Re: Murray Football League - Part 3

Fair points their hirdy, obviously James Marks had a bit to do with getting him interested in the first place. Agree with your thoughts on Mooroopna's comments. They have been playing and paying Melbourne based players over the past few years and how do you think they beat half a dozen other GV clubs for Brad Campbell's services in the first place!! Tongala certainly hasn't been immune to it before my time at the club.

Anyway makes for an interesting year with Cobram, Toc and Deni all pushing to get into the six and probably in Toc's case much higher. Would think all sides that finished in the Top 6 last year barring maybe Nathalia(wouldnt write them off just yet though) will be aiming to play off again. Some are writing Moama off but I reckon they will still be in the mix.

So how about people's Top 6 just over two weeks out;

Barooga
Tocumwal
Tongala
Numurkah
Cobram
Moama

Rumbalara (no idea on them they could be anywhere from 1-8)
Deni (Couple of big losses, unsure on pick ups)

Moama have lost 10 of the top 40 players in the comp from 08, what makes you think that they will be any where near what they were last year?
There is a reason i havent heard a thing about moama this pre season, they are very quiet!

Re: Murray Football League - Part 3

Pros-
Extra game in Week 1 = more money for clubs
3rd and 4th have an opportunity to earn a double chance
2nd and 3rd may get a double chance in Week 1, but only if 1 beats 4.
1st has a distinct advantage over finishing 2nd in that it is gauranteed a double chance Week 1 and gets to play the 4th best side to get the opportunity to play off in the 2nd semi.
Sides finishing Top 2 don't have the worry of if they win the 2nd Semi, they have only played one game in 3 weeks leading up to the most important game of the season.
Cons-
No advantage of finishing 2nd or 3rd
2nd could go out Week 1 of finals if it loses and 4 beats 1.

Personally I don’t think if you finish second you should get any advantage, im a firm believer that finishing first should get the reward for all the hard work the players, the club, the members and the supporters have done to make it happen. So this system would work for me.

Re: Murray Football League - Part 3

I haven't heard much about Mulwala for a long time. What's been going at the Lion's Den? The clearances have seven departures and five inclusions to the club (four of which are from the O&M league). Can anyone shed some light on how they're going?

agree bx bandit, thats why I think they will win 7 less games this year and finish with 10 and 8, that might be enough to squeeze 6th, they have a few clearances in from the Central Murray league, don't know if they are senior players or not though, you may know more about players up that way.

Re: Murray Football League - Part 3

Have you jumped off your side now that your leaving? I would have thought they would be in the top 3 atleast?
Im unsure of how long it will take for Toc to gel, Numurkah have been training for 6 weeks longer then Toc which is why i had them just in front.
I think the top four will be very tight, with Barooga leading the way from Tonny but then both Toc and Numurkah will be very close behind. Then the next 5 will be tight also with Deni, Cobram, Rumba, Moama and Nathalia fighting for the last couple of spots in the final 6.

Re: Murray Football League - Part 3

Word on the street is will o'sullivan from tongala is going to be league best and fairest. handy rover with unbelievable finesse and vice like hands. some are comparing him to the likes of ablett and judd.

unlucky not to be drafted! keep an eye out for his heavy pockets

Depending on the league, but in this system it's likely teams would rather finish 5th or 6th than 4th.

Realise 5th or 6th playing each other means one of them stay alive for another week, but in my opinion most sides would rather play off for a chance to play in a 2nd Semi a week later, huge incentive even though a loss means the end of their season.
Take last year for example I'm positive Rumba would have put their hand up to take on Moama for a chance to play in a 2nd Semi, rather than play the 5th side (Tongala) and either win and go to a 1st Semi and still sudden death or lose and go out.

Re: Murray Football League - Part 3

A couple of practice matches this weekend between Numurkah and Rochester at Colbinabbin and Echuca United versus Black Rock at Kyabram. Are there any others that people know about?

Hawks play Shep Bears in the ressies and seniors today at Barooga. With the couple of wins in the night series, we'll get another game in next Friday against the old foe, Cobram. Can't believe the following week will see it all kick start for another season!!!!

You blokes will smash Cobram next Friday, they wont go as well as people might have thought this year. They beat Rams by six goals last night but to me they looked a bit to heavy for my liking. We played 13 regular reserve players last night and had six regular senior players out and we were happy with our performance. Cobram were excellent early but slowed down as the game went on and a big ground like ours might be their downfall.

Re: Murray Football League - Part 3

Ky defeated Tonny by 20pts today, Tonny up by 5 pts at 3/4 time but run out of legs in the last and threw in the towel too easily. Turnovers were costly. Had 4 or 5 out two key defenders and two young blokes that will add a bit of run and polish, A Reid only played the first half. Ky would have had a few out also, Josh Vick only played 1st half and Paul Newman last half, as well as any they are getting from Darwin.

In the reserves Tonny won comfortably.

Epping at home next weekend to round out preperations.

Re: Murray Football League - Part 3

Numurkah had a great hit out against Rochester yesterday. were up for awhile but in the 3rd quater when 8 regular twos players came on Rochy got on top. and ended up winning by 5 goals. really good signs across the board with mick laidlaw looking as though he's in for a big year.

also heard Toc have some issues with some Shep swans boys heading back

Re: Murray Football League - Part 3

I played a praccy match with him last week, and he said Toc had failed to find him a job as promised. So looks like he will be heading back.
Dunda was never promised a job, he was actually employed when he signed and became unemployed a few weeks after. A job was never part of the package. He the started to play Shepp Swans and Toc off against each other saying whoever found him a job he would play for. Obviously signing a contract doesnt mean much to some blokes these days.

If its a VCFL contract then it doesn't matter what it might mean to him as that is the only reason you need to not clear someone, if a player is contracted to a club then you don't have to clear them.

I think your correct. If the club hasn't breached their side of the contract and he is still a required player than they don't have to clear a player.

And as for dundas, toquick was right. The job wasn't a part of his contract.
