to Triple-A Jacksonville in the near future. Oller has previously pitched for the Guardians and the Athletics in his major league career without much success.

In the meantime, the last-placed Marlins are open to trading away centre fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr and are likely to see multiple relievers get traded before the deadline. However, it seems that the Marlins are not likely to trade away LHP Jesus Luzardo until he is fully healthy, which defers a trade for him until the off-season at the earliest. The Marlins are also not likely to trade Bryan De La Cruz or Jesus Sanchez, despite interest in De La Cruz.

The Washington Nationals have an outside shot at making the playoffs this year but seem to be approaching the deadline as sellers rather than buyers, according to reports. Washington will be open to trades for both potential free agents and players controlled until the end of the 2025 season, according to the report. This suggests that the Nationals will likely be sellers on OF Jesse Winker, LHP Patrick Corbin, RHP Dylan Floro, OF Joey Gallo and RHP Trevor Williams (currently injured). There would likely also be interest on OF Lane Thomas, RHP Hunter Harvey and RHP Kyle Finnegan, who are all under team control until the end of the 2025 season. The Nationals have lost 11 of their last 15 games to go seven games under .500 in the NL East, and they are 5.5 games outside the third wildcard spot in the NL with six teams ahead of them in order to jump into the wild card.

The Atlanta Braves have selected OF Eddie Rosario to their major league roster, and also recalled RHP Bryce Elder. The Braves created roster space by optioning reliever Dylan Lee and utility player Luke Williams in corresponding moves. The Braves also designated outfielder J.P. Martinez to create a roster spot for Rosario, who will now play in his fourth straight season with the Braves, with Atlanta having traded for him before the 2021 deadline. He signed a two-year contract extension with the Braves that contained a $9 million club option for 2024. Unfortunately for Rosario, he could not match the dizzying heights of his 2021 season with the Braves and Atlanta declined their option over him for 2024. Rosario signed a minor league contract with the Nationals in the off-season and had an up and down first half of the season with Washington before being released by the Nationals when they called up James Wood. Atlanta signed Rosario to a minor league contract last week and he played three games at Triple-A before being recalled to the major league roster.

My daughter went to Oracle Park today for her first ever MLB game. Haven't had a call from her yet so I hope she survived wearing her A's shirt to a Giants game!

Anyway, sounded like an exciting game with the Giants winning in the bottom of the 9th on a wild throw

The Toronto Blue Jays have put CF Kevin Kiermaier on waivers, in the hope that another team will claim him and take on the remainder of his salary. Kiermaier remains on the Blue Jays' 40-man roster and can continue playing for Toronto while he is available on waivers. If he clears waivers, the Blue Jays can outright him or release him, but they could also wind up retaining Kiermaier.

It's unlikely that another team will claim Kiermaier. He signed a 1 year, $10.5 million salary with Toronto in the off-season and is owed $4.5 million over the remainder of the season, but is batting just .183/.232/.290 so far this season. The Blue Jays are 42-50 and 8.5 games out of a wild card spot in the AL, with just a 2% chance of making the playoffs.

According to RosterResource and Cot's Baseball Contracts, the Blue Jays are approximately $10 million over the threshold for paying luxury tax, so if they were to see Kiermaier depart, then that would get them half the way there to avoiding luxury tax for next season, although the Blue Jays are on pace to be a second-time payer of the luxury tax and therefore are required to pay a base tax of 30% on spending over the line.

The Baltimore Orioles have strengthened the depth in their bullpen by acquiring RHP Colin Selby from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for cash considerations after the Royals recently designated Selby for assignment. The Orioles put RHP Kyle Bradish on the 60-day IL to open a spot for Selby on the 40-man roster, but he will go to Triple-A Norfolk when he reports. Selby pitched in just three major league innings for the Royals this season, allowing two earned runs in the process. The Royals acquired Selby from the Pirates in April, in exchange for LHP Connor Oliver, after Selby pitched 24 innings for the Pirates in 2023. Selby has had trouble with run prevention, giving up 26 earned runs in 27 major league innings with the Pirates and Royals.

The Chicago Cubs quietly signed OF Trayce Thompson to a minor league deal and he's playing with the Cubs' Triple-A club Des Moines, going 1-4 with two runs scored in his first game. Thompson was released by the New York Mets after playing 62 games with their Triple-A affiliate Syracuse. Thompson is in his second time around with the Cubs, having played for Chicago in 2021. He has also played for the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland Athletics and San Diego Padres, accruing 369 games and 1058 plate appearances, for a career .212/.300/.411 batting line.

List of draft-eligible Australians, per Baseball Australia

  • Travis Bazzana, Oregon State University, infielder
  • Blake Cavill, Western Kentucky, infielder
  • Brent Iredale, New Mexico Junior College, infielder (transferring to Arkansas University for 2025 season, so could return to college)
  • Chase Diggins, Kansas University, infielder (likely to return to college)
  • Jimmy Nati, Stanford, infielder (likely to return to college)
  • Kailen Hamson, Cumberland University, left-handed pitcher
  • Keenan Spence, Purdue, outfielder (eligible to return to college for another season)
  • Zak Skinner, Lamar University, catcher
  • Cayden Nicoletto, Columbia (transferring to Missouri University for 2025 season, so could return to college)

According to the NY Post, the New York Yankees are considering acquiring Jazz Chisholm Jr from the Marlins, but it is not clear whether the Yankees have opened discussions with the Marlins over the terms of any trade. It does appear, however, that Chisholm is likely to be traded before the deadline, with Miami committed to a rebuild of their roster (which commenced earlier in the year when the Marlins traded Luis Arraez to San Diego). The Marlins were probably looking to deal from their pitching depth, but a series of injuries have limited their capacity to trade away pitchers.

The Colorado Rockies are likely to trade away 2023 All-Star Game MVP catcher Elias Diaz before the trade deadline, according to the New York Post. He's likely to be the second veteran catcher on the move with the Blue Jays likely to trade Danny Jansen. Diaz is a free agent at the end of the season and the Rockies have not discussed the terms of an extension with the 33 year old. Diaz is not a qualifying offer candidate, so the Rockies would face losing him for nothing should he depart in free agency after the season. Diaz is not a top calibre rental, so is unlikely to return any of the top prospects to Colorado, but he has played well enough to get a mid-level prospect or two should the Rockies trade him before the deadline. He is hitting .296/.340/.417 which is approximately league average as measured by wRC+, taking into account the hitter-friendly home field of Coors Park in which Diaz plays.
