I'm surpised you didn't have something to say about Rutten as well as the other FB who might be compared to Scarlett.
Fletcher has played a different role over the last few years rather than going one on one with the Key forwards. He has significantly more of the ball than most defenders and his efficiency is one of the highest in the AFL - and that is often over 60 metres.
I really don't have much to say about Ben Rutten because I can't get a clear understanding of how good or bad he is. He is always 2nd or 3rd for goals conceded which is outstanding, but he plays in a team who's flooding tactics are paramount and his job is made much easier than most FB's. He never has to do much like spoil or rebound because they guys around him do it for him.
I understand Fletcher's role, and I think him playing that role is probably what is best for Essendon nowdays, all I'm saying is, that role needs to be put into context. He is no longer one of the elite FB'S (over his career he will be remembered as such, but right now he isn't) and alot of what he does is playing loose and collecting loose possessions. He does these things with lethal proficiency, but playing in such a way does not warrant him being held in such esteem as he is by the likes of Mike Sheehan IMHO, but many will feel differently.
