Player Watch Nathan Freeman

McCarthy quickly proved himself a future champion and Boyd was a lay down misere no 1 draft pick. Freeman was a speedy player with reasonable but not fantastic under 18 form. He has no right to be demanding anything from a club that has nurtured him through 2 years of hamstring problems. If we could get a pick in the top 20 in exchange or a half decent player, he is welcome to go to whatever club is willing to take a risk with his body.

This is one top 10 that Hine badly misread. The fact that we overlooked McCarthy is favour of the 2 players we drafted indicates that Hine is no better judge of talent than any of the other recruiters who chose other players with their early selections.

But he is better than all of those recruiters who overlooked Grundy before pick 18?

Interesting conundrum.

A somewhat interesting article, the part about St Kilda is completely meaningless and they're just trying to add some substance. However "Collingwood remains confident it will re-sign Freeman but has offered the speedy onballer a contract offer in line with its trusted pay scale" adds some intrigue, particularly the bolded which suggests to me that perhaps the agents (Freeman's & Scharenberg's) are arguing that this pay scale should be increased in line with the new broadcast rights.

Snow flakes in hell imo.

Grundy wasn't just overlooked. Others were preferred before him. The two players taken after him indicate that the best of the bigger-bodied mids and KPPs had already gone.Pick 19 was the first of the short people. Given what was left, Grundy was obviously the best available at 18.

So you don't think Grundy is better than any of the 17 taken before him? Or those taken before those 17 in the zone selections GWS were given to build their side?

Its not just Shaz and Freeman. Aish is doing the same to Brisbane.

In fairness to them, Boyd and McCarthy had clubs approach them with stupid offers.
Aish was offered $400k in his first year for an extension. He isn't holding out for more money, he's holding out because he doesn't want to be there.

What rubbish. You can't say Hine misread a draft when his selections haven't had the proper opportunity to display their ability. Recruiters don't have crystal balls, there's no way known anyone could have predicted the injuries these boys picked up.

Grundy was the best talent available well before pick 18.

If Scharenberg leaves after 2 years then it was either pretty poor recruiting or pretty poor systems in place to keep him.

Freeman just simply looks like a miss considering there are several guys taken straight after him who look brilliant.

Clubs don't like to draft ruckman early in the draft. Like a good red wine, rucks notoriously take 4 or 5 years to mature, so its better for other clubs to develop them then trade for them. Besides, why would you draft a ruck when you didn't need one? Clubs draft according to need as well as talent.

He's a required player with elite talent despite his injuries and lack of footy. So much of footy is based on potential which is why we need to get the deal done.

Come on pies stop friggin around....would rather pay overs for Freeman and Berg than give Toovey, Goldsack et al contract upgrades or extensions

Yep, and McCarthy had just broken his leg in the championships. At the time it would have been a risky proposition taking two guys with injury clouds with our first two picks. In hindsight it didn't work like that but taking Freeman was a safer option at the time, we couldn't have known what would happen.

Grundy was the best talent available well before pick 18.
Just to back this up, the top 17 for that draft were (rating according to Grundy)
1. Whitfield (Around Equal)
2. O'rourke (Grundy Ahead)
3. Plowman (Grundy Ahead)
4. Toumpas (Grundy Ahead)
5. Stringer (Stringer Ahead)
6. Macrae (Equal if not Macrae slightly ahead)
7. Wines (Wines Ahead)
8. Mayes (Grundy Ahead)
9. Vlauston (Grundy Ahead)
10. Daniher (Grundy Ahead)
11. Menzel (Grundy Ahead)
12. Jaksch (Grundy Ahead)
13. Lonergan (Grundy Ahead)
14. Corr (Grundy Ahead)
15. Garner (Grundy ahead)
16. Thurlow (Grundy Ahead)
17. Simpson (Grundy Ahead)

He is arguably the 4th to 5th best player in the draft right now on current form over the games he has played, and is in a position where players aren't regarded to be going into their best or in some cases showing anything till they are 24-27 and he is only 21.

you cant call Freeman a miss. no one knows how good he is cause he hasn't been able to play.

This makes sense
Sometimes you do have to pay overs for new colts hen pay nice for players who are good servants but nearing the special aged bracket

Thats a very interrsting way to put it.
Besides Ollie Wines, you are right nothing glaringly better.
Looks like we got a steal.
If you also accept Kennedy and Broomhead who came just after Grundy as day equally positioned in the draft, Grundy is way ahead of those two

Only just caught up with the news. Whats happening? Are st kilda actively chasing Freeman or just watching the contract negotiations with us?

If I was Freeman, I would of thought about leaving as id have doubts if they could get my body right. I wouldn't wanna drive to seaford every day but
