Round 22 vs Collingwood 1993. Win we play finals.

The lines to get into the stadium 2 hours before the match were 300 to 400 metres long.

He would have filled the joint hours before the match.
I've still never been in an atmosphere quite like that game. the last quarter was insane

that was my first ever crows game, we took the bus down from the Barossa and got to the game about an hour before it started. we had to stand the entire game where the crows race at aami later became, along with a few hundred others

if there was only 48.5k at that game, i'll eat my hat. theres rumours around that there was closer to 52-53k for it

Went to that game. Was awesome. Our first quarter wasn't flash. But then it kicked into gear. The bar on the eastern wing was rabid with magpie support.

There have been rumours of the SANFL crowd fudging since 1991. They would (allegedly) remove 12 to 15% of the crowd figure as they would then have to pay the AFL less on tickets sold.

Dennis Cometti's quote from today's Advertiser is interesting:

Question: Who have you enjoyed calling the most?

Answer: Tony Modra was the most exciting player I've called. Certainly not the best but when he was on some of those days and nights at Footy Park were magic. By the same token, I've never seen a player so good above his head but so poor below his knees.

Poor below his knees? Obviously hasn't watched the highlights video lol.

He probably means picking it up. Which is probably why he "soccered" so many ridiculous goals !!

Played against Mods back in my South days. At Richmond in a pre season game (Escort Cupo_O). I was in the forward line on Tony Burgess, and Mods on the HHF for West. Specky after specky after specky. I asked Burgess who the hell is this bloke. His answer, "dunno, some kid they got from the Riverland".:$:D

Could just tell he was going to be a star and was wasting his time in the SANFL.

Didnt mind a beer at the Grand back then either:D:thumbsu:

"We're in the finals!"

I was in high school when Modra hit the scene.
In the 90s the recession was really tough on the state. The state bank collapse etc.
So when Mods took off he gave the whole state something to get enjoyment from, and something to have state pride in.
The Crows were big, but he was bigger than the club.
He was as big as the Beatles here.

Modra was... Like nothing words could explain. We had such a chip on our shoulders as a state, a big inferiority complex and this whole crows thing wasn't going like we hoped. State of origin was no more and we were a bit lost. We needed a hero.

And then one comes along

That can never really happen again because of the national comp: that need, that hunger, a century of resentment Can't happen.

But he was that good. The videos don't lie. The crowd was electric

That Collingwood game is one of the most vivid memories of my childhood - just before my 7th birthday.

Standing in line outside Footy Park for what felt like (and probably was) hours before the gates opened. It was bloody hot. Sitting on the Eastern wing. Disaster of a first quarter, then in the second quarter Mods takes that incredible grab on the lead and goes back and slots it. Suddenly it was all one way traffic the other way.

We were there with a bloke my dad worked with, and his wife. She was a bit of a mad cat. Half way through the last quarter she started yelling out "we're in the finals"...and next thing, the whole stadium has joined in. We dropped out of touch a bit after that but bumped into them again completely at random outside the MCG after one of the GFs and I remember this woman picking up my mum and swinging her around 360 in a hug...

Just magic. Those moments footy give you. All too rarely, but it's what keeps you coming back.

His marking ability was out of this world, and a real sight to behold when you saw it up close.

And not just the speccy. He was almost impossible to spoil on the lead. He took a lot of marks on the lead even when the full back was all over him like a cheap suit.

If you were around the right games Waikerie/Renmark etc you would have been fortunate enough to meet Roo/Modra etc. I remember watching Renmark as a kid and seeing Rick Modra drop the ball behind his back and do a back kick for a goal. It was pretty widely known that he was probably above the A grade level of the Riverland league. Good memories.
