Number 1.

Until Ray Shaw in 79 I think it was decided he would keep his own number 23 when he was appointed Captain of Collingwood ALL Collingwood Captains switched to the number 1.

The stats don't lie about Collingwood Finals dominance up until the early 90's so Collingwood must have had some great champions wearing that number 1 jumper.

I was thinking that modern day with blokes like Judd, O'Keefe running around in it.

Would number 1 be it, purely because it used to be the captain's number?

I'm thinking more like memorable players e.g Lockett, Jesaulenko, Dunstall, Ablett, Carey etc. and which, if any number, any of those big players had in common.

i say 5 - ablett, hird, judd, buckley etc.

Judd played his best football by far with the number 3 on his back. Only had 5 for 1 season.

Does any one know if and other great player aide from Don Scott, Dermott Brereton, Buddy have worn 23 that is a rather prolific number at Hawthorn.

Andrew McLeod and Stewart Loewe both wear/wore #23. It is a rather famous world sport number with MJ, Beckham, Warney and LeBron James all wearing it.

It will probably become one of the most worn numbers going forward because of MJ's worldwide appeal and respect.

Maybe you should do some statistics on that? Seriously, who give's crap about this....do you have a life?

Maybe i should check all the eggs i've bought in the last year and determine whether or not the diameter was consistent enough for them to be sold as 'large eggs.'

Productivity is subjective i guess (i can talk, i'm replying to some pointless thread about player numbers.)

I think that Collingwood only started giving the number 1 to their captains in the late 1950s. Prior to that Collingwood would list their players alphabetically and the numbers were assigned down the list. I remember reading an article which said that Bruce Andrew was often given 1, but there were some seasons when he wore 2, while Gordon Coventry hardly ever played three consecutive seasons with the same number.

I find it interesting to think about... If I have so little a life for coming up with the topic what does that say about you, replying to a topic you see such little point in?

Although I see the general idea of this thread, when you think deeply about it, every number has its champions. As a general rule the lower numbers are more prestigious and go to better players in seniors but at junior level, the lower numbers go to the smaller players and nearly always the best players will be much bigger than everyone else hence a larger number.

Pointless argument really.

Yeah but Jordan McMahon also wore it and that de-values it quite significantly.
