Nathan Fyfe

My mate's furious with young Nat; went to school with him, was the laziest bugger around yet rakes in all the big bucks! Still, he deserves it, bloody star he is already. Gee the future looks good.

Your mates a liar! Have you guys noticed how often in the last quarter of games when everyone else is buggered Fyfe lifts a gear and racks up the possies at the end of games. He's got great endurance.

I don't think he's lazy, I just think he has that very Mundyesque ability to alter time and speed... you know what I mean.

Definately has shown big improvements in the 4 games so far, and would probably be in my top 5 players so far this season.

Just read this in the membership matters.

The Live Chat room is back and next up in 2011 is Freo young gun Nat Fyfe.

Nat will be waiting to answer your questions on Wednesday 20 April from 1.00pm to 2.00pm WST.

Nat has made a blistering start to 2011, taking his game to a new level in just his second year of AFL Football.

To join in the chat, click here.

My first question will be:

With your slow start to 2011, when will you shift out of first gear and show what you can really do on the field? ;)

i'd ask him if he watched avatar and if he liked it.

Ask him if he watched it??? The whole dam movie is a tribute to his earlier life before he played in the WAFL.

James Camerons' epic movie 'The Avatar' is based on a true story about an ex-crim who through a computer controls the body of a young Nathan Fyfe growing up in the depths of the Lake Grace jungle.
;)

I just love watching this kid play, last year i noticed how good his marking was, for a skinny kid. God he holds his own in 1 on 1 contests. Now he's racking up big numbers, he is already a star and massve steal in the draft.

For years to come drafters will be regreting not picking him up. Imagine if you guys picked up Darling in last years draft aswell. All the discussions about the premiership window being closed after Pavs retirement would be over as Fyfe himself has the abilty to match if not better Pav's career and if you had Darling or get another gun player in there mould. As much as it hurts me to say it, I could honestly see Feo becoming a future powerhouse of the competition.

we don't need darling as we have morabito. shame he's out for the season, but should he come good, he'll be every bit as damaging as darling looks to to be.

To think what Polak with his aerial ability could have been.....

He may not have had the set shot efficiency that we all hoped, but I couldn't argue with that, when he could pluc marks he had no right to take.

I really wonder how he would have performed, considering the team, and especially midfield, that we have now.

In Harvs interview a few days ago he spoke of how important it was to NOT have a central target in the forward line and to instead have a range of options down there.

I agree.

When Pav was down there we looked for him almost every time. He would still kick 65 goals or so for the season, but often we kicked it to him when it was 3 on 1 as the defenders knew it was going there and they got it straight back.

When you have a key forward like that your midfielders become lazy and just kick it to him every time. If you have multiple options they start to look for the "best" option. As a simple analogy - if we kick it long to Pav 200 times and he gets 65 goals, by having a range of options and picking the best one we may be able to get a total of 100 goals from those 200 forward thrusts.

It clearly looks like we have been recruiting a lot of versatile players that can also pinch hit forward. Morabito can do it, as can Fyfe. Pitt is reportedly very good overhead. Mayne is every bit as good as Darling in terms of overhead ability, pressure (currently much better but I'll cut Darling some slack as ye's younger). We also now have Mcphee and Bradley who can really impose themselves down there.

Its been really refreshing to see us try to pick the best targets in the forward line rather than try to kick it long to Pav every time.

Its also why getting a big Key Forward is not that important. As others mentioned, Jack is not really a key forward, he's more in the Mayne role.

You guys are talking as if you're regretting taking Pitt over Darling... both players should be very, very handy players at worst :)

Exactly.

Pitt has been pretty good I reckon considering both are different players. Although Pitt hasnt hit the scoreboard as much as Darling, Pitt's inside 50 count is alot higher on average per game.

I'd still take Pitt if we had our time again. Where does he fit in to our 22? An experienced AFL player in Jack Anthony can't get a gig yet so I can't see how Darling would. Who do you take out? Kepler? Mayne? McPhee?

Think it Harvey who also mentioned some of the bottom 9 sides who had a key full forward - eg. Jack Riewoldt, sometimes struggle to hit the scoreboard because of it. Just as an example, not saying anything would have changed but the richmond v saints game which ended in a draw... Would Richmond have been so competitive if they kicked it on Jacks head all night or was the result the way it was because they were looking for other targets up forward?

I had to laugh when watching the latest Roving Mike segment on the FFC website and Barlow was doing a segment on ANZAC day and what it means to the players. He asked Fyfe who in the team came to mind when he mentioned the word skill and with a straight face Fyfe replies Rhys Palmer :D You could hear the chuckles in the background.

Mind you, Barlow and McPhee were joking that Fyfe is more interested in thinking about the Brownlow than the team at the moment.

Don't worry, I agree with you, the mate's an Eagle fan so he's clearly jealous. Fyfe takes everything in his stride, SO glad he wears our jumper.

Really off topic but -
This is why:

(1) Pavlich will play Mid/HFF for the rest of his career whilst Harvey is the coach
(2) Bradley is a really important part of the side and Anthony will struggle to get a game unless he can put at least 75% of what Mayne does defensively.
(3) Part of the reason why we went Pitt over Darling (IMO Darling will be a much much better player overall though, but can totally understand and agree with the Pitt pick reasoning).
(4) Getting Ruckmen that can kick goals becomes more important to us under this structure...
