Most underrated/overrated players in the comp!!

I'm surpised you didn't have something to say about Rutten as well as the other FB who might be compared to Scarlett.
Fletcher has played a different role over the last few years rather than going one on one with the Key forwards. He has significantly more of the ball than most defenders and his efficiency is one of the highest in the AFL - and that is often over 60 metres.

I really don't have much to say about Ben Rutten because I can't get a clear understanding of how good or bad he is. He is always 2nd or 3rd for goals conceded which is outstanding, but he plays in a team who's flooding tactics are paramount and his job is made much easier than most FB's. He never has to do much like spoil or rebound because they guys around him do it for him.

I understand Fletcher's role, and I think him playing that role is probably what is best for Essendon nowdays, all I'm saying is, that role needs to be put into context. He is no longer one of the elite FB'S (over his career he will be remembered as such, but right now he isn't) and alot of what he does is playing loose and collecting loose possessions. Uh... you are aware that goals kicked in finals don't count towards the Coleman medal right?

Pavlich was second in the 2007 Coleman.

Since moving to CHF from CHB at end of 04 has averaged 18 disposals, over 8 marks, around 3 goals, and around .7 brownlow votes a game. These stats have held up if the team has made the 8 or not made the 8.

Can play back, forward or midfield (pinch hitter).

But yes so over rated it is not funny.

Pavlich is nowhere near overrated. To won AA selections as a FB, and then as a CHF is just incredible.

Controversial I know, but Robert Harvey has always been underrated in my mind. he's a dual brownlow medalist but is never talked about amongst the champions like Buckly, Hird and Voss, even Ricciuto. I know everyone beleives he is a champion, but at his peak he was as good as any. Not to mention he's still going and going well. A champion who should be rated amongst Buckley, Hird and Voss.

It's funny that what we perceive to be overated or inderated is 99% generated by the media, the same media we ridicule on a daily basis and let's face it we often wonder how they continue employement. So the question is too tough to answer legitimately

I have one player that I think is so overrated is not funny and this is M Pavlich. Yeah sure he kicks his bags but its when the team is not in contention. People continually put him in the all australian team but for what ??

In my opinion, Harvey is not VIEWED as a match winner. The likes of Bucks, Hird and Voss were.

Buddy is so overrated that when opposition coaches/teams face Hawthorn Buddy is one of the first players that they consider/analyse. Players who get double and triple teamed in a game cannot be overrated! This tells me that the experts don't overrate Buddy.

Some people seem to have trouble comprehending what the term 'overrated' means. It simply means that their hype is > their output on the field. Saying someone is 'overrated' doesn't mean that they're rubbish, it simply means people often rate them higher than what their actual worth is.

So Buddy's output on the field in warranting two or three opponenets, is this overrating or underrating a player? I think its a sign of where he is rated compared to other players in the competition.

This thread is getting a little boring, as it just turns into a wankfest of "everyone on all the other teams are overrated, and everyone on my team is underrrated". So lets try taking the bias out of the equation and answer the following:

Who is the most overrated player on your team?

Please remember that by overrated, it is all about whose hype exceeds their performance.

I'll kick off with Geelong:

I am going to be absolutely howled down by Cats fans for saying this, but over the past 12 months, I would say that Chapman's perfomances have been less than what people actually give him credit for. Now, I love Chappy. I love the way he goes about it, and he is one of my absolute favourites, but injuries have significantly affected his performance over the last 12 months. 2005-2006 he was probably our best player, and I think people perceive that he is performing at that level still. Due to injuries, he is not playing as well as he did in 2005-2006. In fact, he is probably the only player at Geelong who has gone backwards over the past 2 years.

I have absolute faith that Chappy will get his body right and again be the champion we know he can be. But right now, he is a little overrated when you compare CURRENT performance with his reputation.

The most overrated from the saints, IMO is Michael Gardiner. I know many will disagree but I beleive he has been talked up over the last year and a half and has done little. I know he's been injured and is spectacular at the top of his game, but he hasn't got there yet. hes played a couple this year and there is plenty of people saying he's the reason the saints are winning, but I rate King above him at the moment. I dont doubt that he will be great for us this season, but he has a long way to go before he gets there and is overrated at this CURRENT time. I know he'll live up to it eventually though

Way over-hyped, struggles to handle a tag, just my opinion.

This could be a controversial one but i left one name out on my list who i think is overrated, Adam Goodes. Very good player, just nowhere near a dual brownlow medalist.

I don't think because they can't handle a tag that they should be overrated. When ever the balls in his hands he's brilliant.
