Most popular AFL player by merch sales

Would be interesting to see where the Collingwood players fit into this. Big following with quite a few marketable stars. No doubt they'd have at least a couple in the top 10.

The O.P said Dane Swan was our most marketable player, but I am sure I read somewhere that Dale Thomas sold the most merchandise and in 2007 he sold as many as Buckley

It would be more useful to include the amounts of personalised gear each store actually stocks..for example buddy might sell the most gear because there is a franklin hat, badge, kids shirt, adult tshirt(s), footy etc but another player might only have a shirt and badge. Check out the hawks shop - they have quite a bit of cyril and buddy gear while say the geelong store might only have a bartel tshirt and badge.
Obviously Hawks have identified that he is a standout player and there is the demand from the fans, but this story would be more accurate/valuable if all the players had the same gear out there that could be assessed against one another, or if they gave an indication to the percentage of overall sales
Well, of course, it goes without saying that not every player is going to get their own line of merchandise and branding, nor will they be able to back that up with actual marketability and sales. Wouldn't we all love a Raph Clarke jumper?

It just so happens that while other clubs have a player equivalent to Sam Mitchell on their list, or even Luke Hodge(who themselves will go down as greats of the club), we also have two players who shine a little bit brighter in the public and football eye in Rioli and Franklin. Whether they get people through the gates, buying memberships, or buying merch, we're a bit blessed to have them both.

The trouble with the OP is the assumption that the number on the jumper refers to the player wearing it at the moment. The Number 7 on the back of my Geelong Jumper is more for Paul Couch and Ben Graham than it is for Harry Taylor.

Players should get a cut of their own jumper sales outside of the cap. Franklin has become a brand, and if he is selling twice as many jumpers as anyone else he deserves some $$$.

From the AFL website...
HAWTHORN superstar Lance Franklin sells more than double the merchandise of any other AFL player via online shopping, cementing his position as the biggest name in the game.

finally!
I hope these sales stats can now highlight why he also happens to be the most overrated player of all time and a major reason why he is given a very good run from umpires and the media across the whole board.
The very fact he draws so much money for the AFL, it's no surprise their were conspiracies theories halfway through this season in regards to his health.

As for his football, 2008 is all but a shadow memory of what his best was and he has rarely emulated anything close to this since but as long as he continues to be lauded upon by his media counterparts (notably Dermott, Dunstall, Lynch, Crawford) then he will continue to be given an arm chair ride into the All Australian squads and top 10 lists despite the obvious fade of his football since 2008.

If the number is on a new jumper it is for the current player
Number 4 on a new Swans Jersey will always look like Hanners and never like Plugger

OT - The AFL really need to release retro jumpers complete with original sponsors similar to the NRL ones

makes you wonder how Franklin's merchandise sales would have rated had he played against Carey, Modra, Matera, Ablett, Lockett, Dunstall, Koutafides, Hird, Voss etc, etc ;)

mate i wasnt having a go at hawthorn or the players, i think i said that hawthorn have obviously identified the marketability of their players and im not saying its unfair that others (including raph clarke) don't have a heap of individual gear. I was just suggesting that the article could have gone one step further and provided more valuable information in relation to this topic, whether it be percentages of total sales or what, but forgive me as it seems a little obvious that the stars (because all of those guys are champs who are all marketable) with the most personalised gear available would sell the most stuff :thumbsu:
probs just my history with research and statistics making me think what else could they have told us..

nahh I can understand the Rioli logic as he produces glimpses of breathtaking football, football that is on level terms with the greatest to ever play the game but he only shows it for 5 minutes every 3rd or 4th game (if that) but it's enough to draw the kids in and have them in awe whereas Franklin....never taken a screamer, never soccered a goal off the ground to kick one of the freak goals of the year, apart from his ability to run like a midfielder at full speed being 6ft'5 and his ability to bend a ball like Beckham from 60 metres out...his best is quite average in comparison to Rioli's best and you and very other Hawthorn supporter would agree

There's certainly a lot of that at Collingwood too. Some old great numbers I often see, eg I think Burnsy or Beams? The list goes on. I can normally work out the number 35 though :)

Take away any players best attributes and their best will look quite average

It was obvious Franklin was going to be number one, even before opening the thread. He is easily the most marketable player in the AFL.

2011 was his best season, but you might have missed it behind all that hate

You could get carded for saying that, how many threads have you created on the Bay over the last year in regards to Ablett snr or Geelong? ;)
I sense hypocrisy at it's best.

Er what? I dont think I've posted on 'the bay' more than half a dozen times in the past few years... Let alone make a thread.

Swing and miss there chops.
